Why do YOU do it.....?

Why do YOU do it.....?

Skin, that is.

The other day I was leafing through old 'bytes' in a dusty corner of a forgotten harddrive, and came across some ancient skins I did for a forgotten proggy or two...

Got me thinking....

What got me into this?...that's easy...was shells - messing with the GUI the 'brutal' way....but that's not what has me here still....around 10 years later.

So that reminded me of a 'feeling' I had at that old skinz.org site..... when I realised that skinning was nothing more than a new artform, like painting, or sculpting, except for one small detail.....People doing 'it' in the mid/late '90s were at the DAWN of the emergence of this new 'artform', and THAT was something no painter or sculptor could lay claim to....[at least none still living].

It meant that even as an 'observer' what was being done was genuinely fresh, new and exciting....and if you also happened to 'dabble in it' yourself then the fun was even more acute.

So....a decade later...the world has changed, skinning is far better-known now than it was then, and a lot of 'new' faces have been attracted to it all.  [skinz.org membership probably just made it into 4 figures...Wincustomize is in 7]

Question is.....WHY...?

Casual time-killer or outlet for expression?

The 'sad' part is knowing the people who have moved on, departed the scene...over the years.  People you think of...often....of whom many now are oblivious.  The 'happy' part is those who come after...to swell the ranks, even though skinning is now more complex [harder]...and maybe quite less divergent [fewer skinnable apps].

[I digress]

So....

Why are you here?

I'm here for the Community. People from all over the world. Some artists, some computer whizzes, some just plain helpful, others entertaining, but all bringing something to the table.

I've belonged to a lot of communities since I first logged on to a bulletin board back in '87 or '88 and this is by far the best.

I love being able to make my apps looks different, and even though I'm NOT a skinner, I very much appreciate those who are!!
They are mega talented and I love seeing new skins, and trying them on for size!
And as much as most people fight change, {I think people actually like to change things more than they will admit!}
I welcome change, if only on a small scale, the effects are wonderful, I love changing the skin on my PC, makes me more able to tolerate it, when it locks up or does something else equally irritating! *wink*
Thanks skinners!

Its funny Starkers , but I have found the people I like/respect more are the ones I had fights/debates with.

I generally try to show respect to all, including those I may disagree with, and the great thing here at WC, there's so many folk deserving of my respect and admiration, not just those with skinning abilities, but a multitude of fantastic members with helpful, caring, humorous and top-class personalities....they all combine to help create a close-knit community I'm most proud to be a part/member of.

Oh, and there's another reason I'm here constantly...daily...errr...always/forever! Apparently there's no preventitive medicine to combat the compelling urge to frequently log in to WC on a daily basis. When it became an issue with otherwise having/getting a life, I went to my shrink to see if there was a medication for WC addiction: which he told me there wasn't. He did say, however, that he had a friend working at a pharmacueticals firm who could probably come up with one over time .... but bah, now I'm hoping he fails cos I don't wanna stop and I'm scared somebody'll spike me tea with it to direct my attentions elsewhere.

It took me a while to realize that not everyone that was on the forums was a skinner. I knew my place in the computer world was that of a 'User' and sometimes user's are not even allowed to be seen let alone heard. I've left more comments in the last week then I have in the two plus years that I've been a subscriber. Why am I here, you can't help but learn from going through the forums. Every morning after checking for those important computer updates the next place I sign on to is here to look at what's new in the forums. If you can't learn something new going through here you will aleast find comments left that usually will bring a smile to your face. For me that's what life is all about.

If it wasn't for my ex girl friend

I wouldn't have got a computer.

I tried her computer and liked it.

She said she wanted a website

so I made mine to figure out how to do it.

Then she changed her mind.

It is all an accident.

All I know is that I want to create, and wincustomize is the best place to develop my potential as a designer , to test the limit of my ability , to learn from the best of the best , to encounter mistakes and learn from them , to be doing what i like doing most , to know people from different places , to feel being encouraged , to experience being liked , to prove I may be worth something ,  to inspire others ,  and to let people know I exist .

Maybe God has bigger reason why I am here...but for now...I want to click that Post Comment button

Don't want one of those.....they ain't never gonna let me log in mornings with one of them on board/active. Builds up overnight, ya see, and each morning I've an hour or three of constant n' repetitive trouser coughs afore me colon's comfy...

Another reason I'm here.....accidentally stumbled in and now I can't find the exit. Makes ya wonder, don't it....whether they pile up the best skins/most insteresting threads in front of all the doors on purpose, so's you can't find yer way out....

Thought I'd fooled 'em once....found one of those revolving doors, but after a dozen or so rapid rotations I found meself back in the Bootskin Gallery....

Oh well, I can think of worse places to be trapped...like the time this crazy nympho woman removed all the door knobs and painted the exits same colour as the walls to imprison me as her sex slave....
