Fighter missions

One thing I wish we had was the ability to assign fighters to protect certain ships.

as it sits my fighters go off after bombers wherever they might be. Can it be set up that fighters protect a target from bombers rather then running after something else? I would like to keep a fighter squad (or more) in reserve to protect a certain cap ship from being plastered by bombers while in retreat. Perhaps a "protect target" mission button or setting?

It could be that a carrier has the mission to protect a target and all fighters would act accordingly.

no iv seen the fighters from my cap ships go and fight the target of my cap ships rather than bombers which is annoying cos i have 2 keep telling them to kill bomers

On a similar note, I think it'd be quite handy if the fighter/bomber build/dock page also had buttons to select all active fighters or bombers owned by the selected ships, so you could issue orders easily.

It would also be nice to have them attack a certain class of ship , say either Frigates, Cruisers or Capital ships...

This should already be set up, but after testing it, it doesn't always appear to be working properly!  Select your fighters and right click the capital ship. They should stay with him and protect against hostile bombers within range. There appears to be a problem when the capital ship moves. We're looking into it. Good find!

Agreed, I think the fighters should be ponies, which shoot flowers from their eyes.

On a more serious note, I'd be happy with just an offesive/defensive button, and the kryo-button.

You know nothing about space ponies or you would have said "shoots RAINBOW flowers from their eyes."

My preference would be for fighters to chase bombers until air superiorty was achieved. It may be better for Garda Flak frigates to protect capital ships, especially the Sova Carrier and they are easy to move to where the cap ship is. I would prefer fighters to be actively seeking and engaging the bombers instead of waiting for the bombers to show up over my capital ships.

The idea here is to reserve some fighters. When in a pitched battle you do not send in all your troops, you hold some in reserve "just in case". In my case I do not want them going over to hit targets on the far side of the gravwell where I have my other battle going on but to stay with my damaged cap ship so it can have time to flee if the AI sends in a squad of bombers. This maneuver could make the difference between heavy damage and total destruction in a pitched battle.

This also allows me not to be forced to micro manage the battle either as my most important ships will be the best protected. They toss everything they have at my level 10 kol that I do not want to lose, so with 5 fighters in reserve to protect it, my other 3 level 5 cap ships go in and hit other targets with the rest of the fleet. My 10-kol draws the fire and wala! I win the battle! why? cause the fighters I held back kicked the bombers back to you know where!

First things first, though. we definitely need fighters to attack bombers first unless you explicitly tell them to. period. I am sick to death of blasting all my enemy's hangars in the first few seconds of a fight (I am a big fan of a massed carrier fleet, and don't usually bother with much else so I'm usually taking 100-200 bombers with 3 levels of heavy fighters into the fight, and have about 10-20 fighters) and watching my carriers get battered by my enemy's fighters since my fighters are off attacking a research station. I also don't think it is because the carriers are attacking the research station, because I'm usually showing the computer what 50 carriers will do to a planet. But yes, CAP is a great idea. Because I really, really, don't want to go to the effort of replacing a level 6 carrier in a fleet of 50. There just isn't enough xp to do that. ever.

If it works for you i would stick with it. The purpose of the Garda Flak is to shoot down enemy fighers and bombers and they can be positioned to stay with your battered cap ship with the game's current mechanics.

If fighters naturally sought out and attacked bombers, they would not be across the grav well attacking a research station and instead would be preventing the bombers from attcking the Kol by shooting them down on sight. I think as long as fighters were programed to go after bombers, you would be safe without potentially not having them participate in the battle.

I don't know about holding fighters in reserve, my experience is it is best to overwhelm the ai with everything you got.

Fighters seem to be broken at this time as they appear to behave like little bombers so I do not build any. I was not losing any cap ships as I have a large number of Gardas in my fleet. It works for me.

I agree with you that this would be a nice feature if it would allow you to not have to micro mangage the battle. My greatest risk for my expereinced Kol is it not pulling itself off the front line after suffering alot of damage.
