Some intros that do things a bit differently:

Alternate Reality Dungeon Intro

Watch how everything is timed to the music, and then the twist where everything turns into a sing-along musical is just brilliant (which continues for special establishments and encounters for the rest of the game).

Might & Magic V: Darkside of XEEN Intro

New World Computing, for a while, always had fun with their logotype. This one is brilliant (especially if you've seen the previous ones) and the rest of the intro is equally charming. The Dragon Pharaoh is on par with Yoda, I think.

The intro that amazed me when I was but a small kid watching his father play video games : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru6Fndq6uks&feature=related

The game's name was "Epic", and indeed the soundtrack was Epic, and so were the game graphics, back then. I remember we launched the game just to watch it again xD I still remember it, years later, even though I played many many many games since then.

OMG LOOM!

That's one of the first computer games I was really ever able to play.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Elemental Beta's 8-bit intro.

For me, it's either Bubble Bobble or Diablo II.

Yeah, I really like that one. I kind of hope that they'll keep it in the full game, although I guess they probably won't.

The best game intro I've ever experienced is Homeworld.  It's also worth a look because the way it blends the hand-drawn visual style in the first section with the 3D elements later reminds me somewhat of the visual style we've glimpsed in the Elemental engine.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrW4jkQdmjI

Another favorite of mine is the Freespace 2 intro, although it's a pale second to Homeworld.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khIWdolT9xY

The things these two share that make them work for me are a sense of the history and setting of the world I'm about to enter, fantastic and appropriate music, and killer voiceovers.  The sense of melancholy  they share would also fit well into an Elemental intro.

Also worth an honorable mention is Myst.  Can't say I really loved the game, but it was a great intro.  Not sure how applicable it would be to Elemental, though.

I'm surprised you left out these, Elemental's great grandparents have great intros:

Master of Magic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMNk-YlpuBo

Civilization - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlPfjlyMdfk (admittedly, pretty much just the music here)

Master of Orion 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgfzf2AXWxA

And a few other of my all time favorites:

Zak McKraken - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OspGbCi2ve8

Syndicate Wars - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrruSboN1bQ

Dungeon Keeper - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N5ODEGR1KQ

Star Control II - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3guaqAj5EVM
