MP Unplayable..

MP Unplayable..

Well, I've run out of ideas. I really enjoy Sins, and I want to dive into the multiplayer aspect of the game. But I've encountered a problem that's disrupting that. Before I explain, let me note that I've read the numerous threads on hosting issues, opening ports, router issues, P2P protocol, etc etc. My problem seems to be of a different breed.

I can use ICO. I log in. My displayed ping is about 30ms. I try to host/join a game (doesn't matter which), and here's where the problem starts -- extreme lag spikes. We're talking massive packet loss. I've been doing most of this testing joining games as hosting a game makes it unplayable for all participants. I notice the connection issues during the setup screen. It lags when I change my faction. It lags when I change my team, (upwards of 20 seconds) etc etc. The chat is just fine (which I assume is still ICO). All the while my displayed ping is never above 100ms.

The game starts, and instantly my ping goes from an average of below 100ms to upwards of 5,000ms. Then these numbers jump back and forth. It stutters every 20 seconds. The only thing I can think of is I'm getting massive packet loss (or lack of sending a steady stream). So I started tweaking.

I enabled the ports/app through the Windows FW. I tried disabling it all together. I tried changing the MTU size. I called my ISP, and my connection's fine. No P2P restricting, no bandwidth throttling, my speeds are on target (6mb down, 400kb/s up), and they don't restrict the ports required by Sins, or ICO - 6000, 6112. I feel it's the upstream on my end.

I've run out of ideas. I really want to experience the multiplayer, but for the last 3 days I've tried everything I can think of short of getting a new ISP. I've reformatted -- still the same problem. I'm starting to come to the sad conclusion that I just can't play Sins online with my current ISP.

If anyone had any possible idea for a solution that works short of getting a new ISP, I would be forever in your debt. :\

Ok, i got a question... how do you view/change setting for your modem? The Monk mentioned hardware firewalls and thats all i got left on my checklist (i dont have a router) its the last part to change, but i have no idea my modem had a firewall (tho not surprising) let alone how to access it. Thanks

Check the modem's manual.
Usually it will have IP address like 192.168.1.254 (which you type in internet browser address field), password and username are usually admin.

Also try downloading Hamachi, it creates a LAN network which people can connect to. Basically people all over the world who join your Hamachi network can play with you as if it was a simple LAN game.

Is there anyway to fix the lag problem on super fast University Ethernet connections or am I just screwed for being able to play online?

Thanks for the Information... apparently i dont have one, and shaw (ISP) dosent want to help do anything to their modem (fair enough i guess). So i have a computer hooked up to a commercial cable modem, no router, no internal modem firewall, and turned off McAffe, Windows Firewall, and i have nothing else... still cant host... well this is as far as my computer savy goes, i am not an IT Tech but i am not an idiot either and i have spend over 7 hours tryng to figure it out... i give up. Luckly its such a small problem that i can find games hosted by others with EASE.

If you read my guide (Networking and SINS) you'll notice that McAfee is one to the programs I've found that has been in direct conflict with SINS on some systems (the windows firewall however works fine enabled with the proper exceptions).

Some security software isn't ever truly "off" until its un-installed completely (it just happens that way sometimes). Windows Defender and Windows OneCare live must be disabled completely (the processes themselves as I've listed in my forum posts and guide) must be terminated via taskmanager. I have contacted MS about the issues SINS has with their products and hopefully they'll be resolved in an update.

Please contact me via xfire (the1monk) for more help.

thanks,

Thanks Monk, I read your guide a few days ago (understood about 90% of it) I turned off Windows Fire Wall and McAfee just "make sure". Cant seem to find anything else in the pipeline, and i am not going to Uninstall McAfee to play a game. As far as Defender and OneCare i dont have them as far as i know unless they come with Vista (possible just dont know). I will look for their processes to make sure. Thanks

Ha Ha! Yea! I can host, still getting error message but i tested again and people joined, i must have gotten it a while ago but no one wanted to join my previous test games.

P.S - The Monk, that was with McAfee ON, so it dosent interfear after all, but it maybe part of the false test message i am getting.

It depends which McAfee you are running (there are differing personal and enterprise versions). Some people are allowed to run the "enterprise" versions of their work AV's at home etc. Believe me, I've exhaustively tested some of these "security" software suites, and McAfee (certain versions) do in fact conflict with SINS. :)

P.S. - guess you missed that part in my guide (on your first read) where I say "you may get that warning message from ICO after following my instructions, however still be able to host" :)

I got McAfee prebuilt in my labtop from Dell, I dunno i am not the pro you are, I am not trying to argue with you i just noticed i left mcafee on when i got to host successfuly and thought it might be relevent/usefull to you. I did read that part of your guide, i knew about the message not being 100% i still hosted just after 2 minutes no one joined.

P.S - Dont you PS me you!!! PS's are MY thing for forums!! Dont steal my schtick...
