CPU maxing out

This is wierd.  My CPU's keep maxing out. When I look in Task Manager, explorer.exe is running from 40 to 60 or even 80%. I have run AVAST, Trend Micro, SPybot, and even uninstalled AVAST and installed Comodo.

Trend Micro found SPYWARE_KEYL_KGBKEYLOG and removed it. FreeFixer found a folder in my Programs called 'Runit'. INside that were 'runit_32', runitu_32', and a text file that had nothing in it. ALl are fixed. Yet nothing has changed.

I looked this up and found people having numerous problems to mine, but no consistent reasons behind it and no solutions. The most common had to do with creating a new user account and moving your files over. However, I tried to do a system restore and after I ran it it said it was unsuccesul. I also am unable to create a new user account or edit mine or my wife's.

RUnning WIndows Vista Home Premium SP2.

ANy one else run into this?

Boot to your Vista disc and try to do a system restore from the repair menu.

It sound to me like you may have a virus preventing a restore. Only way around it is to boot from a different source.

Running it for the last hour. SO far it found 3 more. Waiting for it to finish to see what they are.

*2 hours 12 minutes in- we now have 4

Yep...malwarebytes is the best for the job, Po'.

Bet it'll be fine when you finish.

I doubt it. Yrag PM'd me and he thinks I may need to do a fresh install. Still waiting for it to stop scanning.

I ran the hardware diagnostics. Everything was good, which is hopeful. Last time I got hit with something (my old PC) my hard drive and memory showed as corrupted.

Well...Yrag knows 'puters. Period. Still...don't cross the bridge before you get there.

You might also wanna scan your external storage and any other machines you have. Couldn't hurt.

/me notes that Po' hasn't been real active lately . . but then . . when he needs something  . . . where does he go?  Back to us.

He's such a  . . . well . . I can't say.  But he is.

Zubaz should ask Po what's up before he makes assumptions.  Just because  Po doesn't appear active doesn't mean he isn't around every day.

I'm even on messenger.

Found a total of 8 nasty little bugs. Quarentined/reboot..still same problem and limited cmd access. Running sfc/scannow. sigh.

sfc found some items it could not repair. All in 'sidebar'. So, I ran dskchk. Well, when I rebooted, dskchk never ran and now I can't get on the PC. It won't even boot in safe mode. I'm pretty much screwed at this point.

Can you boot from the Rescue disks you have?

Yrag hit it dead on. Where the hell did you get those nasties?

The one DVD is bad. I'm pretty much screwed. I read that I might have been able to repair Vista if I had the Vista disc, but not with the damn recovery/partition I have because I buy these damn prepackaged PC's.

This pretty much puts me out of the game.

Now, you can comment on my not being active.

PO...it's chkdsk not dskchk. Could be the reason it didn't run.

If you have a copy of the Win 7 RC it might work to try a restore.

Is there someone you could borrow a Vista disc from?  You do not have to activate or register to perform a repair, so that would work if you can get your hands on one.

Thing is, I had similar issues a few years back (racing CPU, operating anomolies) and it turned out to be my mobo was on its way out.  Hopefully that's not it in your case.

Being that Win 7 and Vista are very similar, this may be possible... when doing a Vista repair recently I noticed Win 7 was present in the repair menu.

With as bad as it has gotten, right now I just want to get the stuff off of the drive thta I can't replace.  I don't know if installing anything or trying to repair it will eat up this stuff or what.

Everyone I know is still on XP and probably bought the same type of prebundled stuff I did.

Thanks for the help and advice though. I appreciate it. It's been a long day.

Noah, if you pm me your address, I'll make you some discs.  I just bought a new Toshiba Satellite laptop and rather than discs, it came with a recovery disc creator program.  I have some extra DVDs, so it wouldn't be much trouble to burn you a set.

Thanks. I think I'm going to concentrate on getting the stuff off the drive for now. I've been trying to fix the thing for a few days, running scans and all. It's been going non-stop and the CPU has been maxed out most of the time. I'm not sure if I have damaged it physically or not. I'm not getting anything when I boot it. It's just a black screen and the fan and all are racing like there is no tomorrow.

I like the Toshiba 's. I'm on my wifes laptop and it's been really good for her. I upgraded her memory a few months ago and it fly's. She's never had a problem with it.

I'll leave the offer open for you.  If at any time you want to me make you the discs and send them to you, just shoot me a PM.
