Gun capable of shooting ONE PLANET AWAY ONLY!

Hello all,

now for my main artillery gun (its a moving frigate to be precise), I need to be able to fire to the nearest planet ONLY and not to the entire solar system!! Furthermore, can I add constraints that gives a percentage of chance of it missing some of the ships inside that gravity well??

Just a few questions!

Once again, just send me in the right direction and Ill find a way!:D

Thanks!

You could make a map where all the planets are 1 jump away from each other. Then the gun can only fire to the adjacent planet.

DAMN!!!! well not too bad..just means youll need to get the vessel inside the grav well to fire (itll have MAXIMUM RANGE)! Might even make it more impressive...have a huge salvo from a wave of artillery ships :D

This is gonna be sweet!

sorry for saying this but I LOVE WW2!! from a military point of vue...

so I' trying to recreate that sense of strategy in a space age :) from my imagination it looks AWESOME!!! and from a game point of vue..well so far all the elements I tested in game work like a charm :)!!

You know you have healer ships..sniper capitals, etc. each good vs a specific unit!! Cant w8 to get it out..but they need models :( LOL

Just make it so it needs to be a capital ship, frigates wouldn't have the necessary space to house a weapon that large.

No no..its support ship (just like Recycler, Minelayer, Protector, Command vessel,etc..) so it deserves to stay in cruisers tab!

Don't worry it's not THAT big and it'll house damage worthy of it's ranks but nothing off the top!!

As a little insight itll have ENTIRE GRAV WELL to fire, slow missile speed and weak damage! Can only damage ships (maybe only frigates) but Ill see when I test it out..but itll fire like theirs no tomorrow!

Like modern day artillery..hes not their to necessarily damage but mostly to amke the enemy keep his head down and damage those pesky carriers in the back! LOL

then the chance to hit will b equally low? I've never been in combat where artillery strikes where it supposed 2.

Of course!!! I just gotta find the way to add percentage! It was part of the OP discussion with Annatar if my memory serves me right!

All part of the plan!

To which my response was "unpossible" because it sounded like you were shooting at all the ships in the grav well but only some needed to be missed, which yeah is not possible. :P For single-target, I suppose you could give the ships a passive ability that gives them a chance to hit penalty (the reverse of Akkan's buff), but it's still up in the air if regular ships are affected, the game files are inconclusive. There are hit/miss percentages in gameplay.constants, but they only apply to weapons shooting at fighters and bombers.

I seem to remember IC at one point did say that all weapons have inherent accuracy and not every shot is guaranteed to hit, so maybe it'll work. You can always set chance to hit to -1 (-100%) and see if some shots do no damage, I suppose :P

Slightly off topic,

could you then use the complete opposite buff that the Akkan has ie. -20% chance to hit, -10% range for all enemy targets within a range X?

Sure :P Still remains to be seen if the chance to hit debuff will have any effect on frigate targets and above, or be restricted to strike craft targets, though.

Actually Annatar, in Gameplay.constants you can play around with accuracy against frigate/capitals as well.  Under the "ChanceToHitTargetType" lines one of the entries is "CAPITALSHIP" which applies to both capital ships and frigates oddly enough.  Currently it is set at 1.000, for 100% accuracy, which mean the Akkan's Targeting Uplink is less useful than you think, as it only provides relatively small range buffs and the accuracy is only useful in asteroid belts.

However, if that accuracy was set to less than 100% for those weapons, then everyone would want the Akkan as it would give a definite edge in battles.

Also, having weapons with less than perfect accuracy is just good RTS design, especially in space where it is easy to miss targets.

Yeah, I saw the capitalship entry but I assumed that actually meant, well, capital ships.. not frigates clumped with them :P

Neat. So if someone wanted, they could make all ships have a chance to miss when shooting?  Would this put a greater burden on the pc though as it would have to calculate all shots % miss?

Since the value is there, chances are it's factoring it into the calculations anyway.

actually thats impossible i think... i tried it with my mobile cannons on my new race... you can just have it at maximum range and if you really want to have a long range battle.... just increase the planetary gravity radius....

My Mobile Cannon: Pearl Core(anti shield), Diamond Core(Anti hull).... really spanks asses on long range battle

Well that's a bonus. I might have to incorporate this into my mod.

EDIT*

I mean the % miss/hit

How about if, instead of firing, the ship has a long-cooldown power that creates a ship(Named "Missile") that expires when the cooldown ends? The "Missile" goes through a warp point and then self-destructs with certain effects.

There's no way to enforce a 1-jump limit for that, though. It'd be relying on the player to be nice and push the auto-destruct after the jump ;)

LOL!!!! And who has time for that in a very prolonmged battle :D

Hey you got your Annatar bell to work! HAHAH

That ship missile idea is still pretty cool.

Did you ring it? :P Been a busier day at work than usual, I'm still here.. normally home by now :(
