So I thought I was doing good

So I was playing my first game, medium map vs 3 other AI. I got placed next to a back planet with no access but the one i had to it, so I took that planet over, switched my home planet and made my old home planet a major base (lots of turrets and stuff). Spent about an hour building up both planets, took some asteroid and built up its defenses. anyways so after an hour and a half I decided to start attacking people. I built some frigates, missle frigates, 2 battle ships, and went to the planet (asteroid really) in front of me. The alien guys  had colonized it, so I quickly slaugterd the few frigates there and what not (im tec) and took over the planet.

Just then I got a message "incoming hostile forces" and stuff and zoomed out and saw a crap load of ships jumping in. I decided to try and fight them, and when they came in the battle begin. I took out a few of their smaller ships, a cruiser or 2, then...I got hit with some weird white...aoe spell thing. It totally disabled my ships ability to use special attacks and took down my shields. I moused over the ships and almost wet myself.

They had a "mother ship".

A mother ship?! How do I get one of those? Needless to say they killed my Kol battleship, I had a carrier jump in at the last second and with the other battle ship (colonizer one) I took out the mothership but had to retreat. I ended up loosing my colony ship as well, and all of my frigates but I made it out. I made a long range cruiser and came back and killed the stupid remaining battleship, but...then they kind of brought their whole force and uh...yeah...i kind of stopped the game there.

In anycase, my question is how do I get a mothership? Is that race specific, or can the tec get it? It looked cool and hurt like a mother.

Sorry for the lack of ability to know the different races. I just got the game today.

its just a type of capital ship that advent use. it colonizes new planets...and you have one that does that too...but the aoe is unique to that ship.

yep the advent start out rather weak but those caps they have if built up properly can do alot of nasty things. ive found playing tec against the ai really you should invest in the lrm research, theyre long range and cheaper than your regular light frigate, you put them in a group with a support cap with shield or armor regen and itll help you out early in the game well enough to give you the time to research the other stuff youll need.

in a choke point planet id also suggest that you build not only defenses but frigate factories at least two or three. biggest reason being is tht if youre short on forces during an invasion you can batch up some more to help out in that area with the invading fleet long enough to get a primary fleet in there to wipe out the invaders.the other thing to keep in mind is that alot of the times on bigger maps where yore dealing with 8 or more factions its usually good to leave some forces behind in the hotspots to help support your defenses because it makes the attackers job hard enough to think twice about just walking into an area and trying to blow you up. hangar defenses in hotspots are very very useful. the importance of fighters in a defense cant be stressed. hangars are one of the first things i take in the research tree. a heavilly fortified planet with about four of those and turrets with a couple of regens protecting them, its a virtual slaughterfest. planet bombers usually dont last long enough to actually start bombing the planet.

Yeah I actually feel kind of stupid. I read the manual for the first time after I posted (while at a business meeting lol) and saw that its just their colony ship. I was going to say...for a "mother ship" it looked kind of small. xD

Thanks for the helpful replies though. :)

Well, it's not "just" their colony ship. It just has that ability. It's the same as the TEC Akkan Battlecruiser that you have which can also colonize. But it's big, it's bad and the Advent have different special abilities on the Mothership then you do on the Akkan.

But in any case, since this is your first game I think you went too hard. Start on a small map vs. just one AI on easy. I did that for my first 3 games or so to get used to the interface and game mechanics. And then you'll learn that you expanded way too slowly and your fleet sounds like it was much too small. You should take over as many planets as you can quickly, keeping in mind your economy (don't want to go bankrupt). Meanwhile building up your fleet logistics so you can match them in size. One thing I noticed when I moved up to medium maps vs. 3-4 AI is that I wasn't building a big enough fleet.

Anyway, good luck!

The Mothership is often touted as the best of the three "colony" capitals, incidentally, both for its shield regen and for its Malice ability. If you see one in an enemy fleet, its generally a good idea to waste it ASAP.

The Progenitor Mothership is central to the Advent. While the Vasari equivalent, the Jarrasul 'Space Whale' Evacuator also has some nice abilities(Drain Planet, Gravity Warhead, Nano Disassembler), it isn't as important to the Vasari as the Mothership is to the Advent, with it's Malice, shield recharge and Resurrection abilities. It also has the strongest base hull of any Advent capital, but it has the weakest armor rating - only 3 points. That's how much armor a Vasari Fighter has.

Interestingly, both the Mothership and the Evacuator are striking(and kind of ugly) in appearance, with the Progenitor being that hideous stick boomerang- thing and the Evacuator being the bulbous whale. The Akkan though has nice garbage-barge-turned- -capship industrial looks. I suspect that it's a large trade ship converted to a military vessel with improvised armor and weapons bolted on.

According to the manual, every TEC capital ship except for the Kol Battleship is a retrofitted trade ship converted to military use. The Kol Battleship is the only '1st gen' capital ship designed and built entirely for military use.

Also you wont win any maps with owning just 2 planets...
if you turtle that much it wont get you anywhere.

What does 'aoe' mean?

Correctly, it should be 'area-effect' instead of 'area of effect'.
