Online Connection Limitations

Will high ping rates cut it?

Well first off, I have been looking at screenshots. viewing videos, and following some of the reviews for this game since the beggining of this week and I must say this game looks to be what I have been looking for in a 4x or even a RTS Game.

Here is one of my questions:

How much will high ping rate players affect other players in this game? Does it pause the game for everybody for a few seconds or does it only slow down the "slow" players progress?

The reason why I ask such a question is because I am trying to find a game that is not really affected by a wide range of connection speeds. I am living/working in a remote place that does not offer high speed broadband. Only satellite DSL  :SNIFF!:  is available and that as you may know causes much of a delay and therefore a high ping rate. I can already tell that this game is worth playing single player but I would like to (for once) enjoy some multiplayer action.

What kinds of connections do you ppl have? Any dial-ups still?

Thanks

One player's lag affects everyone (otherwise you'd have a desync on your hands).

The requirements list broadband for multiplayer... I wouldn't want to try it with dialup.

I caused people to lag when I was on high settings

Now I'm on the lowest and it plays uber fast from begging to end.

Ok.. so no hope for satellite  :NOTSURE: .. still, it would be pretty neat if they implemented some sort of lag AI. That is, when a person seems to be lagging, AI would take over until the player could regain a good ping rate. Although that would require a single server instead of P2P. Are sins multiplayer games centered around a single hosted server?

Maybe its not too late! Maybe one of the devs will see this and consider lag AI! haha.. or not. Its probably too late in the BETA process to implement something like that anyways.

I can see it now...

"aha, I've microed all my units into perfect place, theres no possible way my enemy ca..."

*lags for three seconds*

"F@#$!!! MY FLEET IS ALL GONE FRIGNAMIT!!!"

Nope, it's basically P2P.

Out in the sticks myself, I can play with a smooth and stable game on hughesnet satellite. 700ish ping minimum. It's a bit of latency, but no the game doesn't run crappy and pause all the time. You're looking at a one second delay on action completion with a comparable connection, so you have to account for it and react retroactively. :)

I do have to wait till late in the evening though, the assholes have oversold the service about 10-1, it's a 1500/200kbit connection when the stars align, but on a good day you're still getting 3-400 down at 9pm eastern time.

Obviously there is a limit to how much you can do on it, but currently the bad resource utilization in the beta with large unit numbers causes it to go into stop motion before the connection does, and I've got dual 3.2 ghz xeons and a 7800gs, so they ain't exactly small if not a top end graphics card.

I have DSL and it works fine......

.....as long as you don't mind the "automatic pause button"

and the hate letters you get.

Yeah, has to be... Even though a host is required to act as a "server" or central data point, there is simply too much data for even broadband speeds to handle.

Its good to know that im not permanently stuck on just singleplayer based games!

How big of a file is the Beta?

500ish wasn't it? Beta 3 was under my download cap, but the second race addition added a bit to the size of it, had to start it late at night to hit the free period if I wanted it done all at once.

Right now, it's just over one gig, though it will almost certainly get bigger.

Satellite DSL or regular land line DSL? theres a big difference.
I expect hate letters anyways. Most of them probably telling me to stop the ownage!  :HOT:
