I think Frogboy once wrote an article saying that one should keep the "handles" to around 2,000 in the task manager so that your PC runs faster..... how do you reduce the number of handles?

Trash the apps that use too many.

Rather blunt, but that's the only thing a user can do. Handle usage is more something developers should pay attention to.

Thanks for the reply craeonics.
It's just that my PC got real slow a couple of days ago, so, I checked the handles (remembering that article) and I had 12,000+ handles.

Trust me, its nearly impossible to keep handles to 2000. I try to keep mine below 10,000. That tends to keep my computer running at its peak.

The article you're referring to, suggested that you not let any one thing go past 1000 handle. Of course in the case of svchost.exe, there's not much you can do about it. Anything else, including explorer.exe, you can close, or end process, and restart.
I don't recall the article saying anything about the total number of handles for all things running.

Well, I'm not that bad off then.

I couldn't remember exactly what the whole article said but it just popped in my head when I was wondering why it (my PC) was so slow. Yes, the svchost.exe was the one with 1000+. Right now the total is at 10220 and it's zipping around at a good clip..... and since I'm on high-speed internet service I've gotten spoiled.
