Moons and space stations

I have seen other posts about this but i thought i would make another one.

As far as i know there are no moons currently implemented but i think that there should be some. In RL most planets with any significant gravity have moons, our solar system alone has more than 40. In Sins you should be able to colonize moons with civilian, commercial, military, research, mining etc.. imagine having a moon with a giant gauss gun or an array of sensors or something of the sort. Or simply a colony of civilians who have made their home there. And what about planets with more than 1 moon? they could a sort of orbiting fortress or space station, Moons would add an awsome gameplay dynamic and add to realism aswell. I think that moons would be an excellent thing to implement.

And what about space stations? In Gal Civ 2 you could build tonnes of space stations anywhere you wanted. In Sins maybe a player could build (or they could have already been built and are a left over of some ancient civilization) around a planet or they could even have their own grav well. Or what about building a space station AROUND a moon?

What about space anomalies like huge clouds of gas? these gas clouds could block vision (maybe an ancient space station is concealed in it), block sensors and disrupt certain ships. Imagine your fleet just arrived at a small asteroid belt to see a huge cloud of gas which is seemingly harmless, but as you aproach it your fleet becomes under attack and an enemy armada bursts out from the cloud of gas unseen by your fleets sensors.

And just a question, what happens if your fleet is traveling in a phase lane and an enemy fleet is coming in the oppisite direction? Or do you travel through phase lanes instantly?

What does everyone think about these ideas? or other things like commits, space radiation, or huge mobile ships like the deathstar in starwars?

I just read another post and it gave me an idea. The original post is here

"Canb we please have megaships??

huge vessels that would be the product of years of construct, the effort of entre civilizations, and the cusp of technology~!

please, can we have them!?!?!?"

Gal civ 2 has a technology victory, instead of just instantly winning, when you reach what would normally be a technology victory your civilizations gets a huge, insanly powerful ship that pretty much just bowls over your enemy, This could lead to some interesting battles between 2 of these, or a coalition of players who got together to try to take one down.

Mod the game and replace asteroid mesh with moon mesh. It is simple and quick.

<3 moons , <3 space stations , <3 expansions :SURPRISED:

But then you'd have Moons in places miles from the planets they would be circling and thus technically not really moons any more, but rather Planetoids or in extreme cases, planets.

This idea gets my vote, Moons are an important aspect of any solar system, and could easily serve as anything from firebases, to fleet shipyards, to research bases, to extra colony space.

If they ever add moons for real (expansion?!?!?!, we should be able to destroy them, with a megaship. The resulting explosion should be spectacular and cause tremendous splash damage. This would obviously have to be a late game research ability to add to the megaship...I foresee this being a "tide of the battle" changer.

Imagine sneaking into your enemies home planet (one who has just about beaten you down to pulp) and blow their moon sky high, wiping out half of his fleet. Then using whatever is left of your fleet...warps in and finishes off the job! That would be a wonderful come from behind, in your face move! Talk about the stories...

moon would be great. it would also be great if planetoids would really orbit the sun and moons orbit the planets.

I think that the planets orbiting would just get confusing. but moons orbiting would be great.

The devs have already commented on the desire to add moons at some point, in a post release patch... however,

that will never happen.

There are several different types of gas clouds in the game that have unique gameplay effects ;)

Please remember, the devs were all selected for having successfully passed the triple-A torture qualification exams.

Cardinal rule in game design: unless it's been tried and scrapped, never say never.

Unlikely to be exactly like that, sure. But what if Ironclad decided to incorporate the community's desire for moons and "outposts" into one? Wouldn't it make sense then that destroying large outposts on moons would have a decisive gameplay effect?

Not to mention that most moons are barely more than large rocks (Earth's moon is quite the exception), destruction of moons isn't that far fetched of a concept, anyway.

Moons have been discussed before, and i think the dev's agreed it was a good idea, but too late in the development process to implement it in time for the Feb 4 release date.

So we wait and see if it can be done for future add ons.

I hope that wasn't a reply to my post :P I just had to pick on Ron for thrashing pretty much every idea that's posted lately..

Bah, not every idea. Just the really stupid and / or rehashed ones. (planet killers...)

Mega ships / planet killers aren't going to happen -- do you really think otherwise?

HAHAHA...I can dream can't I???

What I think is irrelevant. What is relevant is that all the new people who are just preordering/buying the game have their own thoughts and ideas of "Hey, this would really cool", and they don't know what's been talked about in the many months of beta testing or not. The bottom line is, we don't know what ideas Ironclad has, and instead of posting crap like "It's never going to happen" (which you don't know with any certainty), maybe you should say "Well, we've talked about mega ships/planet killers before and so far they wouldn't fit in with the game".

Well...I for one, have read all the past threads where they poo poo'd the megaships and planet killer ideas! The only reason I mention it again, is purely for a wish list for Sins 2 OR for some talented modders to figure out how to do it!!! It's only a matter of time before we see these things...look at the PDS mod for HW2, it was huge!

HA! I'll wager some cold cash there will be either an expansion or sequel to Sins 1, as that is usually the norm for game franchises! GalCiv, MOO, Homeworld, etc...all had more than one expasion/sequel! I'll bide my time...

If it doesn't happen, oh well...Sins definitely will reside on my harddrive for a long time and I will enjoy FSU'ing my friends! ;-p

Eh, whatever -- your right, I should be more patient with the newbs around here. But this fascination with blowing up planets has gotten irksome.

I'd like to see so-called "megaships", but not as Planet-killers. I'd rather conquer a planet than blow it up.

Well that's two posts now in this thread saying "I know it was shot down before, but maybe making another post will change their minds" including the op.

Following on the idea of blowing moons up, why not have a ship that enables to you collide the asteroids in a system into the planet causing stupid amounts of damage - Deep Impact style. That would be cool!

Hehe, what about some vasari ships launching small APC's with torture specialists to a planet to decrease it's income for some time ^^, hehe X-(
