Why the future doesnt need us

Why the future doesnt need us

Superintelligent AI and the Singularity

What happens when we create the first AI that is more intelligent then the average human? Well, with technological progress at the pace it is today it will only take us 2 decades to acomplish this.

So what happens then? Do we hope we didnt make a mistake and live our lives letting the AI enhance themselves further and further. Or do we stop and think about what the consequences might be. We never know when a simple math problem asigned to a super intelligent entity might cause the extinction of the human race.

So, heres a questions. Should technological progress become more limited?

We wouldnt need insulin injections if it wasnt for the fattening food
why you arrogant bastard.
Type 1 is usually due to autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells which produce insulin. Type 2 is characterized by tissue-wide insulin resistance and varies widely; it sometimes progresses to loss of beta cell function. Gestational diabetes is similar to type 2 diabetes, in that it involves insulin resistance; the hormones of pregnancy cause insulin resistance in those women genetically predisposed to developing this condition.

diabetes (contrary to your anti-capitalist/american views) has less to do with eating than it does with genetic predisposition.
You must have the capacity to do so.
what? to be STIMULATED??? hardly.
we wouldnt need blood tests if big pharma would concentrate on curing diseases,we wouldnt need more UV protection if the ozone wasnt disappearing, hybrid cars are just the industries excuese to not further other energy source reasearch, more people buy cigarrates then niccatine(not smoke) patches, music should be free, baby CDs are hoaxe, video games rot your brain and waste your tim.

let me throw together a very quick arguement
1)UV protection has nothing to do with the ozone dissapearing, in case you hadnt payed attention that happened to be over the NORTH POLE.
2) we do have cures for diseases, just because the last recognizable one was polio doesnt mean it doesnt happen. want to know WHY we (and your damn nation to) cannot cure HIV? not because we dont want to, but because it has amazing mutigenic capacity and works like NO other deadly virus we have EVER encountered before, same thing with cancer.
3) hybrids have nothing to do with being lazy, it allows people to keep their money. if you want to attack the idea, do it for its falts, not because you want to make a political statement.
4) guess how much smoking has been reduced since hte 1950's? I bet russia has more people smoking (no wait, nobody can afford it.)
5) music does work on kids, it STIMULATES (hey look at that word!) the brain, not "baby einstein" shit, but music does.
6) music should not be free, do you want to make people starve simply because of their chosen profession? are you that much of a cynical arrogant bastard?
7) video games do not rot your brain/waste your time. actually quite the contrary is (probably) true.
You have the money to make it so.

let me see if I can make this clear for you subadequate education

CAPITALISM (do you know what that is? good.) WORKS.

It doesnt scare poeple away fool, the lack of money does
I'm sorry, I cannot see that in a nation that relies almost soley on its scientists

even excluding that you said you hated the system.
Vague? The tail tell sighs of consumerism poisoning is everywhere.
see what I mean when I say your telltale idea is "you suxors"? consumerism is not a poison, its good when properly regulated. just because russia tried a failed pseudocombination and couldnt keep up with America doesnt mean you should have your views tainted that "everthing consumeristic is evil".
You cant always fix everything, Rome learned that the hard way.
Rome didnt die because of carbon dioxide emissions, it was largely the work of christianity and crappy leadership. consumerism and capitalism are the same today as yesteryear's christianity, its such an indulgant and stable new concept that it overturns old governments, like russias.
Haha, way to be uncreative

yup! "always take wackos with a pinch of salt" is my saying.
I 'bash' on it because it could be better.

ok "god walking amongst mere mortals"
tell me how to fix it. if you so much as mention anything along the lines of "neuter and castrate the upper classes so that they cannot dominate the world" I will call you a stupid idiot and walk away.
Well, we do tend to waste a lot of time on trying to escape reality. Vidoe games and Television are the worst of three, reading is the better one.

Hey, who broke the thread?

I can't read anything past a certain point for some weird reason (Or even see the typing box until I managed to hit the advanced post button).
ok... lets stop talking about cyborgs and start talking about the new cold war that you guys just started -_- I can't read everything from the other page because it's broken, but...

1. there are more ways to 'escape' than tv, games, and books. there is also drugs, sleeping, and surfing the web to name a few. I wouldn't use the word 'escape' to define lesure distractions like the former, that kinda makes me wonder what kind of world you grew up in.

2. Capitalism does work, for some things, and at others it fails. Democracy works for some things and not for others, but as Churchill said "Democracy is the only form of government, except those others that have been tried." Humanity's societal structure is always changing and improving, this is definitely not the last stop.

Now back to the cyborgs

Cyborgs are neat, but as awesome as the borg are (and they are really awesome), I would not want to stick my penis in one. I can see artificial hearts, ears, probably eyes, but the complete merger of humans with machines is just... no! Too kinky and weird for me! And no immortals, people need to be able to die! Genetic engineering will definitely take precedence over computer/machine-people, because girls who are people are hot, and sex sells.

As for computers dominating man...

Computers are tools. Nothing more than tools. Even mine, which is dope, is just a tool. Even a super-intelligent tool is a tool, why would it want to take over the world? Why would it want to do anything other than serve mankind? Greed and dominance is something we can understand because we have evolved to dominate to survive. But a computer is a tool, all it does is tool.

BTW, what is meant by intelligence? How do you define intelligence?

I say intelligence is the ability to learn, computers now have 0% of that ability right now. So, a tool that was designed to learn. That tool could help out a lot with research, it could learn how you play Sins and crush you, it would make a great slave. All computers and machines make great slaves, they do exactly what you tell them to.

1) One of the bigger holes yes, where the ozone doesnt exist at all yes, but there is a decrease of it around the world
2) We could cure it, it just any new drug or vaccine takes over a billion dollars to reasearch, and seeing as the main demand for disease cures is in poorer countries that make up less then 17% of the world medical market the current pharma companies of today wont make enough profit to make so much research feasable. But it is possible.
3) Okay, fine, but I still think its a stalling manuever no matter what you say
4) I can say with certainty that more poeple smoke here. And I dont find it funny, people strave there because they have no money, people die. Is that funny?
5) Okay, it stimulates whatever capacity a child might have to think for all of a few minutes. The child would have to be subgected to more physical stimulation along with the music to make any lasting connection.
6) If you didnt need money to live it would be fine. I am sure patrons would still pay head over heal for good music, the amount musicians earn though is getting outrageously silly.

In realistic terms, you achieve a sharpening of whatever attributes you utilize in game. RPGs and the like can improve reading skills (and depending on the game reasoning / logic skills). FPS / action games can increase your hand-eye-coordination by a measurable, proven amount. Presumably, RTS / 4X games would help with the ability to handle information flow and then use it. (Oh, and 4X games can probably help with patience... that'd explain how I came out )

karma, if you had an implant in your ear that processed sounds from far away and then sent them directly to your brain, your body would stop using its eardrums since they would just get in the way.

Oh, I was thinking of the speaker as a built in interface to an internal computer. Allowing distance communication, the ability to listen to broadcasts, or the ability to listen to sound stored on or created by your internal computer. This would mean for example that you wouldn't need headphones.

I think a big misconception here is that cybernetics would come out and then everyone would use them and then civilization would collapse.

It's always a little dangerous to assume what other people think.

That isn't what I think. No matter how slowly it happens it will happen. And as to civilization collapsing, it's something that does happen. Throughout human history we've seen it happen again and again. Most of it we know more by digging up the trash of old civilizations more then anything else... forgotten in most cases by most and sometimes by everyone.
If they add it on during birth and then the chip dies, who knows what will happen?

Exactly. It's unlikely that anyone who designed the chip would design it to make sure it would be fine in the even that civilization collapsed.

it's called evolution. We are almost certain to be replaced by a superior species one day, it may as well be one we created.

I should hope it's something "of" our creation. It would be very sad indeed to be replaced by a different branch of the great evolutionary tree after we've made such strides forward.

Ultimately though, I think our brains are the newest form of evolution on earth.

I think I've said this before, but evolution first only happened through chance and random mutation. It was very very very very very slow. And the sorts of life that could develop from this were very simple. Somehow... these incredibly simple and slowly changing creatures developed sex. Which caused and explosion in evolutionary development allowing successful individuals to exchange genetic material. All complex life on earth was produced by this means. Now our brains linked in a great social network we call "civilization" allows for a massive social network of intelligent beings with the capability to discover, learn, invent, and remember.

I'm all but certain that evolution for us will (as in future tense) be driven more by our own tinkering with our natures more then sex or mutation combined.

We are the simple creatures that will give birth to the next great leap in evolution. Simple stupid animals compared to our descendants... our only redeeming quality in their eyes being that we were able to start the revolution. Ultimately I think they will be inorganic. Or perhaps a completely artificial fusion of the two. That is both organs and machine components engineered for each other. Being revolted by or disgusted by that future is as rational and significant as a micro organism being revolted... or instinctually disinclined by the nature of it's descendants. Our opinions simply don't matter.

With some luck our descendants will conquer space... will grab the very universe by it's neither regions and squeeze until it calls them daddy. That's what I hope... but what do you expect? I'm just a monkey.

Depends on your definition of organic. Whether your talking about carbon-based life, or bodies that, much like ours, are capable of self-repair and modification at a low (cellular / molecular?) level. The latter, I would hope, would be here to stay.

Thats why I basicly said, thank you for clarifying it. Curing HIV is economicaly infeasable because only the poor countries suffer greatly from it. Plus pharam companies cant even charge the prices they can in America to those countries because (like Brazil) they just make the price what they want it to be by the use of the "emergency" clause in the WTO charter.

I never once said that, yes I tend to think lower of Americans, but it is only because I have seen your explotation of others, and how greed is damaging an otherwise prospering nation. And the second comment has no bias, I was just stating that a lot of talent comes from other places, and that is true for all the nations of the world. Thats why talent shouldnt be hogged by one nation no matter how powerful and glorious it is.

there is only one definition of organic. carbon (and hydrogen) based.

www.dictionary.com

"2. characteristic of, pertaining to, or derived from living organisms:"
"4. of, pertaining to, or affecting living tissue: organic pathology."
"6. Philosophy. having an organization similar in its complexity to that of living things."

As far as I'm concerned, if you manage the self-repair / adaption / multiplication effects that living organisms have, you have living tissue.

they will not, carbon is the ONLY compound with the nescessary flexability to create micro based life, and life needs to be that building-block style in order to be self-repairing.

IT is not my responsiblity to inform you with detailed refrences for my sources of information I may state in a thread.(however had you actually been polite and asked nicely rather then the way you did I would have provided it)

Your the one countering my claims SO.

Show me anything thats been published in the last 2 years(with doesnt use information over 2 years old as refrences) that says Nuron fireing is only electrical based and doesnt have a backup chemical fireing mode(in the human brain).

Second, I may have actually been wrong in my gravity statement by 10 years 1963-1964 instead of 1953.

Look it up yourself gravity generation by a alloyed substance containing even numbers of 2 elements one has a even number of protons and nuetrons and the other substance has a uneven number of protons and nuetrons. When the substance is spun it creates gravity, the faster its spun the more gravity it creates. Objects placed in or over this field have less weight.

Lasty I never said ANYTHING about gravity shields, I said gravity shielding.
I use the next example because this is how it became common knowledge despite the fact it was proven before hand by the device I just mentioned beforehand by mutiple respected labs around the world.

3 Objects, 3 massive stars are orbiting each other, every time a eclipse happens, instead of the expecting tug inwards propagating gravity would cause the stars flew outwards slightly along there orbits.

What they found was the gravity forces acting upon the 2 outerstars was being reduced NOT propogated by the middle star during the eclipse and normal orbits resumed with line of sight was reestablished between all 3 stars.

Genetic memory.. I guess your proved that because somewhere down the line one of your ancestors mated with an Ass and your retained all the Asses skills and abilities.

./sigh. I'll have to dig up the research, its 4+ years old so I don't know *where* I'll find it.

This is from the same rough time frame as the original article I read (while doing a term paper).

Here's a more recent one... Still not quite what I was originally looking at, but it points to the fact that more than just reflexes can be improved.

This one refers to how it can improve other areas, such as "video games speed up your neural pathways". But thats then disputed inside the same article... grrr, I hate research, I quit.

You have enough to avoid saying I have no sources!

My answer to the question based on its proposition is no.

Firstly, we have no business asuming that computers will ever reach a state of self awareness, if they could, then they could have realization. If they could have realization then they would have conciouness that is new to the universer, atleast on this planet and its comprehension would have an explainable mathematical formula.

Since there is no mathematical formula other than the random cacophany of quantum circumstance that assembles us into asuming we are what we think we are, given this puny liminted sensile sack of stardust compared to the known bandwidth of the universe at large that dosnt have a finalized equation, then neither can an IT phantomed out of the void to suddenly tell humans to fekoff.

If anything, prescribed to do so with a point and click, humans will wipe out humans with AI not the other way around.

Since were on the topic of species oblivion(our own) whos to say Hawkin's theory of Radiation when dealing wtih singularities, where CERN goes live next month to blow a hole in the universe(.000000000000000000000000000000186% chance or somesuch) to test his theory, isnt his sudden spontaneous clarion realization into a suble mathematic harmonic that would allow us to wipe ourselves out nearly instantly and collaps everything around us out to helliopause and beyond into a spoonfuls volume of condensed universe out of some altruistic mad scientist wetest dreams and revelry of nostalgia to save mankind from suffering a slow extinction and thus save us from ourselves?

mmm, lets not forget the chance that the membrane theory is correct and we could have another big bang any time
