Brad's November Impulse wish list...

Brad's November Impulse wish list...

Impulse continues to progress.  Here I'm going to put together my wish list for changes in Impulse. Feel free to add your own.

#1 Impulse is too big.

image

Impulse is currently 846x708 minimum in screen size.

Instead, it should be 640x480.

image

If people want to resize it larger, that's fine.

#2 Fast load should be OFF by default.

#3 Load time needs to be incredibly fast.

#4 The dock should be a free option, it shouldn't be bundled.

#5 Fewer tabs when possible

image

#6 Less space when possible

image

#7 Make the "Store" have more cool free stuff

image
Note: I'm not sold on calling it "store" as it implies that people have to buy everything when the long-term goal is to have most of the content on it be free.

Instead of "Store"....Downloadable Goodies?

Yes it needs to load faster.

Some of the extra content might include featured skins for WB, some Stardock created (or user) widgets???

Hmmm...Impulse...Impulse Reactor...Store...Core....

The Reactor Core

Yup..i like it...

Yup....that works well for me...but then, I am a geek!

I think it would help if it had an option to switch how we view the programs. In explorer, there's a option to switch views like details, tiles, thumbs, etc. A button like that would be nice.

My recommendation would be not to worry about the 640x480 res.   Your program doesn't need to run in "safe mode" which is the only place people run in gimped uber low resolutions anymore.  I'd venture to say that nearly 100% of your customers aren't utter noobs. just by the nature of your entire product line.  :)

Oh and I'd like to remove the extraneous tabs like Store etc.  I'm only looking for updates, pure and simple, from Impulse.  The rest is serviced quite well from your well maintained web sites.  Maybe keep it at install for the noobs, but I've like the option to remove them with a click of a box, etc.

1. Improve the preference icon from the glowing blue orb to something that implies preferences can be made there. Too many posts are resolved with "click the blue orb" because people don't find it intuitive.

Good pick Lord Reliant.

With that blue orb, Impulse feels too much like microsoft office 2007. I hate those ribbons, or whatever they are called. I haven't found a way to revert back to a classic view or user interface. They didn't even consider that some of us would prefert to use the classic stuff.

Give us back our menu bar with the "File Edit View Tools Help" and other entries for us to use.

Making it fit in 640x480 would be good for people who like to tile two windows across their monitor. That's not me - I like everything maximized - but I know a few people who do work like that. Anyway, it's a noble goal.

The biggest problem for me with Impulse at the moment: exchange rates.  The pound has dropped heavily against the dollar, and that means that a normal full-priced game on Impulse (or Steam) is now £10 more expensive than ordering it from Amazon.

If I expand Impulse, the store catalogue doesn't expand with it.  This is a shame, because with only 5 items per page, it could really do with being bigger.  Actually, I personally would prefer a scrolling list than pages.

Also, yeah, I agree with the person who mentioned they don't get why you have all the news/forums stuff in there. Why would we use Impulse for this over a web browser?

don't think something as important as options should be hidden behind a blue orb.

Or at least label the orb - Options.

How about calling the "store" the 'Galleria'. It seems the most fitting for the envisioned features.

On a side note when I think of the word impulse I think of this:

Everytime I see the bolt I think Daemon Tools.

It would also been cool to have that as a user-defined space where they could choose from a list of "drop-ins" like an RSS feed, online friends, etc.

How about ........Skinens 'N Things

You could just call it Downloads...

Anyways, why is this called a wish list? Frogboy :frogboy: , you're the president of Stardock... if it doesn't happen SHOOT ZEM WITH A LUGAR IN ZE HEAD *cough* I mean threaten to fire zem *cough* THEM!

Impulse is currently 846x708 minimum in screen size.

Instead, it should be 640x480.

Take a look into something collapsable, like how Microsoft's ribbon works. Be careful not to step on any patents, though.

Fewer tabs when possible

Yeah - that non-deletable "My Office" tab that can't be hidden? Really, really annoying. I frankly don't see the point of making it a non-deletable tab, either.

Making it fit in 640x480 would be good for people who like to tile two windows across their monitor.

I generally have a few windows floating around with the primary task maximized.

Lemme put it this way: I run at 1600x1200, and when impulse is maximized, nearly all of my tabs are mostly empty space. I don't like an application filling the screen if it's going to be mostly empty space.

On the minor side of things, I don't think something as important as options should be hidden behind a blue orb.

They could do what Office does, and highlight it until the first time the user clicks it.

I hate those ribbons, or whatever they are called.

The whole thing is called the ribbon, and I happen to like it :). After the initial learning cure, it's actually a pretty good interface IMHO.

They didn't even consider that some of us would prefert to use the classic stuff.

Yeah, I know switching is difficult, and I know it's difficult to learn new stuff - but I really think this is a pretty good and serious attempt to make Office better.

The old interface didn't really work. Apparently Microsoft was getting a lot of tech support calls about "suggestions" suggesting features that already existed in Office, but were piled deep inside menus, dialog boxes, tabs in dialog boxes, etc. Even seasoned Office users could be confused if they wanted to go off the beaten path so to speak and use features they hadn't used before. The new users were completely confused.

Quite frankly, Office had gotten to the point where only power users could use it effectively. People who were new to office or didn't want to deal with all of the complexities of customizing it were not able to use it effectively at all.

So they've redone Ofiice so that the features are easier to find - most of them are in the ribbon, and many of them are in context sensitive places. All of them are in the customize part of the options dialog. You don't need to go hunting for a command you need.

I think it's a big step forward for Microsoft's core audience. The power users don't like it as much because it's not quite as flexible as Office 2003 (yet), but I think that it's a big step forward as a good starting point for future versions of word.

I hate the colors. Impulse is just plain butt ugly, and I have yet to get it to allow me to change it. I must be odd, because I could tolerate the green... But this new color scheme hurts my eyes to look at it. I spend as little time as possible in it as I can.

I would agree with this - I dunno why Stardock decided to go so dark with the color theme. Not to mention they combined it with a bright orange - and combining very low brightness and very high brightness for the background is a big contrast killer, as anybody who has had to sit through a poorly created PowerPoint presentation knows.

I would say definitely look a bit into color theory and use the color wheel to plan the theme for the next Impulse skin.

. . . but it's okay if you don't go with light blue. Too many people are going with light blue. Yes, I understand it's a nice, relaxing, cool color, but my screen is starting to become a bit boring with everything moving towards light blue themes.

I would also like more skin choices for Impulse - and oh, yeah, allow more of it to be skinned using WindowsBlinds. If I want to use my own custom skin for it, why not? I don't see the harm in letting WindowsBlinds take over the skinning if the user is using a custom skin.

For the dock, I'd just like it if the damned thing would register my clicks 100% of the time. I love it otherwise, but occasionally it refuses to register the clicks until I click off on the desktop or an application first, which defeats the point of the dock in the first place.

Maybe the 'Store' button should read 'Store + Freeware' or alternate back and forth between saying 'Store' and 'Freeware'.  That way the user realises that there is free stuff in the Store, which is the idea.

One of the features on my own wish-list for ages now is a streamlined, slimmed-down application view.  Instead of showing huge tiled icons and massive text, just a bullet-list almost of applications/games sorted by category.  I know I'm an edge case with hundreds of applications on my account, but even just with Object Desktop, it can be hard to find apps quickly.

Each line would have a very tiny icon (if one at all), the name, current state (installed, updating, pdate available etc).  Plus space for a progress bar if I'm downloading.

Ideally, I'd be able to sort by any of those columns too.  They'd be sorted by categories (i.e. Object Desktop vs MyColors) and I'd be able to collapse/expand the category tree.  I'd do this with games and their default genres too.

For my own use, Impulse is a tool to me.  It's there to manage/update/install/launch my purchased software and games. While big shiny icons may be awesome for users with a dozen or so apps & games in the tool, for me I need it to be more utilitarian.  So for this I'd like to see, at the time of install, an option for the user to pick between "Regular" and "Power User" mode.  Power User mode would be a lot thinner, with much of the glass, transparencies and other fancy bits toned down, so the focus is more on the apps and less on the app itself.

Me likey Impulse mini! +1

I have to agree with Zoomba.

I would also like to see customer review & user stats embedded in the info panel if they are to keep the large space they have now.

Impulse Mini almost feels like it'd be a DX gadget that ties into Impulse.  I'd be all over that!

My wish list for impulse is to not be forced to use it in order to update my game.... since sins is the only thing I really use it for, its way, way to clunky for just one game. I'm sure that once more content is available on it it won't be as bad... but for now, I'd really like a shtml login page that I can use to download my patches >_<

A launcher/updater gadget would be great. Finally, a use for gadgets beyond the usual weather, system monitor, novelty clock.

I like applications that can minimize to a mini-application which can give you the basic information, much of the kind that Zoomba mentioned.

Well, I must be an edge case as well =).

As long as you don't follow the Start Menu's convention of grouping by company name.

That drives me crazy. Even Stardock puts Impulse in a "Stardock" folder.

"All Programs" is simply the worst part of the "Start" menu. In every version of Windows with the Start menu so far, I hate how it's grouped by company name.

My only complaint about the dock is that it can't be moved, so it gets in the way of the task bar.

Also it Impulse bugs me because it overrides my task bar setting of 'always on top'.

While I'm not noticing the same thing, I do notice a taskbar issue.  I hadn't remembered to mention it, as I turned the dock off, but the dock does not work well with an autohide taskbar.  Basically, part of it appears underneath my taskbar, if I'm that far down the screen.  All of it should appear right above (vertically-not overlay) the taskbar, IMHO.  I'm aware there may not be an easy fix for this, though, as it appears the dock's vertical position is set before the taskbar comes up from autohide status.

Now having toggled the autohide option on the dock (and even after changing it back), I am indeed seeing the above behavior that Onikazi mentions.  Both of these issues would seem to be solved by simply moving the dock up such that it is always (right) above the taskbar, but again, particularly with an autohide taskbar, I'm not sure how simple that is.
