Twilight--No Box--False Advertising

Twilight--No Box--False Advertising

I love GalCiv.  I have every single version, all the way back to the original OS/2 version from 1994.

But I'm annoyed at the package I just received with Twilight of the Arnor.

I paid full freight, but all I got is a CD.  No printed manual.  Most importantly, no box--even though there was a PICTURE of the box on the order form.  That seems like false advertising.

That's crummy.  I want the box and a printed manual.

No edit button...again... :( :NOTSURE:

I just wanted to add that i myself was disheartened that DA had no box to speak of too, but once the cover art was loaded onto the site my problem was solved.

How is this not a perfect solution?

Its a boring solution, cant craft a conspiracy theory

For the most part, those yelling really hard, as opposed to "nice to have" tend to also yell about "saving the Planet". Yet they shoot for a box thats around a hundred times the volume of its content, a manual that is out of date as soon as its printed, and certainly will be after the usual updates are released.

I'll stick to download, cheaper and gives more room on my Study Shelves for whats important. Incredible fuss over nothing - I wish my life was so simple all I had to worry about was the provision of a box 100 times the volume of what it contained. Talk about being lead by marketing .....

We have never shipped a box with an expansion pack ever in 15+ years.

Hello Brad,

Boxes? We don't need no steenkin' boxes.

Wow. Has it really been that long? Not bad considering 4x supposedly died long ago.

Now for a real complaint. Why don't I have a lower member number considering my copy of Gal Civ is so old the wrapper has petrified? :)

Since there were boxed versions of the Gold Edition (I recalled seeing it at the local store), will there be a boxed Ultimate Edition in the future?

According to Kryo, no.

You know whats really false advertizing, the photos on the boxes of those blue round swimming pools. There are like 8 people in there, at least 2 of which are adults on rafts. In print is the size if the pool at like 6' in diameter and 3' deep.

So they shrink the picture of the people and stick them in the pool to make it look bigger than it is. Now THAT is irritating.

But i guess as long as the pool comes in a box everyone is happy. ;)

Sorry in advance to both sides of the argument but, here is my 2 cents:

1) I could care less if I get a printed manual or a box.
2) I frequent the forums so I knew advance that I would not receive either.
3) Had I not frequented the forums, however, I would have assumed that a box was available based upon the information available on the order pages (images and text).
4) In my mind, if enough people made this same mistaken assumption or would have made this assumption had they not visited the forums (whether or not they actually wanted a box or manual), then StarDock should:

4a) at least apologize to customers for misleading them (be it intentionally or otherwise... I'm not going to be the judge of that, but suspect it was unintentional)
4b) and make strides to resolve the confusion for future customers by explicitly stating that he box is just a mock-up.

No box is OK - but $20 shipping for just a CD ----- thats a rip.......

Seconded. I live in the UK and the postage for a TA CD doubled the price of the game! As such I couldn't afford a CD copy. The DA postage was reasonably priced; what's with the insanely high postage for TA. There is no way that it costs between $20 and $30 to send a disc in a sleeve to the UK. In fact I know it doesn't because someone posted a 12" LP (as in an old-school record, that is 1 foot square in size) to me from the US for about $10 postage.

Is there anyway that I can get a CD sent to me at a non-Zimbabwean postage price?

It's costing $20 to ship to europe?  Are you sure??  We use an external fulfillment center so I am definitely interested in what is getting charged for shipping.

It cost $20 to send SoaSE to Canada. That's more than I've paid for similar items off eBay. Made the extra $10 or whatever for the collector's edition that much more painful... When I think about it, that's the most I've ever paid for a single game.

...crap that was a lot of money.

Its costing that much to Australia. $20 for box and or manual I could understand. Just the CD should be at least half that. I want to have the complete experience and all, and would have liked to have had the CD to include in my gold edition retail box, but as I stated, postage is a rip.

Yup i got mine the other day here down under and not that i care too much, i payed what i had to pay...but it is certainly cause for concern when i have my TA packaging in front of me in what looks to be a fairly standard bubble mailer that is available for around $1.95 (less in bulk i'm sure) and the postage cost on the front states $11.95.

So out of my $20 that accounts for $13.90.....I'll assume another $1 for other incidentals, but that still leaves $5 unaccounted for...

So an extra $5 for every overseas CD order (or was it domestic too?) makes for a nice little bonus....

As long as we get the Epic Generator in some future patch i won't mind one bit.... ;)

Guys, your defense is pretty lame. The box was a mock up of a box IF THERE WAS A BOX? Brad said they never shipped expansions in a box so what do you mean IF THERE WAS A BOX? You folks knew darn well there would never be a box so the art was deceptive. admit it and be done with it. TAKE IT OFF THE order page. Cut your losses, stop trying to defend a bad judgement call. At this point it is really not that big of a deal but the more you try to defend it with the lame responses, the worse it will get...for nothing. You have made it clear there is no box to ship so therefor fans should stop asking for one. At least take if off the page...put a picture of the the CD up instead; you can show the CD art. OR plainly state there is no box because not everyone reads the forums before they order.

Myself, i was ticked when I got just the cd with a paper sleeve. But I got over it by playing the excellent game. However, reading these forums and seeing the cavalier attitude towards legitimate complaints is getting me ticked again. Maybe I shouldnt read the forums.

I am not saying give us the damn box, I'm just saying you should say, sorry, we didnt mean to imply youd get a box. Our mistake. Then take it off the page so nobody else "gets the wrong impression."
Then get on with life and make more great games.

They apologized on the first page for the confusion on the order screen. I doubt they will apologize for drawing a mock box to help sell the product as it is a common practice and there is no need to apologize for how a company does business. It's their company. :HOT:

A simple "Please know that you will not get a box with your order but rather a paper envelope." would keep others from expecting the same thing though.

The more I've thought about this the funnier it has become. At first I thought very much that it was deliberate false advertising. Now I don't think so as much as it was non-deliberate false advertising. They did not go through the trouble of drawing a false box complete with the logos that accompany normal ones. Rather it was a normal practice to do this so it was no trouble at all.

Still hilarious. Every time I imagine a fan finally receiving their game after a week or so of excitement and they get an envelope. lol! :CONGRAT:

I love these games as much as I loved Christmas oh so many years ago and the excitement is about the same. Imagine Christmas morning finally being able to open those presents under the Christmas Tree and there's a bunch of envelopes!   Too funny. I know, I'm pathetic and shouldn't get so excited over games, but it's who I am.

I also imagine the day I go to BestBuy and in the games section there are dozens of paper envelopes with magic marker drawn titles.  :SURPRISED:

Got my TA CD today (it took so long...)

I posted in another thread that i'm at least a bit upset.
As other customers I thought that I would receive a box and got a CD in a slipcase in an envelope and I'm really glad that the cd is intact because an envelope like that can't prevent any damage. I paid 20$ for this, but I knew that before. The price for shipping from Stardock is doubled in the last year if someone ask, i don't know why but for that package it's a bit too much.

For Europe, in my case Italy, is 20$. Then we have VAT (+15% i think for most digital product, 20% in this case). I don't know why today I had to pay 11,84€ to get the game from the mailman. It says that is 20% of 31,70€ + 5,50€ tax from my post office. 31,70€ is the price of the game+shipping (29.95$+20$). However this is a problem of us european. In the end I paid the tax that I hadn't paid buying digital.
I think I'll buy only digital because stardock is one of the few sh that actually doesn't make pay tax. Until it last.
Obviously it's not Stardock fault. The fault is of the fake free market in Europe.

The only thing I complain is the way the product is presented. If I want to buy GalCiv2 retail, GalCiv2 Gold and DA expansion I'll see the exact same kind of product. Same fake image (mockup or whatever), the same description (Digital Download + CD). There's no way to know that one will have the box and the other the cd only. And a customers doesn't have to read the forum to know what a description make him think. And well, usually games are shipped with box, only stardock (and few other) ships cd only game (and people usually want the retail version because they want the box, not a backup cd so is normal to assume that they will receive it).
Also, knowing that I will receive a cd instead of a box for that sum of money can change my mind about buying it or not, so the information is relevant.
I don't want my money back or a box that doesn't exist. I only want stardock to admit that it's their fault, without the intention to damage the customers but a simple naive behaviour in writing the description, and then change the information on the site and online store to avoit further mistake and problems with the customers. I don't think this is too much to ask.

Thanks

Did this postage cost issue ever get resolved? Can I get one sent out to me now, or will it still cost bajillions for postage?
