The Huy Mac Attack

4 Vasari carrier caps + SB follow up

The Huy Mac Attack:
His annoying caps lock trolling aside, he likes to go 4 carrier caps (with an offensive SBs to follow) as Vasari now I've noticed and I was wondering what thoughts are on the best counter. It would be fun to counter troll that with 4 carrier Advent caps as they can host more strike craft and have the psychic push ability. I think Skirantas have a repair cloud though (?) and am not sure on their health/damage output compared to Advent carrier caps. I'm also thinking equal costs of just disciples and corvettes should do the trick but illums and defense vessels would be more ideal if the timing allows it. Any other suggestions?

I faced this yesterday but our team was dead before my battle with Huy was over - I didn't prepare for it
optimally though, wasting too much on a starbase, so I started wondering about the best counter.
It seems to have potential on maps with a close enemy where you can be uber aggressive and there's
no chance your neighbour will get a Titan out to punish you for going 4 caps. It's kind of cool
to see someone doing something different but he spoils it with his online antics.

And to think carrier cap spamming is considered different these days. v_v

Anyways, I really don't think Rebellion nerfed Skinatras (I vaguely seem to remember Repair Cloud no longer healing strikecraft...), so its probably just as powerful as it was in Trinity. It's just Corvettes can be used to chase down and finish off injured capitalships, making them more risky to rely on.

I'd argue it actually scales well into the late game even if it doesn't kill you quick. Having a sizeable force of bombers from capitalships makes his fleet less vulnerable to Chasitc Burst or the Maw, and since bomber swarms are still the preferred way of dealing with titans, the ability to constantly spawn more is always welcome at any stage of the game. There is the issue them stealing XP away from his titan if he eventually builds one, but I guess you could raid with them quite well too.

Yeah Titans (and corvette masses) have really overshadowed more capital ship heavy builds. I'm a little ashamed to admit there have been a couple cases where I've actually intentionally let my capital ship die by sticking around too long if it allows for finishing bombarding a planet, colonizing it, and opens up the capital ship slot for a Titan to start building that much sooner. Especially as Advent, I'd like to try out more capital heavy builds with the new Rebellion one (can never remember their names). The experience sharing though kind of kills keeping them together for the ability synergies until much later in the game when they're levelled and join back up. Next time I get an eco slot, I'll see how viable a tri-directional expansion with 3 capital ships is, ignore going for my own Titan, and just feed for allies' Titan instead.

I would suggest you just do a conventional spam of TEC LRM spam, mixed with some flak. It doesn't take too long to get, its gives a ton of forward firepower, and is difficult to counter quickly. The LRM will knock down weaker SBs, kill his caps, and drive back any titans that you may have to face, The flak will keep corvettes and fighters at bay so your lrm don't get wiped out.

This strategy also allows you to build a big fleet quick, then eco so you can build more powerful ships like titans or orgevs to deal with higher level SBs. The only problem is if he SB rushes fast enough, you will not be able to counter.

If you must go Advent, you best bet is to carrier spam with corvette support. Do NOT build more than 2 carrier capital ships because they die too easy at lower levels. Focus on leveling up the two that you have. Remember that you only need about half the number of fighter squadrons to counter your opponents bombers. This should not be a problem as advent. This will force your opponent to build flak and LF, which are countered by illums and disciples.

Advent are not ideal for countering vasari though because their eco is weak. It takes forever to build enough ships to be effective. By that point, Huy may have STTC, which is a death sentence for an advent player. You best bet (depending on how far away your vasari opponent) may be to use the advents wonderful opening rush of LF and corvettes. Keep in mind though that this strategy is not very good against SBs. It will push your opponent back though so you can take more worlds though IF they do not successfully get a SB on one of your worlds.

HuyMac is a troll, and his strategies are equally trollish...any VL in eco is likely going to be going very cap heavy with their fleet, HuyMac just prefers to go all out on the skirantras and in my experience is not any better than another other Vasari whore...if anything, his fleet is easier to deal with because he rarely has multiple instances of JW, disruptive strikes, or gravity warhead...sure, repair aura is annoying but it doesn't stack and fleeing caps will quickly get out of range of the other skirantras...such a fleet is only a problem if he gets lots of overseers, but then that's not different than any other mid game VL fleet (except his has no diversity)...

Early game, the massive investment needed to even get 4 of any capital ships means he will have virtually no fleet...spamming LFs and Corvettes is unquestionably the best strategy for multiple reasons:

  • You don't need much lab investment (one military lab), and you can amass large amounts of units quickly
  • Corvette/LF fleets can easily hunt down fleeing caps and their speed allows them to micro better around Orkies
  • If used properly, the corvettes will absolutely massacre any bombers he tries to field
  • The amount of LFs and Corvettes you are going to be able to get by the point he has 4 caps will be sufficient to overwhelm an Orky under construction or an annoying skirantra...investing in illuminators or defense vessels in this particular situation is really bad due to the upfront costs, the dependency on labs (which might get wiped by SB or bombers), and the slow speed of LRFs...
  • If you are TEC, corvettes plus LRFs may be to your benefit, but just remember the LRMs are slower and your fleet can now be countered by a single unit (flak)...

The funny part is that, until just recently, "Huy" was more often than not his teenage nephew/cousin, who you could easily roll over but who would try and emulate the Huy "playstyle". He was at least generally quieter and less annoying. The chat spamming all caps delusional bitching/trolling Huy was a sure-fire way to know which was which. Either that or it's always been the same person with a trolling split personality who suffers from Parkinsonian fits when he plays as the teenage cousin Jake version.

See all the fun you're missing SP people? ;P

I believe they are the same person...but who am I to judge other trolls?
