Sins merchandiise

Ironclad,

Just a suggestion, you guys should see about meeting up with a good quality diecast model manufacturer and consider selling Diecast models of the ships from SoASE, You could sell them for $15 bucks from the Sins store so I could play......I mean collect them.

I think that this depends on the quality that they'd want to get from the models, and the amount they want to sell; do they want to sell large quantities, or do they want these to be more akin to a collector's item?

I think EVE Online actually did a pretty good job with this; they have ~12" long models of a battleship from each faction in the game, composed of resin and painted&mounted up for you- the downside is that it costs about US$70 apiece. But for the quality you get- it's quite impressive.

I'm personally partial to a resin casting- you can fit a lot more detail into resin than into a metal; for some models, that's obviously not going to be a problem- but for others? Resin's a much better choice. Then again, Sins models aren't super-heavy on detail with the model itself- details tend to come out of the textures instead.

Overall, I *love* this idea. I'd have the TEC strikecraft sitting on a shelf, along with an Arcova scout frigate and an Antorak Marauder....... and that's just what I'd start with!

I like the idea but I like to keep it somewhat affordable so we could get all the Capital ships and some or all of the other ships, don't want to pay $70 a piece for like 30-50 ships. I mostly want the Capitals, I love all the designs and I'd love to put them next to my Star Trek, Star Wars, BSG models.

Well, the thing is, if they went that route, then they'd almost certainly have only a few models available- at most, all the races' capital ships, but no cruisers, frigates, or strikecraft. OTOH, given the relative levels of detail that are built into the models and textures compared to EVE Online's assets, the resin casts of a Sins capital ship would probably be US$40-50, rather than EVE's US$70.

It's also likely that Sins models could very well be minted in smaller moulds.

EDIT:

I'll also note that I personally would totally buy a couple of EVE's resin models- but there's only two that I particularly like, so it's more affordable that way. It's likely the same for a lot of people; they're far more likely to have only a few favorite designs, so those are what they would buy- not any others.

I'll take a TEC starbase, and a Kol please :3

I think resin casting would be the way to go, but the initial cost to get something decent made would be too high for the number we'd probably end up selling.

I have a cheap 3D printer. I'm going to make a small Kol and post a picture.

  Make a Dunvo, send it my way!!!!

Are they paintable btw? I dont know how your 3D works.

Yes and no.

I am currently optimizing them, a rigorous process.

Not models, but we do have something in the works.......

They are paintable.

Maybe I'll print a Dunov first.

@Island Dog, in the works?

Sweet and Sweet!

If you get one printed, I might buy one off you and paint it for fun.

you can't buy one off of me.

It's licensed to Ironclad.

I am willing to send you one for free, however, though I make no promises on quality.

I just finished optimizing the Dunov's insides, and boy are they messed up to begin with. I was able to delete 200 unused polygons, I also deleted the tiny laser nubs on the sides and back, as the printer can't handle them.

Here's the finished mesh, ready to be printed:

What style of printer do you have KD? Resin that is UV cured, metal, shaver based, sintered powder?

ABS Extruder.

Cheap little thing.

One of the self-replicating Reprap project variants.

Makerbot Cupcake CNC

It does do a rather good job though.
