Comparison of Star Controls

How many more planets and systems does this new Star Control have compared with Star Control 2?

I'm finding a lot of lists of SC2 star systems, but none of them have a total, a count. Frustrating.

...but it's definitely less than 3,000, which--if I remember correctly--is roughly the number we're promised by Stardock.

So...

Okay, I went to one of those sites and counted; you're welcome.

I got to five hundred ninety-six, but I probably missed out one or two...call it 600.

...for whatever that's worth.

That is a good question.  Can someone find out the sc2number? I’ll check the sco number she. I get in.

Ah! Like counting jellybeans in a jar!

Based on the last UQM export Serosis gave me, the magic number for planets is 3802 and 502 solar systems.

502? No. Way closer to 600; I counted.

Thank you for responding...this game I definitely will pick up.  So about 600 solar systems is what is in Star Control 2.  Is that the same number in Star Control Origins?

I swear they said the SCO number was in the thousands. Maybe I'm wrong--I only heard that in a video, and I don't wanna go digging, but I could swear that's what they said.

This thread got me curious, and since I'm in before Brad...  :)

There are 2735 'Planetoids' in the Star Control: Origins galaxy file, so factor in the 200-ish Gas Giants (that can't be landed on) and you're sitting at just over 2500 plants to visit in SC:O

So far anyway. I add about 20 to 30 a day as the story requires.

Are you saying the story isn't finished yet?

I work for a software company that does large scale sql implementations...

I'm guessing much like a large DB build out, Stardock build the game engine and everything and then stress tested it with thousands of "random" but non-unique planets....

once the stress test was done and they knew the engine could work they set apart building the unique planets as the game story requires....

so my best guess is the story is done, the game could probably ship right now...   but they are adding the unique little things and fine tuning stuff to make sure it is really really good.

Well, there isn't much else I feel I'd want now, given what I've seen so far.

There is one thing and I posted about it, but I don't even know whether they've read it; there were no replies, not even telling me to get stuffed, so...

Basically, I was asking for improvement in ship selection, making the icons more of a front view than top--some ships I've built are really hard to identify from above; even just a slight angle would be helpful--and to give us a list of a ship's weapons when choosing our next ship in Fleet Battles in case we don't remember it's armament when choosing.

   Yes to isometric ship views....

Yeah...that's really my only wishlist-item right now.

Everything else is curiosity, really.

Like...will there be an alien-crafter to go along with planets and ships? I mean for the story-building mode...or will we have to use the shipped SCO species? I'd love a Spore-style alien builder...I'm just curious how that'll work.

On the subject of the ship thumbnails...  I mentioned this once a long time ago, the ship cost should be on the thumbnail on the fleet selection screen.  Players are asked to form a fleet from ships, but are not shown how much each ship costs.  If the player is being asked to "build a 50-point fleet from these 15 ships" they really need to see right in front of them what each ship costs as they are deciding which ships they want in the fleet.  Having to add and then remove a ship to see how many points it costs just feels like somebody forgot something.

swear that's there; if I was at home and not in a motel on my Chromebook, I'd check...but it's not on the thumbnail; if I remember right, it's on the ship description. When you mouse over it to see the weapons and stats, the price is in there, too.

Well, to answer the actual OP:

UQM had about 3,800 astral bodies in total, including moons and gas giants. So SCO is less at this point, but if 20-30 are being added daily on average as claimed, then it could easily be over 4,000 by the time of release.

Don't forget this is just the first chapter ... there will be even more areas of the universe to explore in future expansions.

Okay, my count of roughly 600 (I may've miscounted; it was a long list) was of stars rather than astral bodies...I'd gotten the impression that SCO had 3,000+ star systems, but maybe I'm wrong.

I hope I'm not. Cuz that would be amazing.

Yea I would guess around 3,000 total planets by the end of dev.  Assume 5 planets per system on average and that would be around 600 stars.
