The end of Stargate: Atlantis

The end of Stargate: Atlantis

So, perhaps not too surprisingly, SciFi is cancelling Atlantis as a series. They plan to continue it a bit on the direct-to-DVD features, sort of like SG1 has been doing. But, apparently, the current Atlantis season is going to be the last for the TV show. Only lasted 5 :(

Sci-fi channel is a b-movie pile of poo. Totally agree. There is awesome sci-fi books but no decent movies or shows. Sci-fi needs to hook up with writers like Harry Turtledove,John Ringo, and David Weber. Or hell anyone with some talent cause they are a giant sucking black hole of non sci-fi atm.

Awe shit they canceled good shows like SG-1 and now SGA. Sci-fi is crap now for doing this. I mean who watches doctor who ??

I sure dont. I have always thought and always will think that Doctor Who is a pile of crap. I really hate humour in Sci-Fi. I can accept tiny bits of humor like in Stargate etc, but not when the actual genre is Sci-Fi-Humour.

And who the hell cares about what other new shows they are bringing, like Sanctuary.
Who cares if it will be completely awesome. They will just cancel it when we have gotten settled in and started to love it, like EVERY OTHER GOD DAMN SCI-FI SHOW.

Fuck em. Why dont they do reality-shows too? They want the $$ at all cost, even if its at the cost of the name of their network.
Heck, if the reason they are cancelling SG-1 and Atlantis because it costs too much with the damn visual effects, why not just cut the budget a bit? Seriously, would any of you care if the visual effects quality in Atlantis went down to Season 1 quality?
I sure wouldnt, and i wouldnt even notice!

Hell they even already got rid of half the original crew in SG-1, that gotta be big money sinks gone when there is just a new n00b-actor to pay instead?
Cuz dont tell me Cameron Mitchell got the same salary as O'Neil. No fucking way :)

I do too. They keep showing the same types of movies ie; dinosaurs, dragons, stupid butcher movies, zombies, insects and snakes, killer fish or crocs, asteroids and bad weather. My biggest complaint is the fantasy or psychic movies. This is SciFi; show scifi for crying out loud! The other thing is the canceling of shows without regard to the fans feelings. One moment it's on and the next, puff! Gone...

My main complaint is why is wrestling on scifi.

A big WTF, let the people who own Scifi screw it up until they have no fans.

how can you hate Sci-fi,

Easy; I hate the channel, but not the good stuff (Doctor Who, Stargate, Farscape, etc etc) that it shows (showed).

I have always thought and always will think that Doctor Who is a pile of crap.

Alright, calm down folks, this wasn't all Sci-Fi's fault, the people making the show wanted to close it down so they could move on to a third StarGate series, StarGate Universe.  They didn't want to make two series at once and have been waiting for Atlantis to finish up so they could move on.  This is all part of their plan.

I don't like their sence of "a plan"...

But, it's still mostely Sci-Fi's fault cause even now, MGM's still making direct-to-DVD movies of both SG-1 and Atlantis (although, they seem rushed).

Prove it.  I don't believe that the writers/producers/directors chose to end Atlantis.  I think Sci-Fi ended it because the ratings have dropped in the last couple years and haven't gone back up.  Atlantis started out with a 2.0 in the Nielson ratings, now its lucky to get 1.2

Eureka, that steaming pile of bantha fodder, regularly gets a 2.0 and higher.

Eureka is pretty good, and sometimes very funny. Sanctuary looks like it may be pretty good, but, that is a 'wait and see' thing. I can wait for Stargate Universe, although I would prefer that they would get Atlantis fully functional with 3 ZPMs in parallel.

I agree that most of the programming is a septic tank special.

I see the reasoning behind cancelling SG1, it was costing more than it was bringing in and the whole dynamic had changed due to the cast changes.  Maybe they should have done what they were originaly thinking and ended it with season 8, then starting it again as Stargate : Command.

Atlantis has been a pile of rubbish since it started, so the fact it lasted this long has surprised me. Every time they came up with a decent idea that would have been a great recurring theme or ongoing story, it lasted a single episode with a major cop out ending.

As for the new spin off, Why didn't they call it Stargate : Voyager, and have done with it.

That all comes across as overly negative, but it's not meant to, i'm just sick of series that have an amazing amount of potential being treated like jokes.

No argument with that one bit.

I'm hoping we're just seeing the death throes of the mega-audience as the overall goal of a show. It's kind of a hangover from the days of broadcasting as the dominant distribution system. I'd trade a bit of production value (show budget) for greater attention to quality and a focus on a smaller, more interested audience.

Basically, I'd like to see the "lowest common denominator" raised. Let folks who think shots fired per hour is a major criterion have their shows and do some SF for the others of us who want to *think* about big ideas. Right now, too many SF shows try too hard to please the action audience at the expense of doing really good, long story arcs.
