Not enough ship options

A few years ago I purchased GalCiv and GC2.  I played them both and enjoyed them, but I quickly became bored with them.  I've not played now for years.   It took me a while, but I soon figured out why;

There just aren't enough strategic decisions to be made with the ship building / combat strategy.   Every battle is simply a game of rock/paper/scizzors.  (Lasers, misiles, cannons)

Wouldn't it be nice if we had more variety avaliable in our combat.   Ultra long range but slow fireing weapons, fast hard-to-hit ships with weak weapons, weapons with effects like slowing the enemy ships, splash-zones, cloaking, decoys, armor erosion, tractor beams, etc.   How about some obstacles too, like debris, asteroid fields, plasma clouds, radiation belts, etc.

Of course, the ability to influence combat would be quite appreciated as well.   Even if it was simple commands like; close combat, long range, target ship, engage speial item, etc.

the game just lost depth for me when I realized that the funnest part of the game - combat, was, well, shallow.

I am hopeful that maybe a future iteration will allow for more.

For me, the funnest part of the game is developing my empire, with a minimal emphasis on combat - Out of all games I've played, only one win was due to eradication of my enemies. The rest of the times, I won mostly through Tech/Influence, with a few Alliance and Ascension wins.

Doesn't sound like GC is the game for you. There is a definate strategy to the game, but not on the combat side. It's an X-Y-Z affair at it's heart and soul. If you can give up a nice interface, Hard AI (which can be adjusted with mods and game options), and modern graphics you can try Space Empires V. It's combat is more involved and it's a similar game.
