newbie needs help completeing a game

Hi all

I really like the game but I just can't get going.I watched all the tutorials and I played a game on a small random map but I always have to surrender? What are the settings for a beginner who wants to learn the game?I buld up frigate ships and one battlecrusier, but when I do the enemy builds up twice as many pirate ships. Also I try to do miltary research and all I get is insuffient messages? I have metal and crystal asteroids with constructors on them. So what am I doing wrong? Is there a beginners walkthru I can follow on the web somewhere? Im stuck   Will someone give me some pointers.ty

A few tips I can think of :)

- Start on a smallish map with no pirates (Small Random No Pirates, for example :P)

- Play against 1 AI at first, set it to easy.

- Make sure you colonize surrounding planets. Use either colony frigates that you can build right away, or get a colony capital ship.

- Make sure you upgrade the planet's you just colonized Infrastructure, so it actually starts making money instead of costing money to maintain.

- I would say start with the TEC, they're the easiest to get going because they get Trade Stations very quickly (2 civic labs).

- TEC is also most straightforward in terms of abilities, so you don't need to worry about it as much all at once.

Having no pirates will probably help you out a lot, but if you have any more specific questions feel free to ask :)

After winning 1 on 1 without pirates. Play with pirates...keep the bounty of the AI higher than yours so that pirates will attack the AI. Unless, you're ready for pirates to attack you; so that it will give your capitalships experience points.
Don't colonize planets/asteroid in the direct path from a pirate base.

Thanks Annatar - . Your experience sounds like it will help me as well.

Sometimes the best offense is a good defense ... as with the other posts, make sure you are upgrading your infrastructure.

Don't try to expand to quickly ... that can lead to you stretching your forces to thin.

If you build up the defense around your planets ie, gauss platforms, fighter docks, and repair facilities, that will help you protect your planet as your build your fleet.

Be prepared to spend several hours playing (not all at once, unless you want to). I spent 8 hrs playing my first game (1v1, normal AI, with pirates).

Lastly, build more ships!

Hope this helps .... good luck!

-You can hold your cursor over the research item to see what is required to access it, such as x number of military/civilian research stations.

-Your first capital ship is FREE, you just need to build the capital ship yard.

-Bribe the pirates, it's in the tab next to research/under bounty. You will see a timer, when it reaches 0 you will receive a message (sometimes you won't notice), it will flash read and you have only about a minute to out bid everyone else.

-Ship info shows what ships are good Vs what, along with armor type.

-You need to upgrade your fleet logistics (research tab under logistics) to field more ships at one given time, but with higher levels it will reduce your income (metal, crystal, credits) by a increasing percentage.

-Expand towards choke points to hold off the AI while you figure out what the heck is going on.

-Repair bays are your best friend for static defense vs the AI.
