Broken saves

Got my saves invalidated by 1.04. I have steam.

I had a game going FFA against 7 vicious comps - not being friendly to any of them, at all - and I was actually gaining ground. This is on a 3 star system large random map. It was challenging and the first significant amount of time I put into rebellion. Also the first time I tried this (I wasn't restarting over and over to get good RNG placement).

Now I know you will go on and on about how there has been so much warning and blah blah blah. I read about that - after my game didn't work. I launch SoaSE from an icon on my desktop. I don't go to the forum or anything like that. So today I just started up my game and bam. Saves gone.

I bought sins in steam because it would be easy. This has destroyed the only real game I have in sins. I bet you think this rant doesn't have a point. Well, you'd be wrong.

Why does steam do well, even thwart piracy? Like I said: It's easy. This was awful - I bought sins awhile back, had played really since a few days ago - and I probably won't be playing again any time soon. Point is I *should have* pirated this. I only played the single player anyway, and it would've avoided this shit. Ironclad or Stardock or whoever decided this was simply too lazy or didn't care enough to write a simple one-time save conversion program and made the pirated version so much more appealing. They didn't take to time to do it right when it greatly affects EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of their users. You just don't fucking destroy saves like that in a huge 4x game where someone could have days of time into one game. (For reference, I have ~22 hours into that save - a majority of my free time over the last few days).

I won't be buying another SoaSE / Ironclad game again. That is a fact. You can go on and flame me, tell me 'good riddance', even get the mods to delete this, whatever, I don't really care. This is a one-and-only post. At the end of the day, Ironclad and Stardock lost a customer.

Version updates usually invalidate saves.

Well certainly unfortunate that the timing screwed you.

That said, at the end of the day can't keep everyone happy.

Honestly I hope you reconsider and give the game another chance once you get past your initial frustration.  The game has so much potential and it's always a shame to have someone leave over as case of bad timing and perhaps less-then-deal information distribution(as you said we got forewarning on the save breaking patch, but said warning would only really be seen by people who visit the website & forum).

oh yea..

Stardock told people for months that this patch would invalidate their saves. I'm sorry if you didn't get to see the memo, but they did try to warn people (they didn't used to before).

I agree I don't think steam was the best answer to this, but losing one save game seems like a bad reason to give up your investment on a game you'd otherwise enjoy.

Personally I've never played a game this long. I think you'll find that as you learn the game your game times will go way long. Further I'd argue this game plays closer to an RTS game, not a 4X even though they may advertise it as such.

This thread is 110% troll bait...ah fuck it I can't resist, I'm hook line and sinker for this one....

Here's my guess as to what is going to happen:

  1. This thread will get trolled by silly fanboys, steam haters, and pony pictures
  2. Some self-proclaimed "voice of reason" will try and tell the OP how ignorant and stupid they are, probably including some blabble about how you can turn automatic updates off and should have seen the thread warning the whole universe about the coming "patch to fix everything"....
  3. Just to alienate everone, I'll go off on that person for defending Starclad and steam while simultaneously telling the OP he's an ignorant asshat
  4. Sinperium will double check to make sure he reported this thread
  5. In the morning, Kyro will post something to the effect of "It's your own fault for not seeing the forum post that warned everyone v1.04 would be coming out and will not be save compatible"....then he'll lock the thread
  6. I'll have to start a new thread explaining that "forum post that warned everyone" actually only applies to forum regulars which is ~potato % of the total players who own sins
  7. That thread will get locked
  8. Some goody two shoes on the forums will tell me to stop trolling and contribute more to the community
  9. I will start a new thread titled "Let us beat dead horses with worn sticks AKA NERF THE DAMN JUMPING ORKY", in which I will likely just go off and alienate everyone
  10. Boshimi will post with pudding pictures
  11. Like everyone else, I'll have to write my own personal classy "FU Sins, I'm tired of this shit" thread and pretend like I'm leaving
  12. I'll secretly come back as "Qu5r", troll everyone, and tell Ooloo I miss his forum wit...

Well, I guess I lied about it being a 'one-and-only' post. This comment was just too 'good'

Yeah, just like in SC2 or any MMO or Homeworld or ... wait a minute. I see what you are doing. You are saying intentionally false things to make yourself seem right. At least I hope it is intentional, for your sake...

PS: GoaFan77, I have submitted a support ticket requesting a refund. We will see where it goes. Thanks for implying I am bad because playing against 7 cheating AI's wasn't quick and easy, super classy.

Well, that was more or less my plan.  Now that you've gone and spoiled the fun, I'll just get ready for the rest of your list..

RIGHT ON!

Because no other company (especially 4x game designer companies) ever does this..........

Unfortunately it seems the incident has left him frustrated and angry- and honestly I doubt the volumes of shit he's taking in this thread are soothing his nerves.

While I don't think I really endorse the extremity of his reaction, frustration is understandable- and I'm beginning to sympathize a bit now that about 90% of the posts in this thread are just stoking the coals.

NEXT!

I can't wait to see the next complaint thread...

this one was rather short in terms of the OP, but hey, whatever he wants...

I don't have to report it--it will report itself.  ;)

That does sorta suck, but your response is really entitled.

That said, there is a simple solution I think anyone that enjoys long save games or mods. It's a simple concept that all computer users used to use before they became dependent on online services and forgot the skill set.

*BACK UP YOUR GAME* Had you made a backup copy of Sins of a Solar Empire you could have restored it despite the patch.

Hell you can even play backed up copies via steam by registering the exe in the backup as a non-steam game or running it as administrator which I do to ensure mods continue to work.

It really sucks when you lose your save games because of an update.

A simple way to fix this would be to release a small patch a couple of weeks before the main update is released that adds "THE NEXT UPDATE WILL BREAK ALL SAVE GAMES AND WILL BE RELEASED ON xx/xx/xxxx" to the start menu of the game. Not everyone that owns the game checks the forum; this would give people time to finish up their save games.

Damn, I really underestimated the number of "voices of reason" that would contribute to this thread.....I also thought kyro woke up earlier...

hey

I am totally a voice of reason amidst a sea of discontent

it's just that my reason is slightly more cynical than most

You lost your save game because of a failure to prepare, not because of the update.

You people need to learn to back your shit up!

I really don't feel that it is fair to blame them for being unprepared.

It is only fair to condemn them if they whine about it much like this guy did. Now that these people are smarter about this subject, hopefully they will be more prepared in the future.

Also

what good would backing your games up if the update breaks them?

It's completely fair. This used to be common practice with PC owners if you didn't want to lose important data or programs. Maybe it's a lost art now, but PC gamers should rediscover it.

I've already answered that.

I didn't lose my save game. I suggested a way that would help people avoid losing them in the future.

Failure to prepare? Are you serious? Not everyone that owns SoaSE is going to look at the forum or even know when the next update will be, nor should they be required to. Nobody should be required to backup the entire game, there are better ways of informing the whole user base that your save game is going to die.

If it's important enough to you, it should be backed up. period. Otherwise, it's really just a minor inconvenience your investing a lot of time complaining about.
