Bookie?

A friend of my mom has a boyfriend from somewhere in the U. K., and when she asked him what he does he says he's a bookie. I was just wondering if anybody knows if it means something different in the U. K.? I e-mailed tiggz and asked him but he didn't answer me back. I think he's from over there, anyway let me know....
