Why does my fleet keep "regrouping" during combat?

I know it seems like a smart plan. However, if I've JUST grouped everyone up, gotten battle formations ready to invade a new planet (I was raiding pirates, and I had more guns than they did), why is it that when my ENTIRE fleet arrives at the SAME time, after 5 seconds of combat that wussy out and start retreating? It's wasting valuable time and it's killing my ships. Is my grouping wrong if I have group move enable for everyone to arrive at once? Do they need ot be tightly packed together? What gives?

Set the fleet's engagement range lower and their formation tighter, both accessible via the fleet tactics window.

Will those settings changes also help to keep a fleet from jumping into phase space in an annoyingly long, straggly string of ships? I wish I could get a fleet to wait until every single ship in the fleet was ready to jump, in order to make a simultaneous launch. If there's a special setting for that, I must have missed it.

Yes there is a setting for this you right click on the green movement arrow to toggle through the different phase jump behaviors

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I understand what you're asking?

this is covered in the in-game tutorial. fleet management iirc.

you see the green arrow in the bottom right of the ui? right click that to where it will all be green. then your fleet will wait in formation before phase jumping

I love watching them all jump in at the same time. Every time I see my main offensive fleet jump, it's always reminiscent of the Rebels jumping in at the Battle of Endor.
