Sins of a Solar Empire - Entrenchment Beta Information

Welcome to the beta test for Sins of a Solar Empire - Entrenchment!  This micro-expansion is jam packed with enough features to qualify as a full fledged expansion pack, so we know it'll keep everyone busy for quite awhile. ;)  That said, this is a beta - put simply this is going to be very buggy and somewhat unbalanced.

If you don't want to deal with bugs, balance issues or providing feedback to improve the game please wait for the final release!

The Entrenchment beta is available in English only!

Here are the highlights for Entrenchment:

  • Starbases:  Construct powerful bases within any gravity well to help fortify your empire and project your power across the stars.  Each race's base is unique and upgradable with a number of abilities via research.
  • Defense Tech Tree:  Improve your defenses with the new Defense tech tree. Here is where you'll learn how to build starbases and upgrade them, in addition to improving your existing defense technologies.
  • Upgraded Defense Structures:  Improve your defense turrets and hangar bays with new abilities and better firepower!
  • Mine Fields:  Each race can now build (with the appropriate tech) mine fields within their gravity wells (or those of others).  These powerful devices can lay waste to an incoming enemy fleet if positioned properly.
  • New/Updated Frigates/Cruisers: New and updated frigates and cruisers will give you the power to lay mines, establish starbases or bring them down with powerful attacks.
  • Improved AI:  The AI has been improved substantially to be more deadly than ever before and now uses fleet tactics better.
  • Improved Graphics:  New stellar backgrounds, particle fx, and textures make Sins look better than ever.
  • and much more.

To install Entrenchment:

  1. First, you will need the full version of Sins of a Solar Empire v1.12.  This update can be obtained via Impulse (http://www.impulsedriven.com).
  2. Once your pre-order is charged, you will see Entrenchment appear in Impulse under your My Games tab. Just click the Install button and Impulse will handle the rest.
    1. If you don't see Entrenchment appear after getting your order receipt via email from us, try Checking for Updates in Impulse (click the Stardock orb in the upper-left and select Check for Updates).
    2. If that doesn't work, you can manually register your Entrenchment serial number in Impulse. Click the blue ? in the upper right and select Register a Product.
    3. NOTE: Your order number is NOT your serial number.  Your charged pre-order receipt will clearly list your Serial Number.
  3. Once Entrenchment is installed, regular Sins will disappear from Impulse.  You will only be able to play online against other Entrenchment players during the beta.

Posting about Bugs:

Please check out Annatar's stickied thread about providing feedback to us about the beta:

Keep in mind that this version of Entrenchment is not finished. We're at the beginning of the beta process, not the end. ;)

Not yet for me.  I'm not sure if I put the same email down, would that affect anything? When it asked for an email to preorder I just gave them one. Not sure if it is the same as the one on Impulse.  I was logged onto Impulse obviously and I'm using the same PC...should still recognize it, correct?

Thanks,

Phalnax

P.S.: AHHH!!!! I can't wait!!

check email for the serial number

add serial number to your impulse account  if its not there

For the vast majority of people, the serial numbers should be added automatically to your accounts when the order is processed. Just refresh Impulse (F5) or blue orb > check for updates after you receive your new e-mail. The one you got way back when you preordered is just an order confirmation, not an order process ;)

Me i got and order number.

So um...anyone else missing d3dx9_36.dll? It downloads and installs fine, but can't find that file. Reinstalled twice...preordered through impulse and everything happened automatically. If I use the Sins exe, it loads regular Sin 1.12.

on XP/2000, install DirectX Redistributable (November 2008)

Always amazes me how many people who otherwise keep up on drivers forget to keep up on DX9 updates.

If that's on V, nae clue mate.

edit: I NINJA'D ANNATAR! *feels a great sense of accomplishment*

Odd. Do a google search for that dll, there are several sites that offer dll file downloads, that should be among them. Drop it in your install directory for Entrenchment and you should be ok.

Edit: I am beaten.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to get it installed until around 6:30 tonight when I get home from work...but rest assured...this could be an all-nighter type of night for me.

It'll take a little while to work through the preorder queue. Don't worry, they won't forget you :P

Lol i wonder is witch order it is doing it. Either that or impulse isnt very impulsive. X|

They have monkeys on typewriters sending out the serials :P But in all seriousness, everyone's waited this long, what's another hour? Take a deep breath, and shoot a pillow or something :D

Well I installed Entrenchment but it won't launch. Impulse shows Entrenchment as installed.

If I run the game from my old desktop shortcut it launches as the old 1.12 version.

If I run it from Impulse it tells me d3dx9_36.dll was not found.

My DirectX version is 9.0c.

Any suggestions?

Mass email? I didn't know credit card payments and paypal processes were run on emails... I certainly hope not!

Try that.

Or this (courtesy of Soor):

on XP/2000, install DirectX Redistributable (November 2008)

That's not working either...one dll missing leads to another...tried reinstalling dx....that also didn't work...

Turns out I already have d3dx9_36.dll in my Sins install directory and the one I downloaded was an older version anyway. Re-installing Entrenchment didn't help either.

Grr. Thanks for the tip anyway.

They're not.  Once your pre-order is processed, then an email will be sent telling you everything was good and then you can get on Impulse and start the fun.

Uuhhh, putting copies of system DLLs in an app's directory is a really, really bad idea, unless you take ALL of those DLLs.

Otherwise => DLL VERSION HELL, something the windows method of doing shared libraries is (in)famous for, and that always gets a laugh among the unix crowd.

That'd be great, but that's not the only thing missing...appriciate the help though guys. Thanks. I'll try reinstalling again.

Thanks guys. I updated DirectX and it helped but now I'm missing fmod.dll (which I also have in my Sins install directory).

edit: ^^^doh. looks like i'm not alone in this.^^^

I'm getting an error while starting trying to run it. It installed fine, but when it gives me an "Entry Point Not Found" error with "The procedure entry point _FSOUND_GetNumHWChannels@12 could not be located in the dynamic link libary fmod.dll."
