LAN game with 6 players

Hi there,

I'm about to have a catch up with friends for a LAN gaming session. I really want us to play Sins of a Solar Empire at this game, but only 3 of us have the game, and the others are dubious. The LAN day would be perfect for winning them over. I can see that you can have 2 players on a private LAN with the one license. Can you have 6 players all playing a multiplayer LAN game with 3 licences?

Yes you can. BUT, only one from each license can go online.

Its a great way to play lan games and as you said win them over :p
But if one of your friends chooses to play online one day, you cannot login to ICO.

cheers :D

Yep, 6 people can play LAN with 3 copies, but like Multi said this does not apply to online ICO - the keys need to be unique for each player for that.

But then the other guy has Sins on his computer with my key ... so he can keep updating it after the LAN?

No, updates require that you be logged in to the site or SDC with your account to get them. If you download the patch on your machine then just copy it from there to the other, they wont have any cookies or SDC settings for your account with which they could get updates themselves. And of course you can (and probably should) uninstall the game from their machines after you're done playing.

Pretty sure you have to log in to the Sins website or Stardock Central to do that. It's always asked me for my Stardock username and password whenever I wanted to get the newest patch.

I suspect that on LAN (not using Ironclad Online) that technically it'll work if you use NO serial numbers (even though Ironclad/Stardock ask that you limit to two per serial). Because as kryo says, you can download a self-installer for the 1.03 update (using the username and password of a person who has registered the game), then simply copy that to each machine via USB drive, CD-ROM, network, whatever, and install it.

If I'm incorrect, and the standalone patch refuses to run w/o a serial, then my next guess is you can probably use the same serial on every machine on LAN (but again, not Ironclad Online).

I am not advocating this long-term. Stardock and Ironclad are awesome - make sure those darn people who don't own it buy it! If they refuse, hold their PCs hostage.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I love Sins and am very happy with the purchase. With luck this LAN day will win 3 more to the community!
