Brad's November Impulse wish list...

Impulse continues to progress.  Here I'm going to put together my wish list for changes in Impulse. Feel free to add your own.

#1 Impulse is too big.

image

Impulse is currently 846x708 minimum in screen size.

Instead, it should be 640x480.

image

If people want to resize it larger, that's fine.

#2 Fast load should be OFF by default.

#3 Load time needs to be incredibly fast.

#4 The dock should be a free option, it shouldn't be bundled.

#5 Fewer tabs when possible

image

#6 Less space when possible

image

#7 Make the "Store" have more cool free stuff

image
Note: I'm not sold on calling it "store" as it implies that people have to buy everything when the long-term goal is to have most of the content on it be free.

How about "Goodies" instead of store or have a naming contest  ;)

How many people have sreens that small now a days?

Afaik, they don't make screens smaller than 1440x990 anymore. So the screen size shouldn't be a problem imo.

And there's nothing wrong with the dock being avaliable, you don't even have to turn it on if you don't want to.

I must not want much,  :O

Impulse looks fine to me, but having said that, what ever you thing it needs is great with me.

I couldn't be happier in the way you and your staff keep things updated and fresh, but then I'm old and have bad eyesight.   \o/    \o/    ;P

Store =StardockShop?

or GetImpulsive

or Impulsive Software

or GetMore Store.

or StarSoft

  As for the other things, they all make perfectly good sense.I use a 17"CRT so a smaller size would be welcome.

Although I agree with most of what you said, I dont think the size is an issue, other than that all your suggestions make damn fine sense.........Is the skinning of Impulse a thing we do not talk about anymore, is it old hat, cos I definitely would like to see that option, but if it has been kicked to death already, sorry I brought it up.....ok thats me...Oh and thank you to all the wincustomise and stardock people that make all of this possible...thank you

Except that the dock is on by default-or at least was when I installed Impulse, and I've seen several pseudo-complaints about it since, so my guess is it hasn't changed.

To my knowledge, 1024x768 screens are still being made, or at the very least are still buyable.  There's also the fact that some people, like my father for instance, have visual problems and tend to run at a lower resolution than is recommended/their hardware actually supports, although this is less relevant on a CRT or even a newer LCD.  For the record, he runs his system at 800x600, and if it supported 640x480, he'd probably run it at that.  (Note: It will run it at 640x480 in safe mode, and either 16 or 256 colors to boot-I forget-but it's not technically a supported mode and therefore not selectable).

I've tried to tell him he can scale up the size of everything when he goes to a higher resolution, but he hasn't paid much attention.

Smaller is better.

Fast load should be off by default.

I fully agree on the load time-ideally I wouldn't wait any longer than I waited with SDC, but I understand that may be difficult to accomplish.

Turning the dock off by default should be more than sufficient, but placing it as a free download works too.

Doesn't bother me one way or the other, but it'd be nice to only have 2-4 tabs "active".

Don't know what you mean by less space-less screen space?  Sounds good.  Less hard drive space?  Should be a non-issue, but is generally a good thing.  (Note: I can't see the screenshot because Stardock's network of sites is inaccessible to me at the moment through my ISP, so I'm having to use TOR, which has really really shitty thoroughput.)

Like more direct installable demos.  SDC had like 500 (okay, not really) demos on it, and my brain remembers the vast majority of them as direct install (rather than downloading an installer), although that doesn't appear to be the case.  I was unable to get the Sins demo installer to work for some strange reason that Annatar, Kitkun, later Yarlen, and myself were not able to track down-but Yarlen directed me to where Impulse has an option to show direct downloadable demos, which worked.  Which incidentally I feel that hides fairly well, although I can understand it not being in the default on position.

Although, yes, more completely free stuff is good too-in fact, great.  I'm not sure exactly what the idea behind this is at present though, other than the MyColors thing.

And just as a last thing, the blue orb needs to have a big fat CLICK ME when people hover over it, or something.  The most commonly asked question about Impulse has to be "how do I...?" to which the answer is "click the blue orb".  But this is something that's been said 5 billion times so hopefully it makes it in sooner or later.

Your the Boss "Make it so".

As for the dock, make the size adjustable. I use it on my laptop and making it smaller would be nice.

How 'bout one of these:

Impulse Warehouse

My wishlist:

  1. To be able to see my games in details view settings (its what I normally use for my file folders).
  2. To be able to que task for impulse. I've had the need to reinstall all my games recently (replacing my C: and reinstalling windows on it) and I found the task of reinstalling multiple games quite time consuming when you have to manually tell them to install, where to install, make an archive of them, and yes to install desktop icons. To be able to que these details, and then be able to go out to watch a movie or something would be a real time saver.
  3. To be able to see the progress of all tasks. Sometimes its difficult to tell if Impulse is doing anything. Having something to inform us of what Impulse is doing when installing stuff, what is yet to be done, and how long it will take would make it easier to decide if I should stick around, or go to that movie. Plus it would save me time trying to kill its process whenever it seems to be unresponsive.

P.S. I heard nasty a rumour recently. Could you sheed some light on this?

Does Impulse allow companies to have DRM software to be installed along with the games they offer? I heard some rumours that it would be possible for companies to do so.

If this is true, could we get a DRM watcher for all games and programs? I would like to get a warning if we can expect to get something like securom installed with our purchases and downloads. Removing securom (EA version) from my computer is not what I call a fun afternoon.

I really like the Impulse dock and use it despite its quirks & limitations.  Here's my wishlist for the dock:

  • A small icon option.  As it is, many icons look bad because they don't size up well.
  • A 'no text' or 'icon only' option that preserves tab names in the Impulse window (to avoid having to resort to a 'space' for the name & end up with 'unnamed' tabs in Impulse).  The dock should also auto-size (get smaller) when this option is selected.
  • An option to attach the dock to the sides or top of the screen.
  • An option to add icons to the default icon palette.

Not really a 'wish', but some icons won't paste into the dock or subdocks for some reason, even if I create a desktop shortcut and try to paste that - I end up with an empty button which functions normally but is blank.

As for Impulse itself, yes a smaller, sizable window would be welcome.

How about "Marketplace", "Emporium" or "Treasure Chest".

Here are some of my thoughts (mostly related to the "Store"):

  • Compressed view (ljust small icon and name on one line) - so you a can see more items
  • Fill the space that is available better (i.e. auto-fill the content to the window size)
  • Hide things you already have from the "Store"
  • Wish list in the "Store"
  • Web/image links from Impulse should stay in Impulse and not open another browser (particularly things like software image previews)

I have some things that bug me about Impulse...

1- It's clunky. At times going very quickly, at others totally bogged down, especially when updating a game. It's almost like it has a split personality. Watching it struggle through an update that I could download direct in a quarter of the time and install on my end in a minute makes me feel like years have gone by. I come out of my room asking the wife if they've finally fed everyone or if world peace has been achieved...

2- It's bloated. Or at least it feels bloated. My firewall goes spastic with popups about all the places Impulse wants to stick it's fingers. I really don't like that. To be perfectly honest, I don't want you on my system. I don't mind if you keep to your self and do your thing, but the second you start bloating all over the place and tying into other things, I want you gone. Maybe I'm just paranoid. Maybe I just want a simple update for my game. Maybe I don't want a full fledged flagship of Marketing "goodness". I certainly don't want the forums and all of that in there. I have a browser for that, that works 1000 times better than Impulse. So now I have three browsers on my HD? Did I ask for another? Yet in order to get game updates I have to install yours. I'd rather not. I like my browser, thankyou.

3- Getting things I didn't want or expect in the software. The dock is a perfect example. I didn't ask for a dock. I don't want a dock. Yet now I have a dock. "You can turn it off..." they say. But it's there. It cost me time to wait for it to download and install. I had to stop the world and figure it out. Unexpected, as there was no mention of it, it just "appeared". It takes up my disc space. Being a part of Impulse, even though it's a part I don't use. I then had to spend time to turn it off, and had to deal with my firewall's tantrum when it wanted to load again. Maybe your time is free and useless. Mine isn't. I'm sure some one loves it as much as I dislike it, and that's wonderful, but my time is gone and I can't get it back because nobody bothered to ask me what I wanted on MY computer... Someone made an assumtion that I would be OK with it. They were wrong.

4- I hate the colors. Impulse is just plain butt ugly, and I have yet to get it to allow me to change it. I must be odd, because I could tolerate the green... But this new color scheme hurts my eyes to look at it. I spend as little time as possible in it as I can. If your hope is for me to "browse" and "use" Impulse, Forcing me to have to look at it like it is is definitely not going to accomplish that.

I tolerate Impulse because it's what you use. I liked the old stardock central, BTW. It was unobtrusive, small, relatively quick. I know here in America the slogan is "bigger better faster more"... But quite frankly, you're definition of more and mine are two entirely different things.

(EDIT) I sound mean and angry in here... but I'm not. I should put a smiley in here just to show It's OK... I just have things how I like them, and Impulse tries way to hard to change that... :|

The new smiley's are cool too, BTW.

My wish would be the .NET dependency removed. That'll make it start faster, and less intrusive for the user his computer.

Note: I'm not sold on calling it "store" as it implies that people have to buy everything when the long-term goal is to have most of the content on it be free.

Some of the extra content might include featured skins for WB, some Stardock created (or user) widgets???

Hmmm...Impulse...Impulse Reactor...Store...Core....

The Reactor Core

Yup..i like it...:P

Please get rid of the cruddy orange scheme as the default. :X

My wishes:

1. Improve the preference icon from the glowing blue orb to something that implies preferences can be made there.  Too many posts are resolved with "click the blue orb" because people don't find it intuitive.

2.  Include a crash reporting tool- this will help developers trouble-shoot crashes for Impulse.  And allow users to submit their computer's information along with the crash, so they can tell support "check out crash number XXXXX", which will include system information, networking, etc.  Along those lines, a really good diagnostic tool would be helpful so support doesn't need to have users run a lot of different tools (even if it just references built-in Windows software but wraps it all up together).

3.  Impulse's current layout won't scale well as more and more content gets added (maybe that's an idea for Store- call it Content?).  In reality, Impulse is a download center like Download.com and the like.  This means Impulse needs some of the features they have there:

a. User ratings and comments.  If Impulse is meant to create a Community (as the tab implies), user reviews and ratings will help.  Plus, if I respect a particular user and see they recommend a certain game, I'll be inclined to purchase it, whereas right now I have to go to review sites for that info (which isn't always the best choice).

b.  Include information like Total Downloads, Highest Rated, etc. and allow games to be sorted on this.

c.  System Requirements as a filter might be useful.  For example, since a LOT of games in Impulse can run on old hardware, this could really be a useful filter for people with older computers.

I really like your suggestions, Brad.  Hope mine are useful for you, too.  Keep up the good work!

You ask me it works fine leave it alone! I like it as it is...

I've never really had a problem with it and oh well if you make it better that can't be doing too much. But I like it no matter what you do. Just keep up the good work there Brad. We do like all the good things that have been done here in the last year and I know you got bigger and better plans. Keep them coming!!!

With the staff you have now and all the hard work you and those people do. It is well worth it being a member and buying as much of the really good stuff this site has to offer. I like it and I'm thinking of getting another 2 years on everything here again soon! Got to stay ahead of the game and keep things going!!!

My firewall goes spastic with popups about all the places Impulse wants to stick it's fingers.

Mine too, and that's currently my #1 concern. I'm especially not happy with background 3rd-party traffic. (One of the reasons I still prefer Opera to other browsers is that it is easy to block all content from sites like doubleclick.net and offermatica.com.) If the amazing number of pings were all clearly for Stardock sites, I would not be as concerned. But it would still be very annoying.

On the minor side of things, I don't think something as important as options should be hidden behind a blue orb. The UI should include a clean text-labeled path to all important functions, preferably with keyboard accelerators.

I like many of the suggestions already posted. No problems here with the color scheme though. But maybe an option to change it if desired? One tihng I'd like to see is a larger store window. I find it annoying to have as much space as I do on my screen yet I can only see five items at a time in the small store window. (if it can be resized, I've not seen how).

Oh, and fix the crashing issue when clicking on anything in the store.
