What Do I Do With This Subspace Drive?

The nice woman at the starbase told me I should try to get her some subspace drives, so she can reverse-engineer them and/or colonize some planets.

I've found a subspace drive and brought it back to Earth.  What happens now?

I see that I can sell it for 12500 RU. If I do this, will she start reverse-engineering it or colonizing planets?  Or is there some other way to start that process?

The Subspace Drive is an engine. You need hyperdrive engines, Tywom Cuddle Drive and Not so Cuddle Drive do not count, 100 units of Francium and locate a potential colony site.

After you bring these to the commander you will be able to purchase human ships and after some time a colony will appear.

This can be completed up to 3 times.

Does doing it 3 times produce 3 colonies?  What is the point of doing it more than once?
