Fat Cartoon Look WHY?

How come these freak-o-zoids are ruining my games?  What's with the fat cartoon look?  Call it what you want.

WoW - ROTLK has cartoon wolves, fat dumb baby faced 15 foot tall yetti, and other stupid, out of preportion junk.

Torchlight release a dungeon crawler looking like it's made for 7 year olds with comic outbursts.

Settlers 7 went cutesie also.

Elemental just did this too.  Avatars and monsters look like dolls, or plastic toys you get @ McDonald's.  Why, why, why, why, why, why?  Next we are getting circle, triangle, square puzzles, and hanging sing-a-long moblies?  Why?

When the evil marking people wanted more girls to play and we got yelling chicks with swords, it's weird, but...ok whatever.  Now we get 3 yr olds?  omfg?  Is this the Chinese?  Is this Korean?  Where is this baby-fantasy look coming from?  Target the nuke and drop it now.  This is a HUGE turn off.  I can't put that in CAPS large enough.  Just stop now.  I just puked in my mouth. :(

I would suggest listerine

Well I happen to find Alexstrasza attractive (... in both forms...).

SO THERE!

(wRath of the lich king??)

Its easier to do (cheaper) and has broader appeal (mass market). WoW has resonable advacned graphics compared to some of this crap though.

I totally disagree with the OP.. I like the art style.. could it be tweaked some sure why not.. but it has its own look and feel.. I respect that the OP does not like it ..  however I do not want it to change.

I respectfully disagree.  I really liked how Torchlight looked.  Desktop Defenders also looks like it's going to be fun, but I'm sure you won't like that either.

Well, it's just devs realized the 15-years-old male demographic (ie, the only one that actually cares about such things) isn't as profitable as they thought.

Don't worry, once you reach full adulthood you'll finally stop caring about it. Until then, well, I guess there's always moar Counter-Strike.

I haven't noticed any deformation. Only thing I've noticed graphically is that cavalrymen don't know how to ride horses. Which is probably because their legs couldn't go far enough apart without looking weird.

Because having every game try to look ultra realistic with 160 shades of brown isn't as great as its cracked up to be. :P

Don't you dare compare Elemental's style to WoW.

On behalf of the entire universe, I am sad.

Indeed. World of Warcraft looks WAY better than Elemental.

I really like the look of Elemental -- impressionistic without being cartoony.

To each, their own...

It's also distinctive.  It's important for a game to be immediately recognizable from a quick glance at a screenshot.

I like Elemental's graphics.  I think that part of the reason HOMM2 is still played is because the distinctive, stylized graphics don't age nearly as quickly as the "realistic" style of HOMM3's graphics.

Best regards,
Steven.

Um, ok...can't say I agree with you....this game looks great, perhaps your settings are all at low?

Humm.... are you still thinking of those early screens form 2003? Cos Im thinking about the Wrath and Cata zones and stuff....

I just really like the art style of wow, it has a 'realistic' edge to it while still being stylised and not competing with the 'cutting edge' MMOs like FFXXX.

I really like how they put colour into stuff also.

Nah, the style Elemental has isn't cartoony. They don't have huge sized shoulderpads like in WoW, or exaggerated anatomy like in other MMOs, or Fable.

Seriously, they look pretty normal to me:

It's possible that game developers make their avatars ugly to boost the self esteem of players, when they stop once every week to take a shower, when they look in the mirror and find themselves better looking in reality than virtual reality.

Or they just like to mess with ya.

Oh, man...them's fightin' words!

Yeah, while I enjoy the cartoony style of WoW in WoW...I megaloathe it outside of WoW.

I'd say Elemental's style DESTROYS WoWs style in every way.

EDIT: Except for coloration and variety.

I think there could be more variety in the models, units, and armors of the characters in Elemental but I actually like the art style. I don't think its much of anything like Warcraft... at all. I also don't even mind Warcraft's art style. Perhaps you should try Spellforce 2, you'd probably like the art style.

EWoM's art style is unique. It's not generic, and that is a good thing imo...I like it actually, but it's not for everyone obviously. Besides...gameplay >>> gfx anyway. :)

yeah i like the elemental art style as well.  its prob not my first choice, but its certainly enjoyable.

In theory FF XIV looks really nice. In reality to keep it from crashing every 2 minutes I needed to run it windowed mode at less then full resolution, with AA and many other effects disabled. That kind of art style does NOT degrade well, and it looks bloody awful. Maybe when the game is stable it will look "cutting edge", because right now it just looks like a crash screen. :P

I like the Elemental style, except that the color is a little lacking. The whole world just looks sort of.... faded, and that bothers me. But that has very little to do with the so-called "cartoon" look (which was actually modeled after stained-glass windows by some artist I forget the name of, not cartoons).

When people say cartoon its because they don't know what else to call it.

Styalised is the common word since it can mean anything in the bracket of 'not-realistic'.

Btw I love the should pads and oversized weapons in wow first they help you see things more clearly and they make your character much more bulky and cool.

Granted before I started playing I was like "WoW? Thats a kiddie game!" but since I actualy got my first peice of 'big shoulders' (which was herods from SM) I really loved wearing it on my blue space girl.

The world of Elemental just needs a double rainbow.
