New Regional Tournaments

Hi Guys,

The SOASE tournament seems to be having issues of people that have decided not to play (probably announced it too early) or are having difficulties arranging matches due to time zones.  So, I've decided to end the current tournament (and next planned global tournament) and start the new and improved regional tournaments this Friday.  The signup pages are: http://soase.challonge.com/americas1 (for Americas) and http://soase.challonge.com/europe1 (for Europe).  If there needs to be an Asia region then let me know, but I wasn't sure if there were enough players from Asia.  Otherwise, choose the most appropriate time zone.  The winners from each regional tournament would then play each other.  Hopefully things will move much smoother using this system.  So, what you need to do is:

1) Sign-Up for the Americas or Europe tournament using the links above, if you are fully committed to the tournament.

2) Pay attention to the discussion section embedded within the tournament you belong to (check daily).

3) You will get notified by email when the tournament starts on Friday.

4) Contact your opponent by sending them a private message on Challonge (this site) to arrange the game.

5) If no-one responds to a PM within 72 hours then they get a loss (please be honest).  Try your best to complete each game within a weeks time.

5) Play the game using the agreed rules on the main page of the tournament: Tempest Competitive Map (under Medium Maps), All Sub-Factions Allowed, No Wail, No Maw, No Jumping Starbases, No Pirates, Faster Game Speed, Quick Start On, No Z-Axis, No Spectators (possible cheating) .  Record the game for sharing and any disputes on rule breaks.

6) Winner or Loser from each game can mark the game on the actual bracket (please be honest).  You can also attach your replay to the bracket itself.

7) When you know your next opponent then start from step 4 above.

8) After two losses you are out of the tournament.

Thanks and hope to see a lot of you participate.

P.S. - PlayerSlayer and Doci are playing in the tournament!

I should also add that after the first tournament, seeds will be assigned and this seeding will be used for the next tournament, to help increase chances that the best players meet towards the end of the tournament and not the beginning (like the Final Four, Wimbledon, etc).

Reflex I do appreciate all you are doing to organize this, but I think you may have ended the tourney prematurely (did you really end it already?).  People's schedules don't always match up very well, but perhaps you can put a time table of like 1 week per round and any games that have not been finished are forfeited by the player who has not made a good faith effort to make a game work.  Clearly there will have to be mediation and exceptions but I think as a general rule this 1 week per round time limit will spur people to make time for their game.  I personally skipped 2 different 5s games and waited a good 30 minutes in lobby to play my game with krusher.  People need to be patient if they want to be in the tourney, simple as that.

This is why I've now made it regional.  When someone is from the Americas and playing someone from Europe (for example) it is difficult to do any day except the weekend unless neither have jobs.  The people that were active in the last tournament were also being active in the discussions.  Around half of the people didn't seem to be active at all.  Now that we have regional ones starting this Friday, I'll let them run their course no matter what happens.  It's not really that big of a deal as I see it as only 3 games were played so far.

no offense slowreflex but i just felt like i got robbed off of my 1v1 victory against ilihC. If i was able to play him with in the time frame then i think it would've been better to have transferred us to the following american region tournament.

anyways, i'm with brooks that the tournament was prematurely cancelled. we should've gave the other guys a chance to respond for a 1v1 match. there are things like family emergency's that can pop up or say unsuspected unpredictable work schedule changes and the likes.

You can't do things like transfer games automatically.  You were also one of the ones asking to make it a regional tournament!  The tournament had only just started and I did say it was a bit of an experiment.  We learned that it wasn't working great as a global tournament, so we've moved on.  I'm sorry if that's an issue for people.  You had a good match and the tournament is just for fun (not prizes or anything), so just look forward to your next match in the next tournament.  |-)

I appreciate you hosting the tourney but I think book and cilver stated valid points. The tourney was ended prematurely and without consultation of the people participating in it. I do feel a little robbed out of my hard won victory against mr book. Its inevitable that there will be time differences but people can make it work and if they don't its obvious that they shouldn't be participating in it. Theres many randoms who have signed up for the tourney who aren't regulars online, this is a clear indication. Your advertising efforts should be focused on the regular online community and less in forums. Also, I mentioned something about the bracketing on the tourney disccusion, it seems like it needs some fixing.

Well I'm hoping that you and others help advertise as well.  It's not just about me...

Look, the tournament is done.  It can't be restarted.  I'm sorry if you guys feel robbed.  There was only 3 games played and it was only around 5% completed.  I took the decision to have two better regional tournaments than to carry on with a global one that had issues.  I'm sure you'll agree in the long run.

We all appreciate the work you are doing Slow, but in the future please allow participants to voice their opinion before you do something like this.   You've been great about that up to this one instance, some of us are just frustrated that the tourney disappeared so suddenly.  We'd all like to see this thing grow but to do that it needs stability or people just won't join future ones, fearing it's going to just disappear again.

Rest assured, it won't disappear again.

is there a way to merge the brackets together from western (usa, canada, n. s. america) to eastern (china, eurasia) so that way we can easily keep track of how the players are doing on the other side of the world. also set up an event to have both sides agree on a match of say maybe 2 3 4 or 5 best of both side players to collide and have a group tourney :)

Not exactly.  What you can do is go to the main tournament page which shows all SOASE tournaments running and what stage they are at.  It's here: http://soase.challonge.com/

Also, please make sure you guys mention the tournament whenever you are on ICO.  That would really help.  We definitely need more people for Europe!

Americas up to 14 already!  Europe only at 4... where's the Europeans!?!?
