Black Sun: Retribution

Black Sun: Retribution

Black Sun: Retribution, referred to as Project Retribution, is a recreation of Black Sun: Salvation.

Black Sun has been rebuilt as a Radioplay, and is available http://www.campaigncreations.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6956. This link also contains information about the project, including why it was turned into a radioplay.

Do not bother asking any further questions regarding the project here, as I do not visit this forum. I may be contacted on CC for any inquiries.

For most and sincerely. My science fiction book im writing is called Blacksun O.o but has nothing to do with anything like this. Its great to see this project at full stand. but i would very much like to ask if you could lose the name Blacksun.

Little Information:

1. Ive been working on this Title for 19 years.

2. Blacksun is my baby and would not like to have it taken it away from me.

3. https://www.facebook.com/kenneth.meagher1/notes for proof.

4. That one pic on page 1. is a ripped off version of a Klingon Negh.var :)

Toodles!

Black Sun is a part of TOA which is my life's work also around 20 years in the making. Not losing the name, sorry. I'm not taking anything away from you because I have no intentions of publishing anything. Good luck with your writing.

Yes, I have used some designs from some other stuff, for example the Great Knight is based on the gundam's Albion and you might spot a few others. This is because I can't model things that are in my head.

/edit

Also, I'd like to point out that "Black Sun" is not a terribly unique name, and one used many times in literature already.

Neither of us have any claim over a name so generic.

well i guess because our Universes are Entirely Different. But both are set in space...... Now that you mention Gundam i like you lol.

and for not being able to model things in your head. Theres a guide on how to create a starship by GURPS. Thats if you wanna go with being realistic like me. i have couple of ship designs already designed that i drew. if you wanna stay in contact with me or what not that be cool. we can collaborate together. Should honestly do a project for Homeworld 2. Since Gearbox is coming out with an HD version with a mod loader on it. Thats where you should put it :) just saying.

Im writing alot of things. 3 universes to write is hard. but it keeps me occupied :) atleast when im bored lol

This project actually originated in Homeworld 2 back in the day. I'm not really interested in making a mod... sins was just a platform for recording - I intended to make a movie. Ideally, if I was to change engines, I'd focus entirely on the UDK and just build everything in that, and not just the scenes. The problem there is that I am not skilled enough to know how to handle the hundreds of thousands of turrets animation-wise. As you can see in that test 19 video, some ships in the sins variant - which is very limited by polygon and weapon restrictions - still have insane amounts of weapons. An actual canon representation in a game is entirely impossible.

I know how to "model" I guess (check my last post on page 4), the problem is more or less in how bringing my designs into actual tangible form. I have had this problem since 1999 when I began Brood War modding.

Collaboration is not really my thing, I'm a solo worker. Splintering from that is what got me in trouble with this project in the first place; I needed a character modeler and someone I have known for many years, and was a long-time reader of my writing, offered to help. But a year and a half passed and he continually expressed no interest in starting. I had hoped I could rip some assets from tera and edit them or something to fit what I needed, but I greatly underestimated the difficulty in modeling armor and such. So, this project is totally dead.

The last time I did major writing was in 2009 honestly. Though with this project going down, I've really considered trying to write again. This portion of the world (The Black Sun trilogy, being The Bloodstone Jordan, Salvation, and finally Retribution) are just backstory for one of the side races in the main plot. But it's the only portion that has any real chance of being portrayed in a movie/game because of how large scale the world and characters are. Despite that, I just wasn't able to do anything with it, even after 4-5 years of struggling to bring this particular project to a respectable state.

I know one other person who said they might be able to help with the character models, so I haven't entirely written off Retribution yet. But they are really busy, so it could be a very long time before any motion is made to that end.

And yeah, I like a lot of the Gundam ship designs. They are very very hard to model, though.

IskatuMesk, first of all I would like to say that I am truly, truly saddened by the death (well, indefinite postponement) of this project, but I understand that it has been a real struggle for you the whole way through and that at this point continuing work on it would have a very strong chance of still not leading to the finished product you were looking for.

But I am extremely impressed with with what you achieved alone, with no other entity paying you or enticing you to keep working on this project. And I'll never know the full extent of what you went through just to get this far but what you have shown here is truly commendable. Even if you may take so many opportunities to put yourself down at content creation, let me tell you that you do have inspiration and talent. You have gained my respect and no doubt that of anyone who has watched this project from its inception (well, since you made this thread). Your work is beautiful and painstakingly (literally) detailed, your vlogs hilarious, and your musical choice spot-on and distinctive. Speaking of music, what were the songs you used in the Test 19 video? I found them beautiful and somehow fitting in your universe. Actually, I have developed something of an interest in the Throne of Armageddon world and if you ever put your ideas down in writing or whatever form they take, please make a thread in these forums so that I and any others who care could follow you into your future endeavors.

And with that, I leave you with another bit of karma and bid adieu to Back Sun: Retribution. May it return someday!

Test 19 is using Yuki Kajiura - Aura.flac  and Yuki Kajiura - The World (Extra Version).mp3

TOA as a writing was left half-way finished in 2009 with most of the writing being 10 years old at that period, and thus in dire need of rewriting. However, it's like 600k words, so I never got even close to finishing it much less the two additional part novels. Even if I did, I wouldn't make it public. These forums won't exist by the time I make any marginal progress on that, if I even live that long.

I wish those I depended on shared your enthusiasm for the project. Maybe then it may have gotten somewhere.

I have decided to make the entire collection of the test recordings public. From when Retribution was nothing more than Salvation inside the new sins expansion to the bitter, agonizing end that was earlier this year, follow the project's chronology in test recordings destined for internal feedback during its many long months of production. Some videos come with assessments, some of which I may have forgotten. All in all, I think the test recordings far exceed Salvation in both length and overall production quality. Some contain experimental voice acting and cinematic efforts I was relaying to internal for critique, some are very short, some are very long.

All are now available for your viewing.

As to be expected, these videos probably contain spoilers for the full production should it ever be attempted again. If you still cling to the vain hope that it will be finished, I recommend avoiding them.

I yet delegate what to do with the actual Developer series. I would release it, but it contains critical writing information that is not necessarily set in stone. So, what I may do is provide it on a personal as-request basis.

If you honestly think you'd sit through many (many) hours of casted video regarding the creation of this project, personal issues, and all kinds of swearing/racial slurs, you're welcome to request the links. I don't have the entire series up, and I probably won't upload all of it, but yeah.

I have fully released the developer series portions that are currently uploaded. As you might expect, this casting is not for the politically correct. If you are interested in the kind of work that went on in this project, this is a good place to start.

http://www.gameproc.com/meskstuff/ret_devseries/retdev.html

If earlier episodes are requested, I'll upload them. But so far no one has watched any of it, so I won't bother because Canadian bandwidth is extremely tight and I have other video projects to worry about.

I have delegated for a long time whether or not Retribution should remain in Sins should it ever receive the much-needed character models. After a lot of thought, I have decided that I will never touch Sins of a Solar Empire ever again. This project would go full UDK if it was ever to be continued on. Although the likelihood of getting the needed resources is virtually non-existent, that is what I have consigned to.

As a result, I am releasing the entire particle source for the project. Test 19 is a good idea of where I left off in this work. Most of it is unfinished, of course, but some of it may be useful, as I continue to believe that these are some of the best particles ever created for this game.

This pack does not function on its own, in fact it's likely to just crash sins if you try to insert it as-is due to the texture entry limit. You, as a developer, have to research and make use of these effects yourself. But I've done much of the hardest work already. The pack doesn't include my Experiments directory, seen in the video, or any of the other external resources. Only what was actually in the game.

As to be expected, I should be credited for this if you use any of it, textures or otherwise (sans some textures obviously from bk or krdax). The videos only touch on the truly immense amount of work the particles alone for this project were.

I was only going to give this to SoA2 but I guess I'll just post it here. I am not providing any support for any issues you have with it. The videos say all that need to be said.

This project has been resumed as an Audiobook/radioplay. Production is expected to be completed in 2-5 weeks, depending how certain things go. The final product is expected to be 2:30-3 hours in length. I don't actually know how it will turn out, because it's been like 20 years since I've attempted something like this. But, whatever.

I'll post once more when this is done.

This video was released December last year, regaling the unsung legacy of Retribution's lengthy production, showcasing the Sins project in the stage it was discontinued at and showing many works in progress and things that have otherwise never been shown to the public beyond the dev videos, which were also released last year and account for over 50 hours of developer documentation regarding the project and the efforts behind it.

Additionally, here are some simple screen caps from some of the Anahn ships in Unreal 4 with some random placeholder material/lighting/whatever.

While I am still researching potential avenues to pursue Retribution as an Unreal 4 project, this yet remains a dream at best.

For fans of voice acting, I opened a soundcloud a while ago that has a lot of Retribution and Apex related material. I may have mentioned this in the past, but I'm mentioning it again due to the volume of new material.

I hope the particles and other assets I released in the past were of use to someone. I don't plan to mod again, but I will be releasing Unreal 4 content some time in the distant future. So, keep an eye on CC if that's where you predict your travels taking you.

Regards.

Fantastic Screenshots! And yes, some of your work is being used in Sins already. More will probably follow.
