Actually I will have to update that theme here in WC too, since I modified it further here so the CPU desktop module shows the two processes using the most CPU and the RAM desktop module shows the two processes using the most RAM. Always useful to know.
Well, hurry up. I'm waiting.

Quoting WebGizmos,

When I reinstalled Winstep and it applied an initial theme...changing the background in the process...it displayed my previous background in the "restore wallpaper" thingy on the shelf...and when I clicked it it did nothing...go figure.

Have you put a check mark in "Prevent themes from changing your current wallpaper? In general settings tab. I have it set and the restore wallpaper button works for me.

I didn't mess with any settings....as soon as it installed it applied a theme...changing the wallpaper in the process...and showing the "restore wallpaper" in the shelf...so I clicked and nothing happened...it's a conspiracy I tell ya! ;P

After the install the theme wallpaper changed with my previous wallpaper on the right side of the dock. I clicked on it and my previous wallpaper was restored. No problem.

I have a very blunt and very sensitive question:

As old timers will surely remember, the typical price of applications like ObjectDock, WindowBlinds, Fences, etc, was around the $20-$25 USD mark for many years. Winstep applications were - and are - no exception.

Something to take into account is that these are prices that remained unchanged for nearly 20 years, while the cost of living never stopped increasing. I think this is something unique to the Windows utility software business.

To give you an idea, an application that cost $19.95 back in 1999 should now cost over $28.89 to make up for inflation alone. The $39.90 price of Winstep Xtreme in 2001 is equivalent to $56.90 in today's money - yet Winstep Xtreme still sells today for the same price it sold for over 16 years ago (!).

The above introduction was to try and get you to see things from a developer's perspective. Now for the sensitive part (sensitive because I have to talk about Stardock's current pricing for these type of utilities in a Stardock owned forum - threading thin ice here despite Winstep's good relation with Stardock, so I will try getting to the point as fast as possible):

A few years ago, when Stardock shifted its attention from Windows customization to the gaming market, it slashed the prices of all their Windows customization applications by 50% or more: applications that used to cost $19.95 (such as Fences, WindowBlinds and ObjectDock) are now being sold for only $9.99, with ObjectDock being sold for the extremely low price of $4.99 (presumably because it is no longer in active development).

Basically it shifted the prices of full blown PC applications to those of - normally rather simplistic - cell phone apps you can buy in the Google or Apple online stores.

While I can understand why Stardock did this from a business perspective, from my personal (and Winstep's) perspective what this also did was lower the perceived value of Windows customization applications as a whole, e.g.; judging solely by today's prices, Winstep Nexus Ultimate is five times more expensive than ObjectDock, thus terribly expensive by comparison.

But this is only from the skewed perspective that $4.99 is a fair price for an application like ObjectDock (it's not!), because if you take inflation into account the price of Nexus Ultimate should now be in the region of $38, not the $24.95 it actually costs.

Throughout all this price slashing, Winstep prices were kept the same, i.e.; at their minimum fair levels for what the Winstep applications actually do and the amount of time and work put into them. It could not be otherwise, given that Winstep is a small company that does not have a gaming side to fund its Windows customization side. From this perspective, not getting into a price war it simply could not win was a good decision. Or, at least, the only viable decision - and it worked for Winstep.

Of course, this does not prevent me from worrying: worrying that due to Stardock's current pricing and despite the reasoning above, Winstep applications might be being perceived by many here as too expensive.

To make matters worse, some governments started taxing online goods a couple of years ago with as much as 23% VAT.

This all adds up.

Some people think that the less something costs, the more it will sell, making up for the lower price with higher quantities sold. This is only true up to a point as the law of diminishing returns soon kicks in, and if you go overboard it can actually have a negative impact - everyone has an idea of how much something is worth in their heads (which is more or less the price they would be willing to pay for it) and if something is priced way too low in relation to that perceived value, then the reasoning immediately shifts to 'something is probably wrong with it/you get what you pay for'. This is one of the reasons people usually prefer buying more expensive brands than their cheaper but generic equivalents - whenever possible, they prefer quality over price.

On the other hand it is also true they prefer established brands over lesser known brands, the same way it's also very possible for a company to price itself out of business, as costs remain the same or increase and lowering prices is easy, but raising them back up not so much.

Now, I know for a fact that people who buy Winstep applications have zero complaints about the price once they realize - by actually using the applications - their full potential and how much value is really packed into them. They can perceive for themselves the huge amount of work and attention to detail that was put into those applications.

So, my question is: given all of the above, do you feel that Winstep applications are expensive?

Absolutely NOT! Considering everything Winstep does it's a very reasonable price and great bang for the buck. In my 10 years being online...and purchasing various applications for my PC...I can think of only a few purchases I can honestly say I will never regret buying and still use today and can't see my screen not having them there. ObjectDock & Winstep are the best things I ever laid money down for...and there are far and few things I can say that about. There are things with Winstep I haven't even had a chance to play with because it does so much...you could even say it's overwhelmingly full to the brim with toys aka features. There are even times when I feel like I stole it from you....lol

So no...nowhere near expensive.

And had there been a builder! Cough! Cough! I would have still been putting themes together. :-"

And I can assume the check is in the mail? :P

I'm pretty frugal (some would call it something else ;) ).  What can I say, some things are worth paying for.

I mostly only use the Workshelf and modules and I do not think Winstep to be overpriced at all. Especially when you consider the lower price of renewals. And once you've tried Winstep Xtreme, why would you not renew?

Thanks for the feedback guys. :)

I would also like to hear the opinion of someone who hasn't actually installed a Winstep application yet, if someone is willing to.

Well, given the lack of replies, I assume the answer is also negative. :)

Well, I've installed it (trial/free version) so does that count? LOL

Anyways, never having used it up to now, I find it very easy to use, so, I'd say it's user friendly, there's definitely lots of options, and that's good, so I can't wait to start trying out skinning some, and for the theme builder too. So far, I give it a thumbs up Jorge.

I had Winstep in two flavors. I started out with the Nexus dock and graduated to Xtreme some time ago. Unfortunately I let the sub expire and after a couple of years decided to buy it brand new. I paid 29.95 USD and when I installed it I was hooked. Too expensive? Nah...when you consider all it can do and I haven't even played with it yet. I need to build up some skins for it first. As for the builder.....:banhammer:  do I need to use it? Lol

Thanks, Don! Hope you didn't mind me joking about your name on the other thread (the first mistake was accidental, no idea where my mind was at the time, but the second was very much deliberate  )

Thanks, but you never need to buy it brand new after having it done once, Ross. Once a Winstep customer, always a Winstep customer - you can always renew at the reduced price even if it has been years since your last renewal. Just send an email to Winstep support for the renewal link. :)

I feel dumb asking this but how does one go about just launching the dock when you have Winstep Extreme? There are times when I do not want Nextstart or the WorkShelf active, sometimes I only want to use the dock.

Well, you could load Winstep, then disable the workshelf in settings, under the docks and shelves tab. Use the tray icon to turn off NextStart, you'll get a dialog box where you can disable NextStart running at startup.

There may be an easier way, but I don't know it.

Everything in Winstep Xtreme is modular, so it can be enabled/disabled at will.

For instance, when you say you don't want NextSTART, if what you actually mean is the NextSTART taskbar (so you can still access the 100% customizable NextSTART menu by bumping the top left screen corner), all you need to do is open NextSTART Preferences, go to the Taskbar tab and clear the 'Allow NextSTART to replace the Windows taskbar' setting, then press OK.

If you REALLY do not want to have NextSTART running, all you need to do is exit the application. If you do not want it to run EVER, then open NextSTART Preferences, go to the General tab and disable 'Run NextSTART at Windows Startup'.

As for the Shelf in WorkShelf, open WorkShelf Preferences and go to the Docks & Shelves tab. From there you can enable/disable all the currently active Shelves, Docks and Drawers. You can also do the same via each dock/shelf/drawer 'Dock and Shelf Management' right click context sub-menu.

Same thing for the desktop modules, you can right click any of the desktop modules for options to open/close other modules, or you can do that from the Modules tab in WorkShelf Preferences.

Got it, just bought Nexus Ultimate today, and so far, I'm loving it!|-)

I disable NextStart easily. Right click on the taskbar and click on exit NextStart. Done. No need to open preferences.

Can't figure out why I can't access any Modules/Widgets in Nexus Ultimate, or do I need Winstep Xtreme?

Shouldn't matter. On the Nexus dock there is an icon that can hide or show all the widgets. Its the white one with the gray center. Hope that helps.

Ross, that only exists in Winstep Xtreme. You won't see it if you only have Nexus.

Yes but it should also be in Ultimate which Don says he has.

No. I just worked this issue out with Don, but for future reference only Winstep Xtreme features the free form desktop version of the modules. Nexus and Nexus Ultimate only support modules as icons on docks, etc...

Easiest way to know what does what before you buy is by referencing THIS PRODUCT COMPARISON PAGE.
