I think one thought left out is the MUSIC.  I was a fan of the quirky alien races background music, as well as the quasi-space theme.

I listened to Hot Chip "Night and Day" and somehow thought of the Orz.  Not that anyone has big pockets to afford them (Hot Chip) - but thinking electronic fun music like this is the way to go - or the way to continue.

Quasispace (green) theme kinda sucked in comparison to hyperspace (red) in SC2 which was pretty epic IMO.  ^_^

It should be noted that Toys for Bob did not have a music department when making Star Control 2. The music was done by volunteers from the module tracker community. So there wasn't an actual unified theme for all the songs.

that's cool to know!  I played melee so much on the 3DO, SCII was practically the reason I bought the system.
