An epic game!

War, or not to war?

I am gonna try my best with this AAR.

I was getting frustrated, and had to keep restarting games on normal/intelligent AI(I always set them to intelligent)

At the start here were the races:

The Altarians

Torian Confederation

Iconians

Yor Collective

Thalans

When I designed my custom race I was about done with the game, but thought I'd give it one more shot. My first colony, Freebee I had a nice couple of production bonuses(one of each). Colonization began immediately. After several years, the Freebees were looking up, I had over 2 dozen colonies, and most of them were size 12+. I hadn't even actually met any other races for some time, I had just colonized the last few planets. My 'influence' was circular in nature. Well, the Freebees began exploring space, and finally began meeting other races. First the Altarians. They didn't seem to bad, they even traded techs a couple times. The Iconians, the allies of the Altarians(they seem to always ally in any game I play) were also making good, but most of there planets were size 12 or less. There military strategy: lots of fighters with fast engines and lots of fire power. The Altarian strategy: Big ships with weaker fighters.

Well, the next race I met was the Thalans, and the Yor collective had sent there flag ship just to meet the Freebee people. Another race that the freebees met, and found vary curious, was the Torian Confederation. They never amounted to much, nor did they ever even have any influence, they just sat there on there inital colonies. Not to worry.
Then, it became apparent that the Altarians had completely surrounded the Freebees on all sides of there influence. It reminded me of playing Risk, and owning Africa- and so I began the military build up. My first design was the Battleship Killer, a might cruiser, and as it turned out, didn't quite live up to its name but was definately an effective crusier. More like Fighter Squadron killer, as the Iconians would soon learn.

Well, the Altarians decided to help me in my conquest for war against them and decleared war on the Thalans. The Yor, being allied with the Thalans joined in the conflict. The world saw the military might of the Freebees during this time. Inorder to test our Battleship killers, we sent a fleet of them along with a few of our troop transport. We conqured two worlds of theres, but failed to take the third. One became a colony of Freebee, the other was handed to the Yor, as the Freebee republic was now running a deficate- and to facilitate good relations.
Our next design: Battleship(with Singularity drivers) proved to be a good design.
Mean while, the ever incrouching Altarians, seemed to have no good intentions up there sleeves- the Freebees called for war. The inital strategy was to take there eastern colonies by heading southeast, and take there western colonies by heading west. So, the war began, and three worlds quickly fell into the hands of the Freebees. However, the freebees had not originally known the depth of the Altarian empire- but they soon found out as fleet after fleet arrived on our door steps- although the battleship killer and battleship were good vessels, they delth well with the Iconian fighters coming in from the south. But compared to an ALtarian battle fleet- they were simply destroyed. Though, they had enough fire power to kill one vessel per attack. The freebees knew then that all was not lost- but it was lookign grim. The most productive worlds were blockaded, in that as soon as they produced a warship, an Iconian fighter squad, or Altarian battle fleet would, sure enough destroy it. The Altarians made a blunder at this time: They attacked the Dark Yor, and 2 whole fleets were destroyed. It took a third to finish off the Dark fleet. This didn't seem so big at the time but it was very big.

With the threat of extinction, the Freebees demanded a new warship, named for there great race. So, the Freebee was launched, the most powerful warship in the navy. This warship proved to be a thorn in the side to both Iconian fighters, and Altarian battleships! The Iconians invaded a world to the south, so the Freebees set out to liberate there brethern. And three weeks later did exactly that. The Iconians weren't as determined as the Altarians- and bowed out of the war. A great sigh of relief swept through the nation. At this time, the UP met- the wars had to stop. ANd thus they did. An uneasy peace set in, however Altarian battle fleets remaind in our territory- they obviously knew what was coming, and exaclty three weeks after the peace had been made the Freebees made a slew of invasionas across the western and eastern Altarian worlds, which would have crushed many other nationas- but only lead to more Altarian worlds- it was on! The Iconaisn again tried to retake one of our southern worlds, this time they failed, and several other transports were destroyed. Also, about 10 Altarian transports had appeared, and were aimed for undefended worlds. So, the Freebees sent several of there fast Battleship Killers to dispatch these transports- the threat of invasion was temporarily removed. The Altarians also continued there war with the Yor. It just shows how powerful there industrial cpacity was- they were kicking the Yors butts, and going tooth and nail with the Freebees. The Freebees attempted to start again with there offensive plans. In the west the Altarians were very powerful, and quick to retake worlds they lost. In the east, things were bogged down, but the Freebees managed to take a few more worlds, before there population hinderd them from mass invasions. At this time, the Freebee was still kicking butt, and delivered defeat after defeat to Iconain fighters to the south- time to bring those ships north. We made our peace with the Iconians yet again. (But they would remain positively on the ltarian side of things, as they'd randomly attack transports, but make peace as soon as it was offered). Not wanting two wars(considering the size of the Altarian empire, both in the east and west I am sure it would have counted as a third war) The Freebees again eliminated Altarian warships from around the prodctive capability- but this time with out the help of the Dark Yor. ALso, the campaign in the northeast started to look up as we finally took several nice worlds- but again the Altarians struck! They retook half there systems in the west, and in the east they had caput the offensive to all but a stand still. Then, they attempted to make short work of the Freebees- they aimed a transport at the capitol! The Freebees faught with pride that day, and pushed the ALtarians off there world.

A scout had located a network of freighters to the Iconians- and nothing guarding the freight. It was now time to test the new Freebee fighter, which was made in response to the Iconain threat. For three weeks the fighters unloaded on the frighters, but in battle they proved a failure.

About this time all but a few worlds in the northeastern portion of the Galaxy had been conqoured, but not a week went by that the ALtarians didn't try to retake them. On our western front, things were in disorder, and a policy of containment was now sought- the west was officially offlimits to military offensives. The Torians, now completely surrounded by our territory, and not wanting to join the fun, decided to make an alliance with the Freebees- and we should them our good nature by giving them two troop transports, and three battleship killers, and a fleet of defenders. The Torians were delighted.
However, a deficate was now forming for the Freebees. Every other week, Taxes and spending had to be adjusted. The stock market was rise sky high, and then the next week plumet like it hadn't even been there. The Freebees couldn't even keep an econo starbase up, before an Altarian battle fleet would appear and destroy it.

The fighters followed the paths of the frieghters and found several more ALtarian systems. We wondered allowed, "Is victory possible?"

In the mideastern Galaxy we managed to take a few more worlds, but costs were starting to show. Our transport producing worlds populations were all but destroyed, we had to move our transports from production worlds to populated worlds, to pick up troops.
At this point, not a week went by that the Yor didn't plead for some kind of aid. We provided them with some tech and a few fighters. The Yor were close to defeat. But we could barely keep our front lines supplied. Even the Freebee was starting to show its age, especially with Altarian dreadnaughts. The freebee could still do some damage, but couldn't face one of those one on one and hope to survive.

Then, something happened: we found the Altarian homeworld! It was time to show the Altarians that this war was serious. We sent 10 billion soldiers, and very quickly now, our transports were very fast.
The Altarians had begun to show some signs of weakness in the east- but definately no loss of resolve as they aimed to try and retake our worlds again! with the bulk of the fleet in the regine or enroute, however, we destroyed several transports, and the last one retreated.
Exactly five weeks after the homeworld of the Altarians was discovered, we started the invasion. Knowing that this was the capitol of this dangerous and mighty foe,
we sent our forces in in waves. The invasion was a success! The ALtarians had been humilated. The Freebees, still struggling with a deficate, ovvered peace with the Altarians!

The peace offer was not accepted! The Altarians were still stronger! They showed it ten weeks later when they struck back, and retook there homeworld, along with a lesser system, and almost retook a third! The offensive was in trouble.

At this time the conquered worlds of the ALtarians began to show there potential, an ship production was mighty fine. The Freebees desided against retaking the lost system- and instead aimed for the capitol planet and, in fact the entire Altarian system! Weeks before the next invasion, the first dreadnaught of the Freebees entered service- the Warfighter! With fast speed, able to keep up with trooper transports, and deliver massive fire power, the Warfighter was a fantastic addition to the Freebee navy. With two of them mass produced, and readied for the next offensive, they saw combat six weeks after the Altraisn had retaken there homeworld. Clearing Altaira's atmosphere single handedly, the Warfighter proved to be a monsterous warship. And the next week, we re-took Altaria, and the surrounding planets in one week! With the conquering of two other worlds due to our superior culture, the eastern galaxy Altarian empire was in regress! Our influence stretched almost end to end in the east.

A week later the Yor Collective surrendered to the Freebees! 17 worlds new worlds joined the nation of Freebees. With another quick offensive in the south east, the Altarians finally offered peace- and the Freebees rejoiced, from one end of the galaxy to the other with a major cash influx. For a decade war had been a part of the daily lives of the freebees- but no more, at least not for a while.

I'm sorry for the lack of pictures/screen shots. I had no idea the game would be so epic.

The next couple years were an important, yet quiet time for the Freebees. They, for the first time, setup space stations without them being blown up. Multimedia and virtual reality became the word of the day. We began to setup trade routes with our rather fast freighter named, Trading Vessel. Also, our fleet was bulging at the seams, with just over 1500 ships, most of them capital ships. The Dark Yor, our old friends from the Altarian Wars, were now in a war for there very survival, the entire galaxy had declared war on them, and the Iconians and Altarians were in the process of seeing that the job was done. The Iconian fighters, famous for there speed and high amount of fire power protected there equally fast transports. The Altarians sent several battle fleets to clear the Yor atmosphere, and speed things along. Combined warfare at its best! The Freebees couldn't stand the news that there long time allies the Dark Yor were finished. So, we presented the Dark Yor with an entire system in our far east. They relocated happily, and as there homeworld fell, there race was preserved.

Also, the Freebees had never seen Iconaian and Altarian fleets in there systems, and not been on the firing end, so several fleets were sent to the region- incase things got out of hand. the planet Dark Yor IV to the Iconian Regime. The planet fell to the influence of Freebee(guess the Iconian soldiers weren't very dedicated) with in one week. The Freebees handed everyone a big fat check to sign a peace treaty with the Dark Yor, and handed the Dark Yor there planet. The Iconians and Altarians weren't satisified, and set out to reconquer the world. Well, this time the Freebees opened fire- with there new warship the Beowolf ablitterating the Iconian fleets. But one Altarian fleet survived and reconquered the world. The Iconians quickly made peace, but as a requirement were forced into making peace with the Dark Yor- they'd never fight the Dark Yor again. Again the planet fell to my influence, and so we kept the world but forced everyone to make peace with the Dark Yor.

The worlds which the Yor had surrendered to us were coming along nicely. Some could out produce all but the best planets in Freebee proper. The Torians were growing increasingly interested in the Freebee way of life. We gifted them a number of warships, including several battleship killers(which were no longer a part of the offensive military backbone, simply there for rotting out pirates and the like). Still despite our gifting of ships to the Torians, the Freebee navy now had 1900 ships.

Peace continued for a while, but not for long....

Wow... I only had one game that epic. Most of the time I never get that many ships in my navy.

thanks:) Sorry it lacks details of planet names as well. I wish I had a fancy for writing those things down.

Ultimately the Altarians and Iconians grew strong again, and fought two further wars with the Freebees. At the ballte of Iconia though, it was obvious to even the most enthusiastic supports of the war that Iconia was breathing its last, like an old man on a respirator, and that Altaria had finally admitted defeat, by how quickly they offered peace. In between the final wars, they attempted to regain control through influence, but the Freebees nabbed two planets from the Iconians.
The Freebees had intended on annihlating the Iconians, because throughout the primary conflict, they would ocasionally breach cease-fires to attack transports, resulting in the deaths of billions of freebee soldiers. But then they'd offer peace immediately, to my great relief, because at the time the Freebees didn't have enough of an industry yet to go after both Iconia and Altaria.

For player notes, I've noticed the Iconians and the Altarians are bound to ally. The combination of the two, if they can get to that point, is unstopable. The Iconians prefer a strategy of light fast fighters, and lots of them, to bigger hulls. While the Altarians will use larger hulls, escorted by light fighters, and then they seem to converge there transports on particular planets, in a kind of combined warfare that I didn't think the AI was capable of. Thats how they defeated the dark Yor, and how they initially tried to win against the Freebees(but luckily the battleship killers were faster than the troop transports). Eventually the Torian Federation joined the Freebee empire. I've noticed the Torians, while capable of becoming strong, they have a tendancy to be anti-social. Part of it may have been the fact that the Freebee republic encumpassed them, but in other games they become very powerful, or are the first to go. As a rule, unless I am a super power I don't ally with the Torians, simply to avoid wars I can't handle.

Certainly an epic and sounds like an ejoyable game.

Guessing it was on ahuge galaxy given the number of planets involved .

Noticing your comment regarding the Altarian and the Iconians, they ally a lot b/c they are both aligned to good. I suspect you noticed their strength b/c of the lack fo Korath and Dreginer involved in your game, they ususally deal with Iconian and Altarians very early on.

In my current game the Iconians and Altarians kicked off with the Dregnir early on, only for the Korath and the Yor to come in and beat them to a pulp (and there's me going good at the wrong damn time!).

when i write my epic tale you come and read it ok. might not be as good as yours but at least give it a try...

P.S. Have you joined a metaverse galactic race yet?
Nope, I haven't done any GalCiv2 metaverse. I've looked into it and I have to admit that the instructions aren’t very clear (or I’m a bit dense). I don’t understand generating a ‘character’ or joining a race. When I’ve poked around I haven’t seen anything that explains how it is supposed to work, so I wandered away.
