A More Mature GalCiv3?

I've never been too bothered about the cartoon aspect of Galciv2. The funny looking news robot or the evil squirrels, the lighthearted humor in Galciv 2 wasn't really all that funny to be fair; nor did the game at any point try to take itself serious.

However a mate of mine earlier today brought up the subject of Galciv3 with the hope that it would be more mature, that it would at least try this time to take itself seriously. And from something that I was never really bothered about before, I have to say I agree.

Galciv 2 had its charms and Galciv 3 doesn't need to lose that charm. However I am hoping that Galciv 3 will have grown up a little and dump the non-funny dialogue, evil squirrels and good natured teddy bears and exchange that with something that feels more immersive for a space 4x game. I'm not asking for a dark filled warhammer 40k universe, but a more grown up aspect of what we got in Galciv 2 with less attempts at lighthearted fuzzy wuzzy humor...

Anyone else agree?

I disagree. Humour is immersive as fuck. A good joke on the part of a Dregin or Yor will serve to contrast the many differences, obvious and less obvious, between two civilizations. The Yor comment about how we communicate by moving wet meat around in a cavity is my favorite example, it serve to underline how alienated a cybernetic artificial race should truly feel in a universe dominated by biological life forms.

I'm not sure how you could achieve the same by being all serious and everything.

I like the humor is GalCiv, and Galciv2.  I'm actually a tad hurt that its described (by some on these forums) as not 'mature.' Definitely not a Those 'light hearted teddys' might have a whole different meaning to a yor?  Keep the humor.  Indeed, expand it a bit, add some dry humor.

I have to disagree as well. The humour was funny, and really helped my immersion. Most importantly though, Frogboy had this to say about it in a similar thread:

GalCiv II had some great humor but the game was very inconsistent in it.

I don't mind a game being serious OR a game being humorous as long as it commits to it and is consistent. The problem with GalCiv II's humor, IMO, is that it was inconsistent which served to break the atmosphere of the game.

GalCiv III will be more consistently humorous but it's not a comedy of course. It just has its share of levity.

From a writing perspective, my #1 pet peeve of the Elemental games is that they take themselves too seriously. In Legendary Heroes, I created a quest character (Mimby) and wrote those quests to try to inject some humor into the game.

I imagine mod support might let you rewrite lines of the game you don't enjoy and change "cartoony" aspects. I'm ambivalent towards it. Endless Space is a good example of a very serious 4X space game, but it ends up being very hard to understand because it spends time trying to make techs sound fancy.

We have a way too much "serious" games which aren't serious, nor funny. So I'm with Eric Frank Russell's Minor ingredient - we need humour, because there is deficit of it. And I actually find GC to be mature, because their mix of seriousness and humour is well adjusted.

There's a race that serves up another race as a delicacy. It's probably better to bring some levity, otherwise stuff like that is going to get rather depressing.

We have had a few more threads about the Humour of GalCiv and it seems that the general consensus is that most GalCiv players like this aspect. I certainly do. Furthermore it has become somewhat of a staple of the series at this point.

I think the humour fits GalCiv 2 and has its place in the game.  I think Brad is on the point about embracing the humor aspect  and implementing it in a more thought out and uniform way. I am looking forward to it.

In galciv 2 you had the Campaign which had a serious tone but when you got down to playing the game and civ interactions it was more light hearted. I liked that duality between the two, I am looking for the same in GalCiv3

Maybe someone can pull out a ''Serious Gal Civ mod'' for those who do not like it.

P.S: I am currently playing Ur-Quan Masters and im really cracking up. I hope to see the same type of humor in GalCiv but maybe not on such a over the top level. The dialogue with the aliens in this game are full of awesome.

The original Star Trek Series was very cheesy and I think it is part of why it worked so well.

Having been absent from this community (GalCiv palyers) for many years it was a pleasant surprise to find that there is a GC3 coming in the future and, more importantly, still I lively and diverse community of faithful fans here.

I will be sure to return again, hopefully sooner than in a few years this time, and check the new game out!

and such comments could be in poor taste, as well.

One of us. One of us. One of us.

On topic, the Gal Civ franchise humour is fantastic, I'd very happily see it expanded upon, not reduced!

I love the humor that was in GC2 and want more. Most any good game has side kicking humor, hell I am going to be 59 on the 12 of this month, who wants games that are mature? ^_^ XD I agree with the majority of you who seem to want humor as well. ;)

I agree about the squirrels, but I like the humour in tech descriptions and diplomatic dialogue to be kept.

Yet another vote for humor.  I am sick and tired of darker=better in common social perception.  Movies get darker, TV gets darker.  Remakes of old fiction get darker and darker.  If there aren't dystopian societies with either apocalypses or serial killers or both it is no longer "mature" or "immersive" or "realistic".

Somewhere in all that, the idea of a game just being plain good fun seems to have faded away.  I am hoping we can keep GalCiv as the exception to this dread-filled, dreary, bleak-is-the-new-black, trend in entertainment.  I understand people who like serious fiction, but please, let us keep this island of good humor and self-deprecating genre awareness amidst the darkness that spreads across our culture.  Pretty please?

I also like the humor in the GC series. But I think it is important to also point out that humor is in the eye of the beholder. I don't think we can ALL be in agreement about whether GC2 was humorous or not.

True, but I consider funny and humorous two different things. You might find a comedy utterly not funny but it is still a comedy.

Even if you find the galciv 2 humor very silly and stupid and ineffective, it was still meant as humor. Btw humor does not need to be side cracking to be effective. Just putting a smile on your face once in a while works and can set the mood.

the humor in gc2 was awesome; and i want more of it.

Actually now that im thinking about it there should be a minor race that tries to throw a major pun in every time you talk to them. to the point that you're sitting in your chair groaning just because you need to talk to them and are dreading to see what the pun is this time.

Or Vogons, who insist on reading poetry so bad you want to uninstall the game every time you talk to them?

They should be called 'The Punklemans', but whatever you call them that would be my favourite race in the game!! I'd talk to them every chance I got hahahaha

I wonder how the copyright of this would work, if they could actually license the idea from hitch hikers guide? Because yes, yes yes yes! With the Snathi, the Dark Yor and these two minor civ's in a game.... :D

Fate,

We've opened the door to DLC consisting entirely of dialog updates, haven't we? D'OH!

GNN Weekly News: "Today Stardock announced the first DLC for it's critically acclaimed success GC3. Entitled 'The Cringe Pack' the DLC contains a host of new minor races to populate the galaxy and stems from a surge of support for GC3 to have more of its trademark cheesy humour and fun. Reportedly included is a race who's diplomatic posturing consists entirely of slipping sly puns into every conversation. To quote one commentator - it's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off!"

For the record, it would!

I agree with the OP 100%.  Unfortunately, the devs - and what looks like the majority of the player base - don't.
