XP vs Vista performance after 7 months

Firingsquad

Performance is similar with both OS', when disregarding SLI and Crossfire setups. Well within the margin of error in most cases, and largely insignificant in others.

the software bugs alone make me stay away from it.

I'm waiting until vista has been completely hacked.

the only reason I was even tempted to get it was that there were going to be games that only worked on Vista. As it stands though none of those games are still vista only and few games in the future that I know of will be exclusive to Vista. Eventually that won't be the case, but hopefully by then Vista will be properly tamed.

havent had a bug with it, all that rain on my bright and shiny day are those stupid security features.

The security features are in and of themselves stupid. A better approach would be some kind of emulated admin access. That is you "tell" a program it has full access but really it's working with copies of the originals and looking at an emulated file system. It thinks it's working with files and folders, can change the registry etc... but really it's just creating a slight modification of your system which only applies to itself. Obviously some programs you'd want to have "actual" admin access. But for legacy support most programs don't actually need admin access. They just need to store things in the registry or read and right some files. Reading in most cases is fine. It's the writing that is dangerous. So when it loads and asks to see the registry it sees the registry with it's own modifications grafted on to it. Said modifications are not seen or used by any other program.

in this way you could load up some very bad programs and worst case they'd screw themselves up and never bother your system.

As i've repeated a few times driver installations or virus scanners etc would have their installers at the very least given admin access. But everything else would be looking at an assumed version of the OS and file system. You'd at least give explorer a real view of the file system. But if say... program X which has low privileges tried to delete a dll the OS could just say "sure" and then hide the file from that specific program while claiming that the file was in fact deleted. This might eat into your disk space, but with harddrives getting as large and cheap as they are I think it would be worth it and far more useful then the "restore" feature.

It will be a scary day when Vista will be the main supported operating system, and XP will be a thing of the past.

Vista isnt bad by god! the worst thing about it is that it wastes resources willynilly, beyond that on any halfway stable system it functions perfectly.

but many programs still screw up on it. I don't load my computer up to play with the OS. I load it up to run programs. And when my programs are less reliable or the OS is doing things I don't fully understand that means it's less useful to me.

As to my previous post being too verbose... I think I made a good point, I'm not apologizing because people can't be bothered to read anything.

and we're not apologizing because you talk to much.

I've never had such happen, my experience with vista (although a bit of a pain in the neck) is otherwise blissful.

Nope... just whining because the bad man expects you to have a grade school level grasp of the english language...

Get married and have 20 beautiful but very slow children then... and don't blame me when they suddenly turn blue for no reason or freeze solid on a warm summer afternoon...

no... I'm whining because you expect me to have an attention span longer than that of a fly

oh, and you talk way too much for any one point.

(psst, your paragraphs are riddled with grammatic errors)

vista is by far more stable than XP, just because SOME people have SOME errors with SOME programs does not make it the devil's puppet.

my intelligence is beyond your capability to impune it with any credibility. that you don't grasp that or don't realize that the point is obvious is most telling.

of course, because you cant get baby-hand holding vista to work.

Please... you'd make sense if we were talking about linux or some other more complicated OS... but Vista is like the bastard child of XP and OSX... so claiming I'm crying about it not working because "it's hard" is simply asinine. It has bugs and compatibility issues. Everyone knows that.

As to crying... listen kid, you were the one pissing and moaning because someone decided to contribute an insightful comment that took up a paragraph *shock*... and that just wasn't acceptable apparently as everything has to be dumbed down for you into little easy to understand soundbites... well... continue to whine and cry... As I said... Maybe if you act like a big enough tool I will finally start to respect you... in the same sort of way that failure on a grand enough scale can be impressive... who knows.

Love and peace, Karmashock.

if it was an insightful comment, or even one that had to take up a paragraph, I wouldnt have told you that you're garollous and verbiouse.
