Icons in Fences Get Rearranged When Desktop is rebooted or refreshed

Dear support:

I am suddenly getting a strange behavior

  • Icons in my Fences change positions after the machine reboots or a desktop refreshes.
  • Manual rearrangement of icons is necessary to restore the preferred location.
  • Fences version 5.53 | OS Win 10

Fences version 5.53 | Windows 10 Enterprise 22H2

I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this.

Thanks in advance for any guidance,

max

Is this a regular Desktop Fence, or a Folder Portal Fence?

It also looks like three icon disappeared. GitBash, Power BI Desktop, and Docker Desktop.

What is your OS Build? 22H2 - XXXXX.XXXX?

Hi @pelaird, This is a regular desktop fence.

The way I created them a long time ago is to right or left-click anywhere on the desktop and select Create Fence but that option appears to have disappeared - very strange

The missing icons are placed in my "junk" fence. This is my default behavior when software is reinstalled/updated and new icons are created, I then drag to the fence I want the icon in

NOTE: On my machine I went to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features and Fences 5 was updated on 5/23/2024

OS Build - 19045.4412 Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19056.1000.0

Thanks

That is not the expected behavior in 5.53. This is what I see when right-click drag rectangle.

I would suggest trying an uninstall/reinstall of Fences 5.53

Download the latest installer from your account downloads.

Restart your computer; uninstall; restart; install; and restart once again.

Try this and let us know if it corrected your issue.

Hi pelaird, thanks I will do that and keep you posted.

By the way, if I uninstall will I lose my fences configuration? and is there a way to back it up in case it goes sideways?

thanks,

max

Hi @Basj, Thanks I reinstalled as described by @Pelaird. then I restored from layout backup and noticed the same issue.

So, it got me thinking I was able to find a backup of my layout in April applied that and functionality came back. Perhaps the backup may have been corrupted.

Things appear to be working again thanks for the help

@Basj spoke too soon - there is still something strange

I am noticing when I do a desktop refresh  icons in several fences get moved around

here is an example of one fence

If it's just that one Fence, try deleting it and create a new Fence from scratch.

Did you set your Fence to sort other than "none"? Or do you have unintentionally setup Sorting rules?

I can get some "twisted" results on my system.

If I right-click the Desktop>Sort by, and then immediately right-click a Fence>Sort by, I get the same right-click menu as Basj does above.

If I left-click inside the Fence first, and then right-click>Sort by, I get the same right-click menu as you.

Hi @pelaird and @Basj, thanks for the response. What do you think I should do? Is there a previous version perhaps 5.52 that I can try to install? I have been using fences for a long time and this is the first time I have encountered a problem.

thanks in advance for your guidance,

Hello again.

Need to solve why your right click menu don't look like mine. And its also missing "Configure Fences" menu item too. Are you sure you right click the same location as I did. I right click on the empty area of a Fence. Yours look like you right click on an icon.

If I right-click the Desktop>Sort by, and then immediately right-click a Fence>Sort by, I get the same right-click menu as you Basj, except that the Configure Fences is a sub-menu of View.

Very strange indeed.

I reinstalled and my menu looks correct but:

1) on desktop refresh icons are moved around on multiple fences some of them revert back to another fence

2) I can't create a fence on the desktop the option is missing

I can share a video recording if you would like

No one lease has encountered this issue with version 5.53?

You on Windows 11, yes? My Screenshot and the OP is on Windows 10. So there will be difference.

Thank you for the video. That is strange, I can not reproduce the issue on my system. I moved couple of icons around on my system. But, when I click the refresh, the icons is still there where I moved them, not reset back to previous location. Please post screenshot on your Backups->Layout auto-adjustment something like screenshot below.

Hi Basj,

this is what I have - I have 2 external monitors + the laptop screen

Your screenshot look different than mine. Look like Fences V5.53 not upgraded properly. Look at my screenshot there should be 4 radio buttons in the "Layout auto-adjustments" setting. While yours only show us 3 radio buttons.

Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

Basj,

I'm running Fences 5.54 and my settings page for Layout management & backups is the same as MMirabito's.

I am not sure why you have Fences 5.54. The latest available for me is Fences v5.53. As for the screenshots different let me check with Support on that one.
