I wasn't expecting THAT!

I have one colleague from Archie school that I still hang out with after all these years.....but sadly he actually sees me as his resident 'expert' for all-things 'computer', even though he's used one longer [from ACAD 10 in Dos] up to the current Revit.

I got a phonecall the other day....he was in Crime Converters [Cash Converters is its 'real' name] looking at a Toshiba Laptop that he wanted to buy....[it'd be second hand, obviously].

Now, since I'm always online his idea was to get me to Google the model to see what it was 'like'...eg real retail price, specs, etc...which I did.

Anyway....he bought it....$750 was better than the retail $1299.

Yesterday he brought it over for his 'expert' to have a look at.  He booted it up and....

"What on earth", I exclaimed.  "It's got a dock and widgets and stuff....nothing like XP at all...."

I right-clicked on the Dock on the left of screen to work out WTF I was looking at and lo and behold  "Object Dock, by Stardock.corp".

You know, it was the VERY FIRST time I'd actually seen a computer with a Stardock Proggy on........that WASN'T mine....;)

I've only seen one other computer besides my own that was running a Stardock app.  It was ObjectDock and it was on a co-workers laptop.

I've lost count of the number of times I've been in Airport lounges around the world, sitting there, with my laptop and someone has glanced over my shoulder and seen all the cool stuff on my desktop and said "Wow! how do you make your computer look like that?" or "Is that the new Microsoft operating system?".............and I tell them it's all courtesy of the guys at Stardock and some fantastic artists like John, Danny and Treetog. When I was sitting in London Heathrow last year I even ended up with a group of intrigued youngsters all quizzing me on how things worked and I reckon I sold at least three Object Desktop packages on the spot !!!!!!!!! One day I'll ask Brad for some commission!!!

People use stardock software? I had no idea!!! ;p

My computer is the envy of all my friends... They're too cheap to buy something that is "visual only" (that's their interpretation, not mine). Some have asked me to install (with MY serial... How dare they...) on their system... I'd be happy to do it, but when I say I'll have to keep their computer (because I can only install on my own computers :p )  everyone has changed their mind this far... :)

We use MS MOM (now System Center Operations Manager 2007) to inventory the apps on PC in the domain and I check once in a while to see whose using what and I see more than a few WBs and ODs.  It always gives me a thrill.  :)

Crime Converters [Cash Converters is its 'real' name]
End of quote

I hate those bastards with a passion!  A few years ago I was doing it real tough after my 1st wife had left me to raise two kids on my own, and needed money urgently after she had cleaned my wallet of all cash prior to exiting, so went to Crime Converters with a top of the range Sony video camera as security for a small loan of just $175.00, a fraction of what the cam cost at the time to feed my kids, etc.

Anyhow, to cut a long story short, when I went in to redeem it the day before payment was due, only to discover the bastards had 'so-say' sold it a week earlier... and to rub salt into the wound, they took the $175.00 plus interest before telling me they (so-say) no longer had the item, then would not give the cash back when I argued they had no right to it after selling my video camera prior to the due date.  Arguing did no good, they got 3 strongarm thugs to remove me fron the store.

I never got my camera back (which by the way they had 'sold' to themselves) but I still had the last laugh.  I got some biker mates to do some investigating the cops couldn't/wouldn't do and came up with enough evidence to nail that particular franchise holder and others on charges of operating an interstate stolen property racket.  Yeah, my mates discovered 4 shipping containers on the Brisbane wharves full of goods stolen in Qld and heading for Victoria and NSW.  The mongrel bastard who ripped me off got 14 years... not to mention a severe beating from the cops when he tried to resist arrest.

Don't Mess With the Zohan... bollocks!  The Zohan is a pussy compared to the starkers. >:(

Not as much as me man, they ripped me off so badly, they gave me $20 for a $600 engagement ring I sold them, and said they were sorry they couldn't offer more, anyway, next thing, I see it being sold for $400!  .. it ended with security guards throwing me out :banhammer:  hehe, but I spent the day protesting outside :)

I've seen/heard of that situation with Crime Converters so many times... they are out and out rip off merchants and I'll never step foot inside one of the crime dens again.  Besides, when wanting to buy, if you shop around the discount stores you can quite often pick up items for cheaper than what they charge anyway.

Hehe, I can see it now... Tailsgirl marching up and down outside Crime Converters with her placard and shouting: "Burn the bra, burn the bra.... ooops, different protest. :-"

lol, hey you're right about stuff being cheaper elsewhere, but get this, they were selling this sega megadrive game a few years back, for $10 more than the actually game store was selling it for new wtf X|   so I started re-directing folks to the cheaper place hehe

Good on'ya Tailsgirl!  Now if you can't redirect the road past their place to someplace else, maybe you could plant some dope and stolen property there and redirect the cops there instead.

:-" :w00t:

If all else fails, superglue their doors shut. ;P

Oh well, that's when you remove the radio/CD player from his car, sneak it into their shop and ring the plaza manager to tell him Crime Converters has it.

O:) :-"

Hey, Tailsgirl, do you follow Penrith in the NRL? Got one of me old mates down there, Petero Civonoceva... great player, hey!

My Dad liked Manly :puke:

Don't like St George... first they got our Wendell Sailor, then our Wayne Bennet and our Michael Ennis.  As you can tell, I am a Brisbane Broncos supporter... and I'm NOT happy.  XO

But you're right, though, the NRL has messed things up and the great game of league has never been the same since... too many new rules and way too many stoppages.  As for the mergers, I too wish they had left things alone, it was much better when it was Balmain and Wests, St George and Illiwaarra... and the league was better for having the Nth Sydney Bears as well.

Actually, it was all that bloody Rupert Murdoch's fault, throwing a spanner in the works with his damned 'Super League'... the bastard.  I read the other week that Murdoch lives in the US now... well as far as I'm concerned they can bloody well keep him.

'Ere, it's just dawned on me, Murdoch might be the Puppeteer.  :S 8(|
