Question for Skinners: Are you updating themes for Windows 7?

Question for Skinners: Are you updating themes for Windows 7?

I wanted to get a general feel from the skinners about Windows 7.  I know some of you already have updated some WindowBlinds themes to get them ready for Windows 7, and I wanted to see who else is doing similar work.

  1. Do you plan on updating previous WB skins to work with Windows 7?
  2. Are you creating new WB skins just for Win7?
  3. Do you plan on making skins compatible with XP, Vista, and Windows 7, or just one of them?

Thanks in advance to any skinners who answer.  :)

I've totally finished my moving to Win-7 today. Good bye XP (because too old) and Vista (because it requires too much resources). I've removed these both OS forever (together with all old stuff). The future is much better than past...

1. No.

2. I've done new WB skin which support all of Win-7 visual effects. Besides I made a new skin for IE8 (without using WB).

3. For Win-7 only because I'm always going forward and have no desire to return back. XP and Vista are in the past...

To the Skinning Community, I'm not a skinner, so feel free to take what I say with a grain of salt, but I do have a viewpoint that represents at least one enthusiastic user of Wincustomize's library of skins. Among the skins I have in my possession are DogmaX and SouLuna, two skins that are virtually legendary in the skinning community. I always seem to turn back to these two skins when I get tired of the glitz and glamour of today's skins. I will sorely miss them when I upgrade to Windows 7 at the end of October. I think there are a number of issues and questions involved with upgrading the old skins to new ones: 1. If a skin was within the top five to ten percent of the download list during it's era and scored high in the ratings, then I think it is not only worthwhile for the original creator to upgrade them, but I think there is at least a smidgion of obligation to each and every one of their skins users. After all, they posted them for all to freely use and many did just that. Now that they are "hooked", these users would feel somthing akin to grief if parted from them. The larger the user (download) base that uses the skin, the higher the obligation. However, if I created a skin that didn't make a splash, it seems to me that I'd make better use of my time making a new skin instead. 2. If you're going to upgrade/update a past skin, one should do his/her best to maintain the overall look and feel of the original skin, and hopefully put most of their creative efforts into adding in the new features found in WB5-WB7. Otherwise, why make an update at all? Changing the whole skin from it's original appearance would negate the whole point in updating it in the first place. 3. Both the skins that I mentioned in the first paragraph above, appear to be unlucky to have absent or missing creators. Attempts on my part to contact them have failed. What will happen to these venerable pieces of skinning work? 4. And then there are those, who for whatever reason, don't want to skin anymore, or just don't want to bother to update their old skins? With the proper permisssions and atributions, would it be possible for some volunteer skinners to adopt an absent creator's top rated/downloaded skin and do as suggested in "2" above? 5. I actually plugged the following idea to Stardock support: Have an update/upgrade contest of some sort, so we can encourage the creators of some of these older skins to get up off the laurels of their past successes and make their old skins into new (comment about laurels present company excepted, or you wouldn't even be reading this). Comments welcome of course, even it's to tell me hogwash, ignoramous, or heaven help me... idiot! Clair

but I also support progress and would love to see people move away from XP to something new and modern. There's a ton of time consuming bits to XP skins that are annoying to do.

my sentiments exactly!

Adding yet another OS does create a dilemma for skinners. I don't think anyone should be expected to make skins for 3 different OS' so the original questions are valid.

What you don't want is large sections of users feeling left out because there are no new skins for them. The reality is the majority are still going to be using XP. It's going to take a long time for people to adopt W7. It will happen eventually, but not the way the move from 98 to XP happened. Vista has left many with a nasty taste in their mouth, not something easily overcome.

I agree that making skins for WB4 will eventually have to come to an end, preferably sooner rather than later.  What happens two years from now when MS releases Windows8 ?  Will skinnners have to make skins for four different OS's?   I think not.

However, I do see (possibly a desperate) need for skins that WB7 users can use right away, and I think that the fastest way to do that is to update the best of the older skins. Since those skins already include support for WB4 - WB5 and a smaller but signficant fraction WB6, that I think is where our efforts should initially start. Once we have a good selection of updated skins, then, by all means, move on and make skins for Vista and Windows7 only.  Personally, I can't see how we can get to that stage in under a year.  Some especially good skinners dominate my current collection. and updating all of those seems to me would be a herculean task.

Edit:  To Stardock....  I really enjoyed many of the demo skins that came with earlier versions of WB.  That might be a good place to start.

Yesh. I suppose we'll be seeing endless W7 clones.

Don't get me started on this subject, I just end up seeing red >:(

I've been slowly updating some of my skins for Vista, but I think I'm going to stop. I also think Vista is going to go the way of the Dodo bird rather quickly once the final version of Win7 comes out. So I don't see any point in updated something for an already half-dead OS.

AMEN!

This in mind, if I do get into blinds, I will probably just skin Vista and Seven. I hear that XP is a Vitch and I am currently having trouble getting it installed anyway.

Well as I see there seems to be a few individuals who are against the cloning of windows 7 which is really surprising to me. As Microsoft is actually encouraging people to make Visual Styles of Windows 7 for personal use and for upload. Mabe I am wrong but I think if someone actually takes the time to make a windowblind theme and go that extra mile maybe they should be embraced instead of critifized. AFter all, its very easy to make the Visual Styles. Microsoft even has a How-To for anyone who wants tor try....

I've already tried to do this... As a result my IE8 has been totally reskinned without using of SKS and WB and looks very great. And now I nearly found the way to make this with another parts of OS...

This work takes a bit more time. However the modifying of files like *.msstyles, shell32.dll, imageres.dll, etc... will allow me not only reskin the window borders and taskbar but to change the style of any applications and icons. And no any problems with bugs and OS compatibility...
