Court: No, Wikipedia Doesn't Count As Evidence.

Ah, Wikipedia. Savior of internet debaters and bane of those who try to set themselves in a positive light against the connected masses. And now, apparently, the Department of Homeland Security is relying on it to reinforce their own legal arguments. Or maybe not.

It seems that the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals had to tell the DHS and the Board of Immigration Appeals that Wikipedia is no excuse for evidence to use in their proceedings. In this particular case, an Ethiopian woman had entered with false papers, seeking asylum. The DHS and Immigration dutifully looked up her real papers from back home on Wikipedia and decided (based on the wiki article about the documents she was using) that they weren't good enough proof of identity. [more]

You'd think that it should be common sense--Wikipedia is great for learning about stuff in general when you're bored, but given that there's no requirement of actual knowledge in order to edit entries there, it's pretty commonly agreed that it shouldn't be used for anything where documentation and proof are important.

But with the government and anything internet-related, it seems more often than not that sense is anything but common... ;)

just a personal observation: there are a lot of arrogant little dumb-asses in the world.

btw, isn't "HNIC' a racist remark?

/me googled...got 'Hockey Night In Canada' ...;)

The Urban Dictionary puts it differently and probably 'should' be avoided.... particularly if you're hangin' with the US Basketball team or similar...;)

i'm about as far from being a racist as you can possibly be. a childhood friend (who is black) and i run a local organization together. it is he who uses the term "HNIC" to describe himself at times. if he hadn't used it, i never wouldve known what it meant. and i HIGHLY doubt you were thinking 'numbnuts' when you made your post earlier.

and what makes you think i was referring to you? if you think you are part of the group i was referring to, if the shoe fits .............

Wanna hanky, starkers?

Yeah Actually... I copped a bit spatter when you gave me a spray, so yeah, a hanky would come in handy about now.  ;P

Anyhow, no hard feelings... I'm pretty thick skinned and didn't take it seriously.  I did, however politely ask the question regarding toning it down as some of us are not so thick skinned, due to depression, etc, and do not cope too well to personal attacks.  It was my hope that you would consider these people and refrain, which I sincerely hope you will.

Peace.  :)

just when I thought the fire was going out a wizop throws gasoline onto it.

I missed the HNIC comment, was it deleted? However, if she was referring to the current administration then "numbnuts" would be the appropriate connotation.:-"

That says far more about him than it does me. What was your point again?

gag, argh, damn. I have to agree with lil-whip on this one. the use of any racist term by anyone shows disrespect. Just because a black person uses the term doesn't make it acceptable. If it was acceptable then anyone could use it, right???

wimpy, i tend to agree with you on that. that's why i've asked him quite a few times to not use that term. he hasn't used it in probably 3 years now. as for the HNIC comment by little-whip, i still refuse to believe she meant it as ANYTHING other than a racist remark.

also, i am not a wizop. i resigned quite a while ago. that tag should not be there. in addition, i said "a personal observation", meaning it was me speaking as a site user and not as a site representative.

i've read this thread since its inception and kept my mouth shut until the "HNIC' comment. that was the last straw.

HNIC, pinko, ................want me to list other deragotory terms she's used?

want me to list other deragotory terms she's used?

nope, thanks, already heard them more than enough. I guess I was kind of hoping that the tone would die down but I guess that might be hoping for to much???

I think Zu has a repository for such items, well guarding such bombs as my last attempt at a wallpaper, zebra striped pants, etc..
That's not nice, HG. Poor Zu's been copping a bit of flak from all corners just lately... and now you're proposing the Doc hinder his ability to sit down.

Uncle!  I cant take on the 2 of you.  Go take out Ric Flair and The Rock!

little-whip, i'll be blunt. the meaning of "HNIC" and "pinko" are commonly known. anyone reading your comments know exactly what you meant.

what are you thinking now? you're thinking you're smarter and better than anyone else in this forum. you're not, though.

blogging super-hero? not hardly. 1: this is a forum, not a blog. if you have a blog, i guarantee i won't read it. i despise people like you. 2: i haven't a cape or mask.

what i really want to call you, i can't here.

i have a fat 0, huh? could that be because i never visit JU? it seems you have a big, fat 0 on WC. maybe you don't visit WC.

i've come to the conclussion you're not worth my time. you're arrogant, ignorant, biased, racist, and condescending. i don't dislike many JU bloggers, just you. it seems you're the one who holds a disdain towards users of other sites, not me.

as for the people you mentioned.......never heard of them.

i won't be replying here again. you're not worth the energy spent typing.
