Feedback From Beta

Hello,

I've played all of the Star Control games over the years and here is my feedback on the Fleet & Ship Design Beta.

Fleet Combat

1.  So, when I was in my 20's the fleet battles were no big deal; now that I'm <cough> a little older it would be nice if you could slow down the pace of the battles.

2.  The zoom on the ships is a little off, maybe an option to 'not' auto-zoom?

3.  I read on the forums that the idea of implementing an AI (again like from SC2) in the finished game is on the table; I support this idea.   I'm much more interested in the game/exploration/interaction than combat.

Ship Builder

1.  More parts of course!

2.  It would be nice if you would categorize the parts. i.e. hulls, engines, etc.

3.  Maybe sub-categorize the categorizes with a particular race?

4.  Finally, a 'reset' button would be fantastic on the pieces you modify by X, Y, and Z.  For example, if you tweak a piece and it's been modified, give it an reset option that puts all the values back to 0.

Keep up the great work!

When you say the zoom is a little off, what do you mean by that?

The camera should be centred on the ships always and including both your ship and the opponent ship.  This does not include secondary helper ships they may have created.

Sorry Neil, I should have been more clear.   Basically, when the two ships are far apart the view is normal, when they come close together the view auto-zooms to the close up.  This can be a little bit disorienting if they (the ships) come together and then back apart several times quickly.  i.e. zoom in, out, in, out, in etc.

I should have been more specific, I guess what I would ask for is possibly an option where the view is 'static' or possibly a setting to keep the ships from zooming in and out when close; something like that.

Keep up the great work!

I personally don't quite get what the problem is ? That's exactly how it's been in Star control 2, it automatically zooms in and out depending on how close you are to the other ship, that's been normal, felt normal and worked well. It gave a sense of immersiveness, anxiousness in a positive way that lets you feel you are now close to the enemy and must now either fight it out or take evasive action, really added life to the combat part of the game and it should definately stay !

Granted...... i haven't played the Beta yet, i'm still doing my observations, i will see how it plays out in the next 2 weeks.

However, if what you mean (zoom is off) is that it does not feel like star control 2 that perhaps the timing of the zoom is off, or the scale of the zoom feels more unnatural, disorients you to the point where it disrupts engaging gameflow, then you might have a point, however in star control 2 it was always there, felt natural and worked perfectly well. And IF it is still like it was in SC2, then i'd like it not to be changed.

I  think he means it zooms in too closely at the closest level of zoom, which I agree with.  I think the closest level of zoom should be pulled back a little bit to give you greater situational awareness of your surroundings.  Right now it almost feels like looking at the action through a straw when it zooms in that close.  You are probably about at the same level of closest zoom as SC was, but I always thought SC also zoomed in too close at its closest level.

Also when one ship explodes, the camera sometimes zooms to the "winning" ship immediately and does not show the explosion. The camera should finish showing the explosion before zooming to the winner and playing the winning jingle.
