Doesn't mean it will be good.

Just saying.

They had to compromise and have one single zoom level. No long range battles. It's interesting though. Thanks OP.

I'm going to be honest, that looks kind of meh to me.

It's been done well before, Subspace.  It works if the combat environment supports it.  In Subspace they made it work with a single fix to the only big problem they had in making it work.  Every ship had a single "Repel" ability to fling everything away from them, so if six players converged you could just Repel them all away and save yourself.  That's more of a "band aid and string" fix to that problem, there are other ways around that as well.  Winding up with 5 or six people converging on you at once is the only real stumbling block to make it work with 60 players, or whatever, in a single zone.  It really isn't a big issue at all.

...still longing for Space Hockey:-)

It seems to me you have not heard of the Continuum project: http://subspace-continuum.com/

You are welcome.

(I played a couple seasons in League both in Continuum and in Cosmic Rift. I played the original Subspace too, but back then I was pretty casual.)
