[Fix for]Tutorials, Campaigns buttons grayed out in DL,DA and maybe some crashes too

mostly fresh installs version 2.0

I made this thread, in the hopes to get it stickied and so that it's clearer based on recent findings. And also maybe kryo could transmit that info to stardock developpers

It seems a handful of problems are linked to a lacking registry setting since galciv2 Endless Universe 2.x was put online. The culprit is simply a missing language setting.

Symptoms:

-Tutorials, Campaigns buttons grayed out in Dread Lords and Dark Avatar

-it's also possible but not verified that some crashes are linked to this.

FIX:

Code: asp.net
  1. -Click on Start, Run, then type "regedit.exe" and click OK
  2. -on windows XP 32bits, Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Drengin.net\Galciv2
  3. -here you should find a String value named "Language" with "English" as Data
  4. -if it's blank fill it with "English"
  5. -if it doesn't exist, right click then select New, String Value and name it "Language"

Code: asp.net
  1. -on XP 64bits or vista 64bits, Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Stardock\Drengin.net\Galciv2

I'm not quite sure about vista 32 bits, but it should be similar to one of the above

A word of warning though, the registry holds almost all custom data about your current windows install, don't mess with this tool outside of what's written here if you don't know what you're doing.

Just found this thread.....

There isn't a Galciv2 key there.

I'll post the keys that are there when i have time.    Have to go to work..........

Why hasn't someone from Stardock gotten back ni touch with me?     I love these games,  but I'll think twice about buying another one after this.

Good find, guys. I've passed this on to Cari so she can look into why the game is not catching that (it should default to English if no langauge is set).

Harvesters,

I have responded to your support Ticket twice, last reply I told you the issue was being sent up to our Game Devs.

I also asked if you can start and play the games from;

C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\GalCiv2.exe
C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar\GC2DarkAvatar.exe

You didn't say if you can or not.

Yes you did ask that on 11-26-08 and I answered that same day that I could indeed start the games that way.   Then on 12-3-8 you sent a message saying that my problem was being sent to the devs...........then nothing.

Just today I recieved an email from the devs advising me to add the language/english regkeys.  And if that didn't work to try reinstalling.

I guess I'll go try adding/renaming regkeys in the hope that I'll find the right things to change/add.

I do not have the regkeys that are mentioned here.  Could someone please post the whole section of regkeys so that I can try reconstructing what I should have?

hum... I saw you have windows xp home from your posted debug.err

It seems strange that you have no registry keys at all, could be a wider problem as I see it ... Furthermore, I'm reluctant about posting a full reg file as a "fix" because it could for example: not be installed in the default location, or not exactly the same versions and it could mess with a lot of things

before we go that way could you search in your registry for "galciv2" or "stardock" (without the quotes of course)

it may give a few results depending on your system, the one we are interested about should be located in :

Code: asp.net
  1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE

and it could also be interesting to see if there's any results in

Code: asp.net
  1. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE

edit: just thought about something else, please make sure you're logged in with full administrator privileges, if that's not the case, you might want to try reinstalling the game with full administrator rights then recheck the existence of those registry keys (as a reminder for your system the reg keys should be : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Drengin.net\Galciv2 )

I did have everything out to Drengin.net there just isn't a GalCiv2 there. (it made no difference to add it and the language/english keys either)  The note from the dev said to also look for GalCiv2UL but that also isn't there.

I do realize that I wouldn't be able to just import someone elses reg keys I just needed them as a blueprint to use to reconstruct my own version.  I posted a request on another forum and someone was kind enough to send them to me.   It's all fixed now.   I'll give GalCiv another try right after I finish Fallout 3

I do have to say that it took to freaking long to fix this problem.  There was WAY to much time between responses from Stardock and in the end they didn't even fix it.  I spent most of the time wondering if they had just forgotten about me.  And then they put in the email not to send any more questions or suffer more delays (lol)  so I was stuck just wondering if it was being worked on or not.

If they had just asked a few questions it may have been fixed sooner.  Instead all I heard was a deafening silence.

I bought the game this weekend but just installed it today. Everytime that I tryed to start a new random map the game crashed with a generic windows error. After noticing that I couldn't play campaings or tutorials either I started looking for a solution and found this.

The key fixed all my problems, stardock should be looking into that bug immediately.

you know, it seems rather strange that you got no registry keys at all ... :S

Either way, I'm happy you got it fixed, as it wasn't clear what it was you wanted from my standpoint |-)

Kryo (a stardockian) forwarded the problem to cari (lead developer) as he said a little above. have fun with the game :sun:
