A Question About Visual Measurements

I notice a grid underlaying the combat area.  Is that intended to be a final release feature? Even in the short clips I've seen so far, it's quite distracting.  The originals didn't need a grid, and I don't think this one will either.

In the same vein, any chance you'll do something more subtle on planet orbits than a complete solid circle?  Perhaps do a feint comet-trail that extends back from planets and moons across 45 or 60 degrees of their orbit...that would give the impression of the orbit without cluttering up the beautiful black emptiness of space with artificial measurement props.

Welcome to no grid fan club.

Have to agree on the grid. If the desire is to show gravity effects, then visualise it as a gravity well around the object instead. I imagine it looking a little like a spider web, something you should fear getting pulled into.

Disagree on the orbits. Its an easy way to show eccentric orbits of planets which definitely adds to the realism of a solar system.

In SC2 it always bugged me that I'd waltz into a system and be greeted by a concentric ring parade.  It took away from the feeling that I was in SPACE.  Are orbits really that important anyway?

I like the orbital lines. Especially in the title screen. As for the SM grid, I also want it removed.

A minimal gravity grid would just need to show the curvature of the grid near the gravity source.  It could just "fade into the distance" in both directions, and all you would see is just barely enough for your mind to comprehend the size and depth and strength of the gravity in the only place it actually effects you in any significant way, right next to the planet.

This works to convey the information, but 2-4 square wide doughnut-shaped grid "half-pipes" around each planet might look a little strange.

I love inconspicuous orbit curves. It adds sense of grandeur.

Just playing through the current beta, thanks to the devs for removing the grid and showing the effect only around gravity wells. It looks really good!
