The end of Stargate: Atlantis

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/38015

So, perhaps not too surprisingly, SciFi is cancelling Atlantis as a series. They plan to continue it a bit on the direct-to-DVD features, sort of like SG1 has been doing. But, apparently, the current Atlantis season is going to be the last for the TV show. Only lasted 5 :(

I do too. They keep showing the same types of movies ie; dinosaurs, dragons, stupid butcher movies, zombies, insects and snakes, killer fish or crocs, asteroids and bad weather. My biggest complaint is the fantasy or psychic movies.
This is SciFi; show scifi for crying out loud!
The other thing is the canceling of shows without regard to the fans feelings.
One moment it's on and the next, puff! Gone...

The folks who control cable networks have no respect for the notion of genre, so it's hardly worth starting a good argument about whether the Sci-Fi Channel should have been running the Dresden Files. But I can't resist a small try ;-)

In defense of a schedule where not everyone will like every show: My local library puts all the SF (speculative fiction) stuff in the same section, but tags things heavy on ray guns and computers with a little red "atomic rocket" sticker and puts a blue unicorn head sticker on stuff that's likely too magical for readers like ACole47.

That said, at base I could hardly agree more that the Sci-Fi channel needs to work much harder to live up to its name. The cheap horror makes it useless for me on Saturdays, and for the life of me I cannot figure out how ECW got on the schedule. I mean I know pro wrestling is fiction, but what's to speculate about? Whether some goofball will put lights in his leotard next time?

p.s. The media corps' genre problems are worse than just this one channel. If you pay attention to the scheduling on the genre-named suite of Encore channels, you'll eventually see many, many films appearing on all or most of the channels. One month, a flick is a Mystery, several months later it's a Romance, still later it's a Drama, and so forth. Video stores also often litter their "SF" section with stuff like Freddy vs. Jason, etc.

SciFi Channel has this habit of showing a bunch of one series on one day, and they may as well rename themselves the Horror Channel.

I can look at the first movie listed for Saturday or Sunday, and see what the entire day is going to be about.

Ghost Hunters FTW!

SG-1 and now Atlantis? Do they think there is no fanbase or what!?!? The least they could do is rename themselves "The Idiotic Horror Channel." Personally, I think this would go over a lot better than lying to our faces, disreguarding our every protest, and then giving us crappy shows! Curse you Sci-Fi!!!!!!!!

Edit: I know most of this was already said, but it's worth repeating.

Okay here goes GW Swicord...

If the winner is fixed before the event but nobody in the audience knows the result can it still be considered fixed? If yes... then where does the buck stop regards the fixing?

Is it the audience themselves (popularity, merchandise)? The producers or the marketing agents for reacting to such data? Was the character of Buc Baculum simply irresistable in terms of market potential, that the buck could only stop at the feet of Johnny Supermoron for having the charisma and sex appeal to pull it off? (Pun intended) Or could it even be a case of infinite regress?

Now though it is responsible for many cases of brain damage, I still believe that wrestling, if arranged properly, is mathmatically equivalent to a paradox of fate, and therefore as valid as any world religon as a reality tunnel for the modern human.

Failing that, it still has way more going for it than politics and I know heaps of people that believe that that's real, if not strangely similar.

how can you hate Sci-fi, dislike yes but hate it has doctor who, Star trek TNG, Enterprise, ghost hunters, and Eureka. yes they show and make crapy movies but you can't hate sci-fi. well i guess you can but if they start showing DS9 and voyager i can't hate them. but i do wish that they go back to the original way the put up there program just show a verity of sci-fi show and not these crappy movies or show a marathon of the twilit zone or the outer limits. you know there only one movie that i liked that sci-fi showed and thats was the 13 ghost movie. and they only showed it once the only one that was good they showed once and the dinosaur movies how can the graphics look worse then the ones in Jurassic park that was made in the 90s i mean come on.

but i actually liked this one dang.

I loved Atlantis, its was really starting to come together too. I'm annoyed now.

That said Firefly was superb and that only made one season.

As for that monstrosity Enterprise??? How the hell did that manage 5 sessions when all of them were garbage.

Hehe. I agree without reservations. It started out as crap and went downhill from there.

Shame about Atlantis. It's pretty much the last Sci-Fi series I've found worth watching.

It would feel like 5 if they tied you to a chair and made you watch them.

They have blown every chance they had to ask what the Ancients called the ZPM. Since these are critical to power any Atlantis class starship, why do they not ask when they have an opportunity? The Pegasus Replicators made them, and the last opportunity was last week's episode.

Another good Sci-Fi Series trashed ... The Sci-Fi channel needs
to re-think the way they run things ...

I don't see the new Stargate Worlds game ... doing good if the
StarGate series ... id canceled ... ?

No Star Trek ...
No Stargate ...

You need to cancel those stupid weekend ... movies now ... Sci-Fi .. does ..

The people that work for the sci-fi channel are morons, thank about it,
they cancel Stargate sg1 the greatest sci-fi show in the world just because it
didn't get enough ratings and now they are canceling Stargate Atlantis, how sad.

If these people had any common sense, they would have kept the two shows, instead they
cancel the shows just to prevent a short term financial lost.
I have a idea, if something is broken don't throw it away, fix it
or if your business is losing sales, don't close it down just because
its not doing well, try doing something different but NO they had to cancel
the Stargate series just because of low ratings.

Oh well, thats the sci-fi channel for you.

I've enjoyed Eureka so far.

But as a whole, I must agree with what is being said here. SciFi channel has gone into the B-movie pile of poo.

I believe they axed SG-1 due to cost of the show vs income they were getting. It was turning into a money sink. They didn't see there was enough of a following to pay for all those fancy graphics.

So, soon there won't be much left on Fridays for me to watch once Atlantis & Galactica are gone. There is a spin off from Galactica called Caprica coming soon though...who knows how that'll turn out.

LOL are you serious? since when has any TV station had regard for "feelings"? it's about profit. simple as that.

slight shame about atlantis, but it's been going downhill. i had some hope for this season, but after the lame return of weir, it's been pretty dull. they got trapped in the same hole that ST did: repetitive plots. c'est la vie, the best sci fi is in written form anyway.

Ubernaught, you're not a Robert Anton Wilson fan by any chance? If the Sci-Fi Channel had any real guts, they'd be working on a miniseries of the Illuminatus trilogy...

Those movies they make, WTF?

There are a few pearls at the bottom of the dung pool. I really liked the first two Dune miniseries, although I fear that they are no longer capable of doing a good job if they try for the third one.

Let SF make more f those B-movies, one day SF will run out of money if they keep making those movies.

thats another problem stores are mixing fantasy and sifi into the same thing it would be of if the just labeld it fiction but instead i look under the header science fiction and see a whole floor to celling set of shelves filled with lord of the rings.

i also agree if your going to name a chenal sifi show scifi stuff then peole will know what there going to get makes life eaiser.

*headdesk* I can't believe they did it again. Someone somewhere either isn't doing their homework properly or just has their head buried in the sand. Or, despite the company name, isn't interested in making sci-fi.

Awe shit they canceled good shows like SG-1 and now SGA. Sci-fi is crap now for doing this. I mean who watches doctor who ?? :)
Well, they are rolling out Sanctuary soon. Who knows if it'll be good or not, though. And the various BSG prequels (Caprica is only one).
