April Update - You can't trust him (animation)

Hold up, Stardock. We're losing it a bit here with the "You can trust him" animation movie. You guys have to understand...

When, in the past, you have said you're going for a cartoony look for the aliens, I think I've finally distinguished what I don't agree with about that statement.

Star Control II WAS NOT CARTOONISH. It was, instead, WHIMSICAL in design. The newest animation just leans too far in the other direction - it looks like a cartoon. A caricature of an alien, a bopping, silly, Pixar cartoon for children.

While the original Star Control was silly and fun - it was by no means, a cartoon. This distinction must be made going forward.

The Tywom, imo, had the same flaw. It looked like the sidekick on a baby's show on Sprout. You know the one! The goofy puppet that laughs hysterically when the main human character says something kids think is funny!

The Mukay was different - serious, real looking, like it COULD exist outside of Nickelodeon. It rocks. Same goes for the alien with the sentient Palm Pilot. This You Can Trust Him guy, however, looks like he should be on Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.

You have to make the distinction. There was nothing cartoony about SCII. It was whimsical! It was irreverent! It was hilarious! But it was invariably serious. Very serious. And that needs to come through.

Sure the Pkunk design was painted. And it was a weird character and very animated - but mass suicide/genocide at the hands of your long lost evolutionary species brothers-turned-warlords (Yehat) is not for kids.

It's not. Besides, we didn't even see the environment he's in. You guys gotta relax until we do.

@Hunam_ - IT IS DIFFERENT. I'm putting a stop to this once and for all. We all know what the CANYOUTRUSTHIM alien looks like by now.

I've taken the liberty of re-drawing him in 5 minutes, with a pencil and a post-it-note I found nearby my desk. I think this gets the point I'm trying to make across - there's CARTOON, and then there's this:

CanYouTrustHim

This is STILL CARTOON-Y, it doesn't look like a realistic creature - but it is realistic cartoony, more along the lines of Star Control II. Still happy and sinister. Whimsical. Still a big smile. Not realistic by any means. But also not from a Disney movie.

Mine is NOT better, I'm not a professional artist, but what I'm TRYING to say is there's more than one "cartoony" way to draw something. Make sense?

If you still need more illustration, I'll redraw either the Zoq, the Fot or the Pik in a CARTOON-cartoon way.

But do you see what I mean? I'm not saying replace YouCanTrustHim with mine - I'm just saying - there are different forms of cartoons. Archer vs. The Simpson. Ren and Stimpy vs Dora the Explorer. And I'd like to see a LOT more detail in the YouCanTrustHim art.

Yep, YCTH is a little too "plastic"/"toy-like" rather than alive. But again, this is just a test vid as I understand and we're looking at it without any context which actually shapes our perception of any alien.

I feel bad for the art department. You guys are raking them through the coals something fierce. Is this little guy truly that bad?

We're not raking anyone over the coals. It's called criticism, and it's the reason for the founder's program's existence.

This is a problem for me and many other people - including my daughter who randomly just said, after seeing the original YCTH alien, "Ooh! Baby shows!" and my son said, "Noo... That looks too cartoony."

I don't know how to break it to you all.... the feedback regarding the guy means we hit him right smack perfect for what we want him for. :)

I think the "gremlin" looking version might be a good look, if he is supposed to be an obvious bad guy.  Their alien looks "shifty".  Like he is going to act like a good guy, but turn out to be a bad guy in some "Romulan-like" deceptive way.  At least that is the impression I get from him.

Ooooh, so you're going to have aliens that are going to be playing an earthling vintage computer game where the goal of the game is to vaporize YCTH aliens?
