Out of Memory Errors Persist...

Hello,

I've had this game for a while and, just recently (after installing my game again without having touched it in over two years) I've been plagued by the infamous 'Out of Memory' errors. I'll post my information in the Debug.err below, but first I can't seem to figure out what's causing these errors. It doesn't matter what map I'm on, because after a certain amount of turns and saves, it crashes on my next save- this is highly frustrating for me.

Any help or insight would be appreciated, Debug below...

Rather than spam staff with another Topic on the same subject I want to bring to your attention that I am also suffering this effect. Here is a screen shot of what appears when my game tries to autosave.

(EDIT: My photobucket account isn't uploading. No screenshot)

I have made some head way in assuming that Autosaving is the problem behind this. Is it that our games are too big in kb that the game cannot allow them to expand? If so does that mean we cannot continue our game?

My game save file is currently around the 13,000kb.

Game Description:
I am playing on a Gigantic map with 8 races and minor race. 2 extra minor races established themselves making 10 minor races. Everything is abundant (appart from habitable planets with is just common) and accension victory is turned off. I'm playing a custom race with 2 extra customs, this is a metaverse game. Currently 5 major and 1 minor race remain and everyone is at wars so ships are been created at a rapid pace.

Hm... only an idea of me... but I guess the problem is in Your mod.

A year ago or so, I had the same problem and the Error log / Debug Info, especially the last four lines,
were similiar to yours.

In my case, the problem was, that I had too much and too big ship textures in my mod.
Countless textures with a size of 1024 x 1024 pxs need very much of memory.
In 'my' mod were many ships from different star trek and star wars mod files out of the library, and other
sources.

After I reduced the texture sizes the 'out of memory' prob was gone. BTW I also deleted the
HRG mod.

Hope this can help You.

I had this problem in the stock DA game and Kryo suggested moving the slider for planet textures all the way to the right.  I've had no more memory crashes since doing that.

sorry to burst your bubble the only modifications I have are custom races... And it was only on that one game, every other game I've run up till now has been near perfect.

Same here, except it hasn't helped. I have all textures turned right down to bare minimum.

Extremely large and "dense" (huge numbers of planets and ships) games consume a lot of memory. If there is not enough available to complete the save process when that time comes, the save is going to be corrupted once the game hits the 32-bit 2GB ceiling. Nothing can salvage that save; since the game was interrupted midway through writing it, it's not even complete.

If you're running into OOM errors and you're not using any mods or additions to the game at all on TA, there's not really much else to do but try dialing the planet density down a notch or reducing the amount of stuff on the map by other means.

I guess i'm restricted from playing Gigantic maps then. Well I can't really complain I was on my 7th year when it cut out so the score would have been going down.

Thanx for updating us on that Kryo. Question though, If you PC has a stronger gaming capacity (Aka it's got more features, more up to date hardware and driver software) would the game have a larger memory capacity?

The problem is the 2GB limit for 32 bit Windows applications.  I expect even if you where running the game on 64bit Vista a 64bit CPU you would still hit this limit as GalCivII ToA is a 32bit application.

I am starting to run out of memory too. Could this be due to the number of ships in my ship files folder? This happens when I make a ship design or build ships from my 8 planets. How about an old video card, I have ATI X1550. Will also check my planet density.

ok, so if i'm understanding this correctly. it is impossible to play this game with everything turned up? i cant figure out why a game would be released with such a huge design flaw.

I also seem to have run into OOM crashes again.  Turning down most of the non-ship textures to zip seems to have bought me a few dozen turns, but that's it.

Nuts.  I sure seem to recall reading folk tell of epic games on max settings.  I have ships now with attack and defense factors over 300 and am in a position to really turn the corner in my first gigantic Suicidal game ... and may not be able to finish it.

What game settings would let me complete a long DA game?  Dail down from Gigantic?  Fewer AIS?  Fewer Minor races?

Help!

When I build a ship or buy a ship and get into a attack then the turn is over and it saves that turn that is when I get my OoM crashes.

I'm beginning to wonder it the OOM crashes might be due to a "memory leak" or some such similar bug, perhaps inadvertently created by a patch.

IIRC, Birth of the Federation suffered from a bug of that sort, as have a few other games.  In BOTF, the memory leak bug would cripple or crash the game sometime around turn 150 on the greatest settings.  With the much greater memory in today's machines (2 gig RAM versus some # meg in 1999), it might simply take longer for it to bring the game down.  In some memory leak crippled games, frequent saving and then, when it crashed, starting from the previous save would buy a player a bit more time - just as I am experiencing here.

Can the Devs or anyone rule out a memory leak as the cause of the OOM crashes?

There are not any currently known memory leak issues that I'm aware of.

Okay - but do note that the symptoms seem to be similar.  I am not a code guy though, so I do not know how one would determine if there was (or was not) such a bug.  All I know is that I keep having these "out of memory" crashes on both my computers in different games when I finally get to the late mid-game with gigantic maxed-out galaxies.

Last night, one major race surrendered to me (I was not at war with them) and the game crashed while trying to save.  I restarted, loaded, and now they surrender to my arch rivals!  Twice since, I have reloaded in an effort to get them to surrender to me as they originally did, but no luck.  Without that crash, I would have gained their 30-ish planets instead of the race that is ahead of me already in stats.  Grrrrr!

This is getting absurd.

I have to save multiple times per turn now, and it's a near-miracle to advance a turn.

Have players actually played deep into a gigantic everything-abundant game?

All of the 9 major races are still there as are 2 of the minor races.  The top several races have pretty much researched everything, and the factors on the ships are huge.  Most of the mine resources are unmined now.  I have two that I am still guarding hard with fleets - a Green and a Red.  I abandoned a Purple one or two, as the research job was about done.

It's a great game.  It really is, but I may just have to throw up my hands and go play some other game I can actually have some chance to finish.  Maybe go back to Crysis, or Total War, or something.

I got to admit, I'm beginning to turn away from Galciv2 because of this pretty serious error (Just after i'd gotten back into it too). You get really into a game and about half way through it totally corrupts on you and you feel so disappointed that you don't want to do it all over again.

I'm finding myself becoming more addicted to Age of Empires and call to power 2 rather than galciv2 which is quiet sad :(.

Is there anything at all that can be done to fix this? because at this rate i can't see any point in atempting to play. no offence it'sa a great game but I keep getting let down with this flaw. I tried a second map which crashed after the 4th year.

It may not be a leak. It may be that the game simply uses too many resources, what with a virtually unlimited amount of ships and textures and such. On max-everything and late in the game, the game simply gets overwhelmed.

At this point in my game, I would be willing to turn down anything and everything to try to get it to a finish.

I guess what I'll try next is exactly that.  I have already zeroed the planet textrures and some display values.  I think that tonight I will zero-out just about everything else that I can find on the set-up page.

Absent that, can a Dev or Old Hand tell me what size galaxy I could finish a lonnng game in?  Or, is it some number of players I have to limit a game to?

I am confident that I can win this Suicidal game I'm on and it's frustrating as all hell!

As I have reported earlier, when I play in a gigantic universe with just AI opponents, later in the game when there are many, many ships, I lose my blue icons for new ships at the beginning of the turn.  I can't launch new ships unless I go from planet to planet and launch them one by one.  If I save, quit, and reload, I usually will be ok for several turns before the same thing happens.  I assume this is memory related.  BTW I am running 3gb on Vista.

Several people have reported the same thing.  I have never been able to get a dev to comment despite numerous tries both by email and reporting it on forums.

I went to the Options page and dialed back to zero all the choices for textures and other memory elements not related to actual game play.  Upon rebooting the game, it seemed to help.  At least, it got me through many more turns w/o more crashes.  I still have not completed that game, but I am hopeful.  It's not nearly as pretty as it was, but I can live with that.

This issue is on another thread. Can somebody at Stardock please give word on weather or not they are working the issue? Does this mean I paid fourty bucks for a pretty light show with no conclusion?

I'm starting to be annoyed.

I tried to make a kinda post letter about this a little subjects down but stardock doesnt seem interested in its game anymore, maybe we should spam post all over stardock and see if someone actually cares.

Tried playing an immense game. I've got crashes regularly. I save all of the time. Judging by task manager, the game crashes when it clears around maybe 2.2 GB of RAM.

Game works stably for me. Not sure about the launching issue.

Are you actually running 4Gb on an x86 system? That can cause stability problems.

Im running 8 GB on a 64x system so I doubt that is the issue here. :annoyed:
