Looking for an Idea of what Tactical Combat will look like.

Looking for an Idea of what Tactical Combat will look like.

I was just wondering if it was possible to get an idea from froggy about what they envision the tactical combat engine will look like. I know it isn't till beta 3 or 4 and I am not in any way advocating or saying I want it right now.  But after 40 or so playthroughs already I am curious what we can expect for a starting point.

I.E. are you guys envisioning a MoM type combat engine for the turn based, or are we looking at more of a Starcraft like real time engine. Are we envisioning a total war like engine since obviously when we start kicking out regiments and legions that is going to be a whole lot of bodies.

Since we are hopefully closing in on the end of beta one and headed torwards the MP side of things. Might be good to get the discussions rolling before it gets to far to really tweak to much. Especially since the way tactical combat plays out will have alot of influence on what we are looking for with units, tech, and equiptment.

And from some of the screenies I have seen you guys obviously have something already at least started if not nearing completion.

Ya for MP it really should be real time base mode. It would be nice to not have to impose a timer for MP games just to keep some (like me) from holding up the game for to long. When I first read about Elemental I thought the tactical screen was intended to convert from TBS to RTS style. So that way once one was in the battle field and all units have there instructions one could just "posses" ones favorite unit and go Hack and Slash and have a bit of sandbox style fun.

For single player I do not mind having it like AoW had it because I can make the computer AI wait for hours if I want to and still have fun.

I found this in the "Elemental for dummies" thread:

Battles are turn based. However, by default, they are continuous turns (turn button pushed automatically but can be turned off).

This is good news for me.

I'm lobbying for a total war style battle system. It really is a lot more epic and visceral than the slow MOM-style.

It'll be more akin to Master of Magic's battles but not tile based (since units have different combat speeds, tiles become impractical) and with nicer graphics.

Now by combat speed do you mean rate of attack? Or movement speed? Or some sort of initiative deal?

How can you beat MoM's graphics? They are state of the art!

You could do something like Heroes of Might and Magic where larger units take up multiple tiles.

I lurv that newer screenshot. Go go gadget fire breath!

BTW: The Ye Olde screenshot is clearly a mockup - that's why it looks so different than the newer screenshot. It doesnt have any UI either, that's just to show the concept of the UI.

I assume frogboy means that if they try to do any reasonable number of tiles, minute differences in combat move speed become useless.  THey need a higher speed-resolution (so to speak).
