Request for 2 categories...

I left a post on Diafragma's last screenshot that he didn't really deserve. I did it because he has proven that he wants to help and that he doesn't carry around a big ego. It occured to me that I should say this more generally. Diafragma, forgive me for starting with you.

I AM TIRED OF EGO SCREENSHOT POSTS!

OK, that being said, here is my suggestion (needs a lot of work and input).

Two screenshot categories:

1. "I have something you don't and it is cool. Beg me for info." Usually these kinds of folks just go "dumb".

Nothing wrong with this approach. Just a waste of time for most of us. I am looking to learn AND I am looking for inspiration and tools to do so. This category would not be where I would hang out.

2. "This is the great 'seed(s)' I found (or made)for my screenshot" These type do this to elevate(sp?) the screen to something exciting, beautiful, different. "This is what I wanted to achieve". Here are my tools for doing so.

Just about ALL screenshots start with somebody else's work. Nothing wrong with that. Take something to new heights or agregate it with something else to bring out beauty even the originator hadn't seen. Give credit (and links...I have seen some give fake links or dead links just to cut down the chatter...tsk tsk). "Thanks to all the artists!" is NOT an excuse to forego due diligence! CONTRIBUTTION, ISPIRATION! HELP THE REST OF THE COMMUNITY! Share you road map and tools (components)!

Screenshots are the embodyment of the caste system in skinning. "I have more time, money, persistance, etc. than you do". "I found something to work with you didn't...eat you heart out!"

Stop it "people" or stop it Stardock/Wincustomize, please.

OK, let 'em fly!

About the only thing I can agree with is for the people to give credit for the pieces you use. The rest or damn near all the rest is a load of crap.

Huh? ...what'd he say??

give credit for the pieces you use.

yup ...what WOM said.

I have to agree. If someone has something no one else can get, why not show it off. I'm sure there are some skinners out there who make skins that they keep just for themselves. Punishing those who want to show these off is not the route to take. I see where your coming from, it's just not rational to do what you say because you can't stand to not have those skins.

I do agree that links (if available) should be given.

Working on your subtlety again WOM?

yup ...what WOM said.

I also appreciate where the author's coming from, but maybe the presentation could have been tweaked and edited a bit b4 final post. As it is, a simple observation/request comes across pretty antagonistic. I wasn't aware of anything resembling "ego screenshot posts", myself. It's always been "share what y'got" so others can get ideas. Peace out. It's Christmas.

OK, well. WOM, could you be a little more specific about the crap part other than the "load of crap" generalization. I am most interested in how having 2 categories "punishes" one category or the other. Or is it just "I'm not on top" is punishment?

I am just offering an opinion and looking for feedback that educates me or changes things....WOM, "we need a verb Senator!".

Back in the 'good old days' of skinz.org, the screenshot section [there] was a way for skinners to display their 'WIP's [work in progress].  It [sreenshot section] was a tool...specifically for assistance/feedback in a skinner's creation process.

Since then, with the popularity of skinning [beyond just the realm of the skinnERS] has led to a shift in focus for screenshots, as they now tend more to be by users finding new and interesting combinations of others' work [skins].

Any time this becomes a situation of "look at me...I have something no-one else has...because I'm 'in' with the in-crowd" - simply reflects poorly on the person uploading the screenshot...both his community attitude AND his personal character.  [much of that appears to spawn from cliquish sites].

If there were to be any distinction between screenshots...via 2 categories then they would be definitely split between 'functional/tool/example/WIP' [the original ss reason] and 'creative expression' [the new direction[?]].

If an SS upload is essentially the latter it really is preferable that detail/credit/links/whatever is given.

If it's the former that doesn't apply by definition....

Thanks, Skinhit. That extra detail clears it all up for me.

Jafo, I think we're pushin' on a string here.

No offense meant folks. Looks like we have the same split here as we do in the Screenshot section. Lets drop this (I retract) and stay friends.
