Expansions and DLC

What are your thoughts on paid expansions and DLC for Star Control?  I'm not a big fan, but I am a realist, and I understand if Stardock have already assumed that any IP such as this one will serve as a platform for such paid add-on content.  So.. what do you fine people consider as valid fare for DLC material?  Is there anything we want to make heard that we don't want to see?

Sure, I don't mind. I already paid a large investment on the premise that they would have DLC and add ons. I like DLC my issue is that some of it is very overpriced for the content.

I want to see DLC have a great story. What I really want is for you to uncover some artifact in the main game. Total mystery. No clue what it does. Never figure it out during the entire game. Can't uncode it or translate it, or whatever. And I want it to be in the ruins of some civilization who are gone without a trace. And the artifact, in the DLC, opens up or gets unlocked and sends you on a chase to find out what the hell happened, and how to avoid the same fate. DLC with a story and a purpose.

WHAT I DO NOT WANT, and it may be painful to hear is: on this exact Web page that I am currently on, typing this, is a banner ad:

"Fallen Enchantress Battlegrounds DLC - Conquer 15 new tactical maps!"

Spare us this please. This is bull. Include this in the main game. I would never spend more of my hard-earned money on 15 new tactical maps. It's the wrong thing. Make it worth my while with a good story and a new race and more to uncover about the world we love, or don't make it at all.

Haha.  I acually put something like this into a mod I did of an obscure BBS "door game" called Usurper.  The two most expensive things were a "Thingamagig" and a "Whatchamacallit".  Neither of them actually did anything at all:-)

Speak for yourself. This is good content for those of us who want to play multiplayer. I'm fine with DLC single player expansions, but I also want new ships for SuperMelee.

(But we do get all expansions for free anyway.)

Don't think that should stop us talking about it in hopes no one will ever get a bad taste in their mouthes like a lot of DLC these days does.

A lot of companies these days seem to finish a game and then cut some out to sell as DLC, which is one of the worst things that any company can do in my opinion.

cuorebrave's idea of having something in the game that doesn't lead anywhere untill DLC is fine, but if they finish that entire story line and just timegate it untill you have paid for the DLC i'm not OK with it.

Me i would like to see expansions for both single and multiplayer in the same DLC.

Using Cuorebrave's example, you find something in the game which will set you on a singleplayer quest that makes you meet, for example, 6 new races.

All the ships of these races also get added to Super Melee, 2 or 3 for free, the rest are unlocked when you buy the DLC.

This way people who don't buy the DLC still get an update to Super Melee and incentive to keep playing, and they meet other people who use the ships that get unlocked when you did buy the DLC. These should of course be balanced so it won't be pay to win, but people will still want to fly them and wonder how these ships and the alien races inside of them feature in the universe, so they will be tempted to buy the DLC as well.

That's my two cents anyway =)

Sure, sure. But is there evidence that shows that Stardock is doing it? They seem to focus on the core game first and then release paid DLC.

And let's hope it stays that way, shall we? :)

Things change, though, someone gets the bright idea that making double the money on content you already created anyway is an easy way to make some profit and before you know it someone OKs that idea, and then some smart person who bought the game looks into the game files and spots all the assets and quest lines etc. are already there and then the midden hits the windmill.....

My point was, just maybe someone at SD had that idea already, probably not but a very small maybe. If we just decide we don't need to talk about our opinions on DLC simply because we'll be getting it anyway since we paid for the founders package, i think we're doing it wrong?

For you guys, the DLC won't matter since you guys just get them.

But DLC for this game is an absolute necessity.  New mini-adventures are something I thikn most of us wish had come with Star Control 2 (for instance).

New ship parts. new weapons, etc.  Those all make great DLC imo.

What I want to see in NEW DLCs are things that reflect on actual REAL life.

For example:

Science is able to prove some physical laws.

Or new theories emerge regarding some property of the Universe.

Or new things are discovered in the Universe (for example this star is actually a binary star).

Or there is actually a hidden 9th planet only just discovered...

It would be cool to see these things be integrated as part of DLCs.
