Impulse archive -> Not exchangable between different OS?

Today I tried the archive option on the elemental beta. My stationary machine has Win7 64bit and my laptop XP 32bit. I tried to archive the game from Win7 and load the archive on my XP machine. Impulse was telling me that it is only possible bearing the same OS. Will this be changed in the future or what is the restriction behind? I thought it more or less deploy the files, but most probably this is not the case.

I'm asking as I don't want to upgrade my laptop to Win7 even if I still have a free license and additionally, if I burn my archives on a DVD for later use, most probably a few years afterwards I don't have the same OS as used during the archive. How about updates of the OS - will I literally have to download all the games I want to play again? And to be honest, I don't really like to download the same stuff double (have no real flatrate but a 5GB limit per month).

Thx in advance

Wyl

Archives created from an existing install are not cross-OS compatible, no. However if you use the Download Archive option for a product that is not yet installed, or get it via Impulse Anywhere, those will be able to install on any supported version of Windows.

A good number of games can simply be copied directly, then added to Impulse via the Detect Application option and reactivated, but applications or products with (for example) third party protection will have additional dependencies outside their own folders, OS specific components, etc., and this won't work there. It's for these products that the restriction exists (customization apps are a very big part of our business).

Download archive....good to know.  I ran into this problem when I moved to a new computer.  I just redownloaded everything, but I'll try the download archive option.  (That way on Monday or Tuesday, I can download it at work and bring it home and install it here at home :)  )

Less downtime before playing FTW.
