Icons in Fences Get Rearranged When Desktop is rebooted or refreshed

Icons in Fences Get Rearranged When Desktop is rebooted or refreshed

Dear support:

I am suddenly getting a strange behavior

  • Icons in my Fences change positions after the machine reboots or a desktop refreshes.
  • Manual rearrangement of icons is necessary to restore the preferred location.
  • Fences version 5.53 | OS Win 10

Fences version 5.53 | Windows 10 Enterprise 22H2

I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this.

Thanks in advance for any guidance,

max

I am not sure why you have Fences 5.54. The latest available for me is Fences v5.53. As for the screenshots different let me check with Support on that one.

Thank you,

This version was posted by Neil at some point. I think it might be an internal build. I decided to run it for testing. I'm not having any issues with this build, but then I don't have any issues with any of Stardock's software.

Basj, I reinstalled it last night as described in your provided link. I rebooted twice.

  • As @pelaird mentioned above I am still seeing only 3 options.
I was able to create new fences from Scratch everything was fine but at one point I did notice that when you right-click on the desktop the "configure Fence" option disappeared
  • I then reinstalled Fences without uninstalling and rebooted. When I logged in again the "configure Fence" was visible again
  • I rearranged my icons in t each fence and I randomly refreshed the desktop several times and so far, it's keeping my position
  • I am using 5.53 @pelaird how did you get 5.54?  (Check update is saying I have the latest version)

see screenshots of what I see now

As I said, I believe it was posted at some point by Neil in response to someone with an issue. I think it must be an internal build they were testing for the users specific issue. Version 5.5.3.2 is the latest version available.

I never turn on "Auto updates" nor let the app update itself. I always download the installers from my account download page and use that installer to install the new version. I have seen too many users with problems after an update performed by the app. That way, I also have all the installers available in case I want to go back to a specific version.

As Basj said, I'm running 23H2 - Windows 11 Pro, so there might be subtle differences in the Context menus from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

I am waiting for Support to get back on the different radio button layout. Anyway, let just check something, pelaird, do you see the same issue as MMirabito, on your system? MMirabito video show that when click refresh icons return to its previous location by itself.

Thank you,

Where is the option to turn off auto-update?

Where is the option to turn off auto-update?

It doesn't look like there is an option for Auto "Check for Update" in Fences 5, just a "Check for update" button on the About page of the settings. Some of Stardocks' programs have an Auto "Check for Update" setting.

I usually check my account downloads page once a week to see if there are any updates available.

No, I don't see this issue. If you look at the Fences 5.5 New Layout Engine Thread you will see:

Starting with Fences 5.53, a new option was added:

'Store my layout on a per-monitor-configuration-basis'

For more on why we added it, and what it helps solve, please see:

https://forums.stardock.com/528046/get;3931457

This new option will be enabled by default for new installs ONLY.  Anyone installing 5.53 (or later) over a prior version of Fences would need to enable it manually.  The decision to not enable it for existing installations was not to disrupt anything a client has set.

Max,

You basically said that you have resolved your previous issue here. Do you have any other issue now?

I don't mentioned what you quoted/mentioned above in this thread due to Max's issue has nothing to do with thing changing relate to monitor resolution/graphics card driver update/monitor plug/unplug/docking issue etc.

I only posted this to show you that 5.53 only has three options on the Layout auto adjustments section of the settings page.

Hi MMirabito,

We appreciate your feedback on this, and would like to ask if you can divert your attention to our Fences 5.5 New Layout Engine Thread (linked at the bottom of my reply here).

    • I am using 5.53 @pelaird how did you get 5.54?  (Check update is saying I have the latest version)

To answer that question first, Pelaird almost certainly reviewed this post and installed 5.54 from there, which was created to account for clients with 6+ monitors.

As for your issue with Fence/Icon misplacement, we'd highly appreciate your attention on the following thread:

https://forums.stardock.com/528229/fences-55-new-layout-engine-thread

Specifically, you'll want to look at the Troubleshooting section, and follow those guidelines to post your issue over there.  The reason we're asking this of you is to identify and properly troubleshoot any issues related to the "store my layout on a per-monitor-configuration basis" setting.  We'll be more than happy to work any issues presented there to know what problems might exist.

Thanks again,

Adam, for now, my issue appears to have been fixed by uninstalling, reinstalling, rebooting, and recreating the fences from scratch.

does this help?

Thanks

Thanks Max, that helps.

And I'm glad to hear it's working with your fresh install and that you're able to use it.  Just wanted to make it clear so we all know where to go if any issue related to that feature comes up.
